Do your 12 year olds boys bedrooms, smell?

And if so, what of?

Mine is going through puberty - his voice has broken and he is going through a growth spurt. His bedroom smells every morning and I air it. It then smells again later in the afternoon when he’s back in it after school.

He doesn’t seem to smell though. I don’t know if it’s a bit of a sweet smell but it’s not a pleasant smell so not sure it is sweet. I really can’t describe it.

I can only describe ds room smell as sweaty kebab with a hint of farmyard .

Started at 13 and just stopped stinking by 17.

He also kicked up a bit if he didn't have showers am and pm but his room was the worst. This is despite changing bedding weekly , windows open every morning and airing the bed

LadyCatStark · 18/05/2021 20:26

Not yet, I guess I have this to come. He has an en-suite bathroom too so that might be even worse! The smell of Lynx Africa does protrude down the stairs though 🙈.

BipolarSunset · 18/05/2021 20:29

Oh no, as a mum to an 8 year old DS. I'm dreading this! Confused

Twistered · 18/05/2021 20:30

Stinky rooms yet very clean teenage boys is a mystery I've not got to the bottom of

Drunkenmonkey · 18/05/2021 20:33

This is eye opening and I'm very confused and worried
Does anyone NOT have smelly teenage boy bedrooms?! If so what is your secret?

notacooldad · 18/05/2021 20:34

I could cope with the bedroom. That wasn't to bad.
It was the sweaty armpits that stunk no matter how much deodorant he put on.
We couldn't win. Ds2 was the stinkier one and after a shower in the morning he would wander around from the bathroom th the bedroom spraying a spray deodorant that gave us coughing fits!! At first we tolerated it because we didn't want to be in his case all the time but it made no difference. The body odour clung to his school shirts and jumpers and normal washing wouldn't get rid of the smell.
I think I used combinations of vinegar and bicarb.
Then all of a sudden the smell goes as quickly as it arrived and you have a normal smelling human once again!

Joeblack066 · 18/05/2021 20:34

Yep, it’s boy smell. Febreze is your friend.
They’re smelly while their hormones are going crazy!

BeaLola · 18/05/2021 20:36

My DS13 room so far is ok - however he sprays lynx copiously , changes his clothes several times a day and leaves the barely worn ones dropped on the bathroom floor/ his bedroom floor all the time

He went through 4 changes of clothes on Sat:

  • pjs to lounge in whilst eating. Real fast /chilling
  • casual wear for going out
  • different casual for when he actually went out to the park for 2 hrs
  • different pjs to lounge in until went to bed !
Pyewackect · 18/05/2021 20:38

14 yr old son. No, apart from sport deodorant and deep heat spray.

HappyAsASandboy · 18/05/2021 20:39

Yup, a vaguely hamster-cage or biscuity smell here. Started when he was about 8. He doesn't smell, and there's nothing in his room to smell. It's just how it smells in there Confused

3AndStopping · 18/05/2021 20:39

This thread has made me really grateful to have 3 daughters 😂

kitkatsky · 18/05/2021 20:40

Two words- wank socks. Can't believe nobody has said this yet

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 18/05/2021 20:42

Oh absolutely! I never lived with my brother, but I've been with my DH since he was 17, when I started visiting his house you could smell the boy smell coming from the room his 2 younger brothers shared when you walked by the door. DH had a smell too but weirdly I found it soothing rather than gross.

One of his brothers lived with us for 3 and a half years (he FINALLY moved out 18 months ago!) and his bedroom stunk Envy even though he was mid-twenties.

ZeusandClio · 18/05/2021 20:42

Of course a teenage boy's room smells of teenage boy. It's a pretty special smell but totally normal.

countdowntobaby2020 · 18/05/2021 20:43

Mine is only a baby but this thread gives me horrific flashbacks to going on school residential at 9 weeks pregnant at the peak of the nausea, walking in to a dormitory of 11 year old boys in the morning to wake them and making a very fast exit!!!

CanOfLilt · 18/05/2021 20:43

Omg yes. A sort of sheepy smell. I find washing his pillow relatively often helps a bit.

Also...actual soap (as in, a bar of) works better on stinky pits than shower gel.

FaceyRomford · 18/05/2021 20:46

From 13 to 15 my DM insisted on my (large) bedroom window always being open. I nearly died of pneumonia.

AlwaysLatte · 18/05/2021 20:48

Sounds familiar! My DS13 has this smell in his room if he's been in there for any length of time. And he showers every day, including washing his hair, brushes his teeth etc etc. No food in the bedroom. Fresh clean bedding on once a week. Carpets vacuumed at least once a week and bin emptied every day. He himself doesn't smell of it, it's really odd! The hamster thing is pretty accurate.

Yubaba · 18/05/2021 20:49

I have a 12 year old and he’s just started with the funky smell Hmm it’s not too bad at the moment but DH can smell it worse than I can for some reason, and I have the nose of a bloodhound.
I also have a 10 year old and he’s terrible for tidying his room so I can imagine he’ll stink too

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/05/2021 20:49

Uncastrated billy goats up for mating also smell a lot. Just sayin’ Wink... So I think it’s the testosterone surge.

After reading this thread, I’m positively sighing relief at the overwhelming stench in dd’s room of cheap body sprays. She also has roll on deodorant. She says she’s now using it (ongoing issues) and I think she is because until recently she smelt of a combo of random Victoria secrets spray and fresh BO after a few hours and now the BO smell has gone.

babbaloushka · 18/05/2021 20:55

It's real, unfortunately, one day it will go just as quick as it came!

Arrierttyclock · 18/05/2021 21:00

I can smell my brothers bedroom now even tho I haven't lived at home for years. Boys bedrooms are gross

Minezatea · 18/05/2021 21:07

Yes my son smells of boy. Any room my OH has been in for a while smells of boy. Niece's rooms do not smell of boy. Everyone washes, so that's not the issue.

Sweettea1 · 18/05/2021 21:09

How can a room stink for no reason the smell comes from somewhere. My ds13 room stinks but it's normally because he hasn't washed probably smell goes after I've forced him to shower and opened window for 10mins.

Serin · 18/05/2021 21:22

They smell of goats, its put me right off feta.
I can confirm that dropping and smashing his full bottle of Gio aftershave helps Blush but its a drastic and expensive measure.
