Do your 12 year olds boys bedrooms, smell?

And if so, what of?

Mine is going through puberty - his voice has broken and he is going through a growth spurt. His bedroom smells every morning and I air it. It then smells again later in the afternoon when he’s back in it after school.

He doesn’t seem to smell though. I don’t know if it’s a bit of a sweet smell but it’s not a pleasant smell so not sure it is sweet. I really can’t describe it.

When my son was a teenager his room always smelt and he didn’t often change the sheets. Then he got a girlfriend and all changed.

Mumof1andacat · 18/05/2021 21:41

Boy smell! Think it lingers forever. Dh is smelly! Well groomed and clean but when he comes in from work he needs to shower straight away! Doesn't particularly physical job either. Colleague had to share an office with 2 men for a while. She hated the smell.

Horst · 18/05/2021 21:47

My 12yo room stinks. Window open, air freshener, no carpets, new bed and mattress no wardrobe for stored stink. No dirty clothes including socks. The room just honks. Like a musty foggy stank.

Every morning I go in check the windows open, turn on the fan, lift the mattress etc he has a multitude of body sprays, deodorants and aftershaves on a shelf in his room for use. I do washing every damn day but his room honks. He doesn’t though.

I shall always remember the stench that greeted me on finding that six teenage boys had been in my living room all afternoon 😂

confuseddotcom090 · 18/05/2021 22:36

I remember my brother having it, and if you've ever toured a boys' boarding house, you'll be hit with a wall of stink

My lovely little boy will be smelly soon 😭

billy1966 · 18/05/2021 22:37

Only one of my son's rooms smell like that and the only thing is the windows must be open for a good 30 minutes a day.

Airing is crucial and changing the bedding very regularly.

The smaller the bedroom the worse it would be I would imagine.

ViciousJackdaw · 18/05/2021 22:39

@Iloveitall The smell is caused by spunk. Your son, just like most other adolescent boys, is wanking. Which is normal and healthy.

bellsbuss · 18/05/2021 22:39

I started noticing a smell in DS1 room who is 13 about 3 months ago, I open the window first thing and it's gone by the time I've got back from the school run. It's like a musty smell.

Jennyfromtheculdesac · 18/05/2021 22:40

Wondering whether to look into boarding schools after reading this. Make it someone else’s problem during term time at least.

Imagine what it’s like in the classroom with a herd of them together. The poor teachers!

My brothers room stank but my teenage boys rooms don’t smell.i don’t know if I’ve gone over the top to compensate but they change bedding and pjs regularly, no shoes or trainers in their room, windows opened regularly, room cleaned and hovered regularly.

YouKnowItsTrue · 18/05/2021 23:29

Maybe get a hamster, to mask the smell Grin

It's called testosterone and it stinks. Worse if the male is in a small space for long periods of time like a box room.

SkankingMopoke · 18/05/2021 23:43

Jennyfromtheculdesac I used to work at a boys' boarding school and my job regularly took me into the boarding houses. The bedrooms stank and some were utterly grim. If I had to do work in the bedrooms, the first job was always to prop the door open and get the windows as wide open as they'd go (they were all on restricters). The next job was to avoid touching anything until you had visually inspected whatever you were sorting out for bodily fluids.

Unfortunately my DH also stinks our room out with 'teenage boy' smell occasionally (he's nearing 50 so should be past this!). It seems to happen overnight, but a good airing of the room the following day makes it go. It's never allowed to become ingrained!

CherryGlaze · 19/05/2021 00:03

Why do posters keep saying it's ejaculate? It's clearly not, this smell is everywhere that teenage boys are, it's testosterone and other hormones. It's grim but perfectly normal.

We're just there with DS, 12 - luckily he loves to shower and it's still quite easy to clear it from his room. But good tips about pillows and bedding, thanks, I'm sure I will need those

I gave him and 2 of his pals a lift to town last week. Just after we pulled away, I had to nip back into the house. By the time I got behind the wheel again, the car stank!

TaraR2020 · 19/05/2021 00:11

Gosh, at uni I house shared with a male friend who's room smelled rank...you'd hold your breath to walk past. It was a thick, slightly sweet, rotting, musky smell. Far as I knew he didn't clean.

Once came back early and caught us having opened his windows while he was out to try and get some air in the air. He was not happy and we were far too for the brutal honesty that was necessary. Confused

TaraR2020 · 19/05/2021 00:11

*air in there

TaraR2020 · 19/05/2021 00:12

*far too nice

sigh

You are mistaken. The smell is not "spunk". Nor is it crusty tissues or wank socks. The posters saying it's ejaculate are very clearly wrong, and it's puerile to claim such a thing.

This is the smell of hormones that follow teenage boys around. If they sleep on the couch, the living room smells of it. It follows them around and usually appears after sleep as this is when sweat and breath and humidity and heat mingle together with the hormones.

They can't help it, but to snigger and suggest it's because they can't control their wanking is just juvenile and pathetic.

@GroggyLegs

As the mother of 2 little boys, this thread is distressing.

Where are the people saying 'No this is very unusual?'

Hey @GroggyLegs it’s not all boys! My DS is 18 and has never been smelly (except after football!) He sleeps with his door open though so maybe that helps and is downstairs during the day, and he showers at least once a day. So don’t worry, it might not happen to your two!
Divineswirls · 19/05/2021 00:29

Ha yes my DS 15 room always smells a bit. However as he's obsessed with showering every morning it doesn't smell half as bad any more.

If however he hasn't showered for a couple of days omg you can cut through it with a knife. I make sure all his daily clothes go straight into the laundry basket and get washed asap.

AprilShowerThoughts · 19/05/2021 00:33

I've two teen boys. Fresh sheets once a week or thereabouts and the window open and as long as they're washing themselves each day their rooms don't really smell. Their dad wasn't/isn't a smelly person either. It can be genetic I reckon. I'm sure my teenage bedroom wasn't immaculate and fragrant, especially getting to grips with periods etc.
