Do your 12 year olds boys bedrooms, smell?

And if so, what of?

Mine is going through puberty - his voice has broken and he is going through a growth spurt. His bedroom smells every morning and I air it. It then smells again later in the afternoon when he’s back in it after school.

He doesn’t seem to smell though. I don’t know if it’s a bit of a sweet smell but it’s not a pleasant smell so not sure it is sweet. I really can’t describe it.

@MrsS92

We bought our house in October and I still can’t get the smell of their teenage boy out of one of the bedrooms ! Despite airing it everyday, it’s been scrubbed top to bottom multiple times and completely repainted 😂 I’ve resorted to sticking a load of plug in air fresheners in there which I don’t like, but what else can I do.
Does it have carpet? If so, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda all over the carpet, leave it for a day before vacuuming it up. Usually gets rid of all stale smells!
IncorrigibleTitmouse · 18/05/2021 19:31

Yes. A cross between wet dog and that sweetish smell of rotting fruit/flowers. My brother’s room did too while we were growing up. Neither my son nor my brother are stinkers in terms of washing or clean clothes, it’s seems to just be an adolescent boy smell.

IWishIWasABaller · 18/05/2021 19:31

My 14 yr old sons room never smells bad , his teen sister's rooms on the other hand Shock

Iloveitall · 18/05/2021 19:32

I’m glad it’s normal! I noticed it in the car the other day too. I left him in there while I went into a shop for 10-15 mins and got back in and it stunk. Think some of that was his breath though as he also doesn’t drink enough during the day. Hamster cage - I think it may smell a bit like that. Will have another sniff again later. 🤣. It’s just a kind of sweet but not quite, unpleasant smell. If it’s normal I can live with it - I think!

Oh gosh this fills me with dread. I have an 11 year old who would never shower given half the chance! Of course I insist he does shower, but I'm not looking forward to the stinky room phase.

shetlandponies · 18/05/2021 19:33

Yep 😩

Mines 15 now and still stinks. I open the window every day when he leaves for school and it stays open til he gets home / decides to shut it. That does help. He is very clean showers every day and likes body sprays and aftershave etc. His room is clean too, and I make all my kids wash their bed linen once a week. I think it's just hormones or something

Sweet smell of rotting fruit / flowers - that’s kind of similar too! There’s just nothing that describes it fully.

Doesn't help with your exact question, but I lived with a guy at uni, and omg! We always knew when he was up as the smell just emanated from his room! Don't know what the hell it was, he just must have exuded some sort of rank odour over night!
He didn't smell, was always well turned out, but flipping heck, the morning stench that escaped every morning was something else!

Branleuse · 18/05/2021 19:34

Teenagers stink, especially boys

TheresAnEyeInMeSoup · 18/05/2021 19:35

Twenty yr olds room has finally stopped smelling but 13 yr old has just started!

megletthesecond · 18/05/2021 19:37

No. And it makes me think there's something wrong with him.
He showers every evening, has clean pj's every day and an open trickle vent on the window. He's 14 and growing tall but not pongy.

Wrong with yours? Or mine?

DSS' bedroom really smells. He's 17 and comes and goes as he likes between us and his mum, and I know when he's home because I can smell his room as I walk up the stairs. It's not nice. It's not him though, he showers twice a day!

Ffs2020 · 18/05/2021 19:38

There are no words for it. Its completely indescribable. It just appears one day of its own accord, and I'm told it will disappear one day of its own accord, as well, with the half a can of lynx years in between.

A male friend described it as sweat, feet, jizz and desperation. Then it becomes sweat, feet, jizz, desperation under a perfume of lynx.

TheresAnEyeInMeSoup · 18/05/2021 19:39

I have two I'm dreading the teenage years. I'm gonna keep the dettol to hand when it happens Grin

Boys bedrooms are grim places.

Marmite27 · 18/05/2021 19:39

@GroggyLegs

As the mother of 2 little boys, this thread is distressing.

Where are the people saying 'No this is very unusual?'

There won’t be any because it’s very common Grin

I have 3 brothers Envy

OhWhyNot · 18/05/2021 19:40

Yes

His hair really smells after a few hours of washing

Aww I used to love how he smelt I would breath it all in not anymore 😆

CurlyMango · 18/05/2021 19:42

nd I thought it was just mine. I bicar and also fabreeze. He’s a clean lad and today but the stink......

LouLou789 · 18/05/2021 19:42

I’ve had two sons and both their rooms smelt like what I can only describe as “mouldy boy” One was a lot more keen on personal hygiene than the other and his wasn’t as bad...until his trainers were ejected from the hallway into room. Unholy!

megletthesecond · 18/05/2021 19:43

@Iloveitall mine Grin.
He's not weirdly clean or tidy. Just no smell in there.

HermioneWeasley · 18/05/2021 19:44

My son’s room smells of gerbils. We do not own gerbils.

A wise Mnetter said it’s Mother Nature’s way of helping us prepare for them flying the nest 😆

Bluetrews25 · 18/05/2021 19:45

Mine are past this stage now.
Go sniff his hair. I think that was it with mine, and the sweaty greasy hair pong soaks into the pillows, so they honk too.
Maybe they get hot and sweaty hair overnight, or something...
It does pass.
