For one portion of broccoli as part of a meal.
We are going to our towns well to do Chinese Restaurant tomorrow and thought I'd browse the menu online.Mains are around £13-£22,starters £8-£11.Aibu (or tight) to think vegetables as part of a meal shouldn't be so expensive? We are in the North if it's relevant.

Lighthearted.

That's not JUST broccoli though is it. The 1 for 20😂

MindatWork · 21/05/2021 22:50

That’s a pretty standard price for a broccoli dish in Chinatown op - I’m not sure why but it seems the same across the board, it’s usually stir fired in oyster sauce with garlic etc and is a big plateful rather than a few bits.

It is expensive but the comparisons with the price of a head of broccoli in tesco are complete pointless. Everything is cheaper in the supermarket...

MindatWork · 21/05/2021 22:53

Case in point, this is a section of the menu from my fave place in Chinatown...

Is £7.20 expensive
Ostryga · 21/05/2021 22:54

My local authentic Chinese serves broccoli with salted egg yolk and shell on prawns for £3.95

PLAIN broccoli for £7. It must be a typo or lockdown has gone to their head.

Quaggars · 21/05/2021 22:55

I think I need more information before commenting fully lol.
Yes, 7.20 for a portion of broccoli sounds absolutely ridiculous on the face of things.
Does it come with any fancy saucethough?
Anyways, I'm not sure who I'm trying to kid, I'd no doubt shout "Ow much?!" and promptly faint lol

sansucre · 21/05/2021 22:57

@HmmmmmmInteresting

We didn't order (or eat) live seafood, it's not my thing and my date was sensitive to this. We had the Peking duck and it was fabulous, as it should be given its price tag. The best bit was that there were enough leftovers to last me for several days!

Friendofdennis · 21/05/2021 23:04

This is going off topic a bit but it’s still broccoli related. A friend once worked in a private care home as the head chef. The owners were notoriously tight fisted when it came to providing ingredients for residents meals. She was given a tiny piece of cheddar and one head of broccoli to make a vegetable bake for 30 people. I think she had to bulk it out with pasta.

Cryalot2 · 21/05/2021 23:05

I think its a rip off.
But depends on how much you like broccoli. You are also paying for the whole experience including service. I guess some things have to be marked up..

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 21/05/2021 23:05

Shit in hell. You could buy about 10 whole broccolis for that.

Daylight robbery OP 🙈🤣

Reminds me of the time we went to a (pretty cheap) Mexican in Glasgow.
Waitress: “Let me know if I can grab you more of anything”
Friend: “Would it be possible to get a wee drop more grated cheese?”
Waitress brings a side plate with a sprinkle of cheese on it. Honestly, not even enough to make a scabby cheese sandwich with 🙈 bill comes - £6.50 charge for extra cheese 🤣🤣

@AMillionMilesAway

Fuck me, broccoli is £1 for a whole one in Asda! Extortion. I don't care how wankishly prepared or served it is.
A pound for a head of broccoli? What's gone wrong with ASDA? They used to be the Cheap Shop. I expect to pay 40-50p for a whole broccoli.
ArabellaScott · 21/05/2021 23:12

@KindergartenKop

Just get chips
Glasgow salad.
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/05/2021 23:17

schrodinger

I started that Grin

Sorry but I couldn’t help but compare. I wouldn’t mind If it was served in fancy sauce or some exotic blend of herbs or spice.

For a slack handful of plain broccoli it is a bit of a farkin liberty.

I gave the dog about 5 florets today. I’m wondering if I’ve become wantonly extravagant Grin

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/05/2021 23:17

Glasgow salad 🤣

Shadedog · 21/05/2021 23:24

Broccoli is a pita. Hard to keep warm without going overdone. Takes up space on burner etc, they make it expensive to put you off. Not worth hassle if you only make 50p out of it.

What's happening?!Confused

Mustreadabook · 21/05/2021 23:27

I don't think you usually have a separate vegetable with a main at a chinese meal? They usually have vegetables in them. The brocoli dish is an alternative main.

@SchrodingersImmigrant that's what I thought Confused

SchrodingersImmigrant · 21/05/2021 23:31

@HmmmmmmInteresting me now looking through thread for derail and discussing it which causes derail🙈

gymnasticrobotics · 21/05/2021 23:32

Generally Chinese people won't order broccoli at a Chinese restaurant because as we can all agree, it's not value for money.

Chinese meals are made up of dishes meant to be shared. So maybe a combination of meat, fish, veg dishes and steamed rice for the table. We generally ordered Chinese vegetables like pak choi, kai lan or pea shoot, which cost maybe £2 - 5 per portion to buy from Chinese supermarket anyway. The broccoli was really on the menu for people who are more comfortable with western vegetables. Hence the weird pricing.

PickleCabbage · 22/05/2021 00:18

Could it be chinese broccoli or kai lan? That tends to be more expensive. It's usually about £4 per bag (less than 500g) at my local shop so not cheap anyway.

BorderlineHappy · 22/05/2021 02:56

hat's not JUST broccoli though is it

No its M&S broccoli 😂😂
