Do your 12 year olds boys bedrooms, smell?

And if so, what of?

Mine is going through puberty - his voice has broken and he is going through a growth spurt. His bedroom smells every morning and I air it. It then smells again later in the afternoon when he’s back in it after school.

He doesn’t seem to smell though. I don’t know if it’s a bit of a sweet smell but it’s not a pleasant smell so not sure it is sweet. I really can’t describe it.

Teen boy hormones. Nasty smells. Just keep window open and air fresh in his room.

Pinkylemons · 19/05/2021 02:02

@CherryGlaze

Why do posters keep saying it's ejaculate? It's clearly not, this smell is everywhere that teenage boys are, it's testosterone and other hormones. It's grim but perfectly normal.

We're just there with DS, 12 - luckily he loves to shower and it's still quite easy to clear it from his room. But good tips about pillows and bedding, thanks, I'm sure I will need those

I gave him and 2 of his pals a lift to town last week. Just after we pulled away, I had to nip back into the house. By the time I got behind the wheel again, the car stank!

Exactly. My eldest son is severely disabled. It’s not ejaculate, of that I can be 100% sure.

@Iloveitall

My friend once described the distinctive smell of her teenage boys room as smelling like ”Livestock and Entitlement” Grin

Raindancer411 · 19/05/2021 07:25

I don't know why you all putting this to a teenage boy thing as an sure my husbands home office has the same smell 😂 I can smell it coming up the stairs and our bedroom. I have ordered him to open his office window when he is in there and I air our bedroom. My son is only 8 and I am dreading his adding to it. I grew up in a house of women and my dad was barely indoors so never had encountered then issue. Since noticing it with my hubby, I looked it up and it's to do with their testosterone and even if they don't smell, it happens. Anyone else's hubby's work from home (esp with the lockdown) and have you noticed it more?

whenwillthemadnessend · 19/05/2021 07:30

Well I notice it it too in dh room as I'm meno pausal so often sleep in spare room and I go in out room and it reeks

Yesterday I opened 13 yo sons window as his was a bit whiffy too

Just males I think Grin

HintofVintagePink · 19/05/2021 07:33

My DS is nearly 8 and I’ve started noticing this smell in the morning occasionally. I am sure it will get more frequent!
Opening the window for a few moments sorts it out. He showers and puts on fresh PJs every other day and bedding is changed weekly, so I don’t have any hygiene concerns. It really is just one of those things.

Raindancer411 · 19/05/2021 07:43

@whenwillthemadnessend Glad it's not just me then 😂

U2HasTheEdge · 19/05/2021 07:50
@Iloveitall The smell is caused by spunk. Your son, just like most other adolescent boys, is wanking. Which is normal and healthy.
No it really isn't.

It is nothing like it.

I have had three teen boys, all with smelly rooms. It's a hormonal smell. Nothing to do with masturbation and it is odd to put it down to that.

Asthenia · 19/05/2021 08:03

No teenage boys here but my partner is 28 and that overnight teen boy smell is only just going Grin whenever I sleep in the room by myself, it smells fine the next morning. More often than not when he’s been in there it smells overwhelmingly of boy. He’s such a clean person and he himself always smells lovely! It’s a weird hormonal thing I think.

@Bessica1970

Yes it’s a thing - as a secondary school teacher it’s now noticeable in the classroom ( year groups used to move around so the smell would move on with the class after an hour) now that the classes stay in the same room all day. It starts with year 8, worst is year 9 then it starts to improve in year 10. Year 11 are fine (but then you start to get whiffs of weed!) At least we get to keep the windows open 👍
Given a teacher wrote this - and the timeline is very close to DS - end of Y7 smell started and currently in Y9 it's gone pretty much -you do have to wonder what kind of behavior posters who insist it's wanking were getting up to themsleves in public.

I suspect for most it's hormones mixed with others common things - scalp/skin with hormone chnages are common sometime there's smells there, BO and other stuff.

I think you keep them clean and their room and bedding clean and if you air the room - or better yet get them to have windon open at night - it goes eventually.

TBH I'm bemused by people who have smell lingering for years though I suppose carpets and other soft furnishing could be retaining the smells and as PP said bicarbonate of soda rubbed in and hoovered up and febreze is probably best bet or getting rid of them all.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 19/05/2021 09:04

My younger brother’s bedroom always smelled like sweat. Never stale sweat, always fresh sweat but so overpowering. Horrible.

DS is 11 and occasionally his bedroom will smell like ‘boys’, that’s the only way I can describe it! I have his window open a lot.

drumandthebass · 19/05/2021 09:06

No, but my 16 year old DS's does!!

Hi all,
It's pretty clear that there are a lot of parents on here that don't have 12 year old boys - could we please knock the trollhunting on the head? If you don't believe a post is credible, do report it and we will have a look.

MrsJackSpratt · 19/05/2021 10:46

Like hamster. His room smells like hamsters!

Naimee87 · 19/05/2021 10:51

Yes, mine is 11 and very noticeable smell but we've come to an agreement for his 'pocket-money' he keeps it clean as in dirty clothes make it 'into' the washing basket and not 'next to it' Grin mopping floors regularly and airing/opening blinds helps massively. Duvet covers/sheets washed every week too. I've been to friends places where the smell is also there and they've super tidy/clean places other than the 'kids' room... helps i'm a bit of a tidier and that DS is still young enough to be able to 'reason with (bribe)' Wink

CounsellorTroi · 19/05/2021 11:15

John Bishop (father of several sons) talks about this in one of his comedy routines.

MidnightMeltdown · 19/05/2021 11:26

All men have a testosterone type smell I think. It's just a lot stronger when they're in their teens and early 20s. I used to share a small office with 3 guys in their early 20s and it always had the man stench when I went in. Women don't smell so we notice it more.

Nonbibblebibble · 19/05/2021 11:47

our 11 year olds room gets a bit 'fusty'! Regular opening of window, making sure that clean clothes are hung up and worn clothes in a basket and not left too long works. As does changing bedding frequently. Get a room diffuser with some nice oils? You can get cheapish plug in ones.
We know lots of teens who have them, just because you have boys doesn't mean you can't have nice 'smells' in the room...
