For one portion of broccoli as part of a meal.
We are going to our towns well to do Chinese Restaurant tomorrow and thought I'd browse the menu online.Mains are around £13-£22,starters £8-£11.Aibu (or tight) to think vegetables as part of a meal shouldn't be so expensive? We are in the North if it's relevant.

Lighthearted.

@BradleyCooperwillbemine are you in s Yorkshire?

OP posts:
BrownEyedGirl80 · 22/05/2021 08:52

@Mustreadabook it is a side dish. Not all the mains have green veg in them. E.g sizzling King garlic prawns have onions and peppers only

Not Yorkshire, no.

@Kissthepastrychef

And by "someone" what I mean is a cook, the pot washer, the waiting staff, the restaurant manager, the cleaner - all those people involved in the running of a restaurant. If it was a French restaurant I don't think so many people would be outraged. But people seem to expect Chinese to be dirt cheap 🤷‍♀️
I think people just expect broccoli to be dirt cheap.
ZenNudist · 22/05/2021 08:55

Yes. I thought you were going to say its for a massive plate family style. 4 pieces Shock

It's a bit like charging £16 for "cauliflower steak", which is worse!

MrsClatterbuck · 22/05/2021 09:07

This reminds me of a visit to restaurant in a shopping village where we ordered the minestrone. The server mentioned something about did we want pasta and we said yes. I was thinking that's a bit strange not obviously reading the men properly. Soup came and was delicious but when paying the bill noticed afterwards ae had been charged €2.50 for the pasta each so 5 euro in total. Ok maybe it's to do with gluten free option but 5 euro for a fee bits of pasta. That would have bought quite a big bag I the supermarket and I know someone up thread said not to look at it that way but they would have been buying it off the wholesaler so paying even less. They must have been importing it from Italy direct.

Doesn't matter how much they buy it for, that expense is usually low. Why people shouldn't compare it is because you have staff wages, taxes, vat, rent, business rates, insurance, gas, electricity, water, accountants, repairs and upkeep of premises and/or equipment, cost of equipment, hella lot of miscellaneous bits, wastage, uniforms, and so on...

MrsClatterbuck · 22/05/2021 09:15

I love broccoli and one Chinese restaurant we used to go to included broccoli in some of its dishes much to DH dismay. But much as I love it would not pay £7.20 even if it was the tenderstem which I prefer and does cost more. They will be buying their veg from a vegetable wholesaler and paying less than you buying from the greengrocers.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/05/2021 09:19

Also, it's not AS cheap as some people might think, buying from wholesale...

ceilingsand · 22/05/2021 09:42

It's a ridiculous price and most people wouldn't pay it, however you do or don't compare it.

AMillionMilesAway · 22/05/2021 09:42

I think the hospitality sector has a lot of bills to pay right now and have hiked their prices to help cover costs. I know not everyone can afford to pay those prices but if we want to keep these things afloat for the future then maybe we need to accept short term price hikes?

It wouldn't be short term if they knew people would pay it though. So it depends; can they make more money with losing a % of customers who won't pay those prices?

ceilingsand · 22/05/2021 09:54

But surely the hospitality sector will sink quicker with unreasonable prices? We've all been through the pandemic!

It will sink even quicker if they keep the same prices but have less tables...
Member589500 · 22/05/2021 10:27

I just checked local Chinese restaurant and stir fried Chinese broccoli with ginger and garlic is £10. Wow!

TheGoogleMum · 22/05/2021 10:29

I think a lot of restaurants have put their prices up. Probably trying to recoup pandemic losses a bit

PickleCabbage · 22/05/2021 10:32

@kissthepastrychef yeah I think people generally expect Chinese food to be cheap probably comparing it to a takeaway. Good Chinese food can be expensive!

Also to some posters, the portion usually can serve a 2 - 3 people, it's often served on a larger serving plate

PerveenMistry · 22/05/2021 10:43

I love Rules

NisekoWhistler · 22/05/2021 21:20

I've eaten in some of the most expensive restaurants in the world and live in London, that is extortionate!

FreddieMercurysCat · 23/05/2021 17:43

£7.20 for fucking broccoli? Holy shitballs! Especially when you can get a whole one from Morrison’s for 45p

Toomuchtrouble4me · 23/05/2021 17:45

I went to The Ivy in a very expensive area of central London on Thursday and the purple sprouting broccoli with lemon and sea salt was enough for two and perfectly cooked. £4.25.
£7 from the local Chinese is a joke.

jane1956 · 23/05/2021 17:48

can I just have the desserts? they sound better than broccoli

Coldwine75 · 23/05/2021 17:49

YES!

Unicorn1976 · 23/05/2021 17:53

That's ridiculous- especially when you can buy a whole thing of broccoli for under 50p in the supermarket.

InFiveMins · 23/05/2021 17:55

It's extortionate and I wouldn't eat there unless it was a very, very nice restaurant. £7.20 for plain broccoli is taking the piss. Up to £4 would be fine, anything over that for plain veg is ridiculous.

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 23/05/2021 17:57

Utterly ridiculous!
