For one portion of broccoli as part of a meal.
We are going to our towns well to do Chinese Restaurant tomorrow and thought I'd browse the menu online.Mains are around £13-£22,starters £8-£11.Aibu (or tight) to think vegetables as part of a meal shouldn't be so expensive? We are in the North if it's relevant.

Lighthearted.

I guess the cost is a bit out of step with the other items on the menu

BrownEyedGirl80 · 21/05/2021 22:12

@Flowerclock it's a sit down restaurant not a take out.Yes its plain.

If it comes with a side of steak then no. On its little ownsome? What are they boiling it in? Angel tears?

I paid 70p for a wee head of broccoli today. I do like my veg. £7.20 worth of greens would probably do me a good few days.

That is some mark up.

Don’t order a pickled egg. They’ll probably claim it is from a dodo and charge you 400 quid. Wink

Blondiney · 21/05/2021 22:14

Fucking broccoli, that worthy bastard has got ideas above his station.

Hallyup6 · 21/05/2021 22:16

I'd feel ripped off paying £13 for a meal and I'd expect the sodding broccoli to come with it.

Serpenta · 21/05/2021 22:16

I could possibly be won round if as @Flowerclock suggested it might be a fancy and delicious broccoli side, but you say it's just plain old broccoli for 7 pounds and 20 actual pence (the 20p seems to flaunt how outrageous they're being) and I'm laughing at their cheek Grin

FangsForTheMemory · 21/05/2021 22:17

@flowerclock Going there is the whole point. It's all silent-footed waiters and red velvet.

LadyCatStark · 21/05/2021 22:20

Jesus Christ all of those prices are expensive for a Chinese restaurant!

OopsUp · 21/05/2021 22:21

Buy 80p broccoli and stream. Take to resturant and sneakily put it on your plate.

OopsUp · 21/05/2021 22:21

Steam, obviously.

Lizardcentral · 21/05/2021 22:23

I could buy a set menu del dia Chinese meal with a glass of wine in a quality establishment for less than your portion of broccoli !!!

ILoveShula · 21/05/2021 22:28

You can get a big bag of chips for a less than half that.

speakout · 21/05/2021 22:28

Rules is not the oldest restarant in the UK- in London perhaps but there are several much older.
Blackfriars in Newcastle is 500 years older than Rules for instance.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 21/05/2021 22:29

I'd cancel the reservation. Fuck that.

RJnomore1 · 21/05/2021 22:31

This is like those places that do a cauli steak for the veggies and charge the same as an actual steak!

FurrySlipperBoots · 21/05/2021 22:31

I remember being shocked years ago to see 'Heinz cream of tomato soup' as a starter option at a fancy restaurant, for £7! I don't know which is worse, that they thought they could get away with charging so much, or that they thought Heinz counted as 'upmarket'.

sansucre · 21/05/2021 22:33

£7.20 that's nothing!

Last December, I was taken to Imperial Treasures where a portion of broccoli is £20! Thankfully I was not paying the bill!

AMillionMilesAway · 21/05/2021 22:36

Fuck me, broccoli is £1 for a whole one in Asda!
Extortion.
I don't care how wankishly prepared or served it is.

I was going to say that sounds amazing but then I looked at the menu and live seafood just is really off-putting to me. I wouldn't want to think it was happily swimming around minutes ago
JetBlackSteed · 21/05/2021 22:46

Oh you so need to link to the menu.
That is seriously expensive for a side of broccoli.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/05/2021 22:46

People really need to stop comparing it to pruce of supermarket broccoli 😂

'Can we have one portion of broccoli to share, a jug of tap water. And any leftovers from other people's plates that don't look too chewed' - me in a restaurant where a vegetable side costs £20
