For one portion of broccoli as part of a meal.
We are going to our towns well to do Chinese Restaurant tomorrow and thought I'd browse the menu online.Mains are around £13-£22,starters £8-£11.Aibu (or tight) to think vegetables as part of a meal shouldn't be so expensive? We are in the North if it's relevant.

Lighthearted.

People need to stop going on about supermarket prices..... Really😂

Dontwanttolivewithmylover · 23/05/2021 18:06

RIP OFF. Good grief! I wouldn't pay that and I live in an exclusive part of Surrey.

tommyhoundmum · 23/05/2021 18:17

Tenderstem broccoli is more expensive than the usual sort, of course. But £7+ is ridiculous.

RoSEbuds6 · 23/05/2021 18:50
Outrageous. This is a link to the menu at Rules, the oldest restaurant in the UK and wonderfully posh. £4.95 for a side dish of veg. rules.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/MAY-MENU-2021-front.pdf
I'm torn by your post!
Drooling at the the thought of steak and kidney pudding, and horrified by the thought of paying so much for it.
I'm sure it will be high quality, but Covid has meant I am out of practice for paying restaurant prices.

supermoonrising · 23/05/2021 18:57

£7 for broccoli is stupid but then again so is £13 for a big bowl of noodles with a bit of chicken. If you start costing up ingredients then it always looks bad in countries like the UK. What, 50p for the broccoli vs £1.00 for the noodles. The cost is for staff and rent.

Tartyflette · 23/05/2021 18:59

We used to go to a dim sum restaurant in Chinatown (London, Chuen Cheng Ku) which had the trolleys with the steamed dumplings etc that came around to your table where the dishes were finished off by the servers.
The broccoli was not like European broccoli , it was bright green, very long stemmed and tender but strong tasting, it was steamed then finished with sesame oil and oyster sauce. There was plenty for three people in a serving.
It was delicious but unfortunately I can't remember how much it cost!
(If I even knew in the first place. It was the kind of place where the bill was in Chinese characters -- but it was never more than £20 a head in total)
But in a Chinese restaurant it seems unlikely that broccoli would be served plain and unadorned.

NoProblem123 · 23/05/2021 19:07

It depends I think !

Would you buy a drink for £7.20 ?

The broccoli might be the best think you’ve ever tasted, especially in a Chinese.
Pretty sure my last crispy seaweed was about £6 and I’m still thinking about it 😁
Rules is not the oldest restarant in the UK- in London perhaps but there are several much older.
Blackfriars in Newcastle is 500 years older than Rules for instance.

That was very interesting @speakout - thanks!

@BrownEyedGirl80 hope you enjoy whatever you do have - I really fancy broccoli in oyster sauce now.

To be fair though, Blackfriars was the dining hall of a Dominican friary, not a restaurant, although the friary was a sort of hotel of the 13th and 14th centuries for visitors to Newcastle.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 23/05/2021 19:16

What Chinese restaurant offers broccoli as a side dish? Choose a real chinese !

CoffeeRunner · 23/05/2021 19:25

Broccoli for £7.20 & no chips!

Doesn't sound like my kind of establishment at all.

Sixsillysausagessizzlinginapan · 23/05/2021 19:29

They mustn't like cooking it

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 23/05/2021 19:32

They want to put off guest that think that broccili is an appropriate side dish for a chinese meal. "Customer Selection"!

RRK593 · 23/05/2021 20:05

Depends where in the North you are? I'm in Cheshire and would consider that a bit more expensive but not unreasonable.

angela99999 · 23/05/2021 20:42

We live in London and I'd be horrified to be asked pay that for broccoli. I also think that you should get a complete dish for the given price, even top end places usually include everything - though if you wanted extra you'd obviously be charged.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 23/05/2021 20:43

Honestly, I don't think it's just side. Hard to say without a pic, but of rest of the menu is normally priced, it eould be odd to have this 1 weird thing.

PickleCabbage · 23/05/2021 21:24

@tartyflette I think it must be that! It's sometimes called Chinese brocolli/kai lan - even at grocery shops it's really expensive, I hardly buy it myself. It's often served on a large plate, so not the size of a side dish, usually more than enough to serve 2- 3.

But if it is just normal broccoli steamed and just a few measly florets - then definitely a rip off!Shock

BringMeTheTea · 23/05/2021 21:28

Ay?! I'd leave the veg and the fact they don't sell chips, no way!

In fact I wouldn't pay those prices at all!
We have two all you can eat Chinese restaurants that are £20-£30. SE.

bemusedmoose · 23/05/2021 21:44

Bloody hell is it gold plated!? Even here near London that would buy you more broccoli than a family could manage.

Harmonypuss · 23/05/2021 22:04

Glad I'm allergic to most veggies, I certainly wouldn't even consider going somewhere that charges that for a portion of veg,I dread to think how much a pud would be 🥺

Tiffanny · 24/05/2021 07:42

Eating out is suddenly very expensive. Prices up everywhere

My local (rough and ready) pub which serves Thai food, is offering a Pad Thai for £15

They have had a lot of criticism for this on social media

SchrodingersImmigrant · 24/05/2021 08:51

Prices will be up because of extra costs and less seating. Some places will take a piss, they did last summer too, but most places are just trying to survive with lower capacity

wingsanddreams · 24/05/2021 09:05

It's a standard price for a main vegetable dish in Chinese restaurants. When it's served as a main dish, it's stir fried with other ingredients, and come in large size, not a side dish size. I've never seen broccolis served as a main dish in Chinese restaurants. It's definitely a translation error and should be a type of imported oriental vegetable.

Bertiebiscuit · 24/05/2021 09:10

No way - total rip off - give them a very Frank write up on line - and let them know you're going to do this

Dizzywizz · 24/05/2021 11:56

How was your meal @BrownEyedGirl80?
