Do your 12 year olds boys bedrooms, smell?

And if so, what of?

Mine is going through puberty - his voice has broken and he is going through a growth spurt. His bedroom smells every morning and I air it. It then smells again later in the afternoon when he’s back in it after school.

He doesn’t seem to smell though. I don’t know if it’s a bit of a sweet smell but it’s not a pleasant smell so not sure it is sweet. I really can’t describe it.

Going through this now. DS is 14, showers daily. He doesn't smell. The carpet is quite new and it doesn't smell, all soft furnishings are clean. Bedding clean. Clothes in wardrobe don't smell, bin emptied regularly.

His room smells whenever he's been in there for any length of time. I open the window first thing in the morning and then leave it open locked all day. If he's spent a couple of hours in his room doing homework in the evening I have to open the window again before bed time.

SirSamuelVimes · 18/05/2021 19:05

It's jizz.

TwoAndAnOnion · 18/05/2021 19:05

They just smell of 'bloke'

It doesn't matter how much deodorant they use, how often they shower, how often empty bins are emptied, sheets changed, or take away the laundry, they just stink. It doesn't matter if you get rid of the carpet and curtains and replace them with laminate and blinds.

My 20yo still whiffs, but my older mid 20s do not!

Love51 · 18/05/2021 19:06

@bettertimesarecomingnow

Hmm yes ds room can be stinky too so his window is open night and day and he has a Reed diffuser.

He showers every day but I think he sweats a lot in bed which doesn't help - as a baby his head was always soaking in the night too!

I've got one like that. He's only 7 though. I wash his pyjamas and bedding a lot and air his room. Happy to read any tips!

I remember viewing a house once with a teenage boy's room. I can still remember the smell - like a hamster cage. We didn't buy the house.

www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/11096426/mums-fall-out-teenagers-stop-liking-smell-scientists/
MOTHERS fall out with their teenage kids because they stop liking the way they smell, according to new research.

Strangly The Sun seemed to quote more about the actual study - what they did and found - all then the others papers that had similar headlines.

WhoKnew19 · 18/05/2021 19:10

Yep, utterly baffling as others have said too - DS doesn't smell in himself and has good hygiene, clean clothes and bedding, even the carpet is new. The smell is real though!

Riapia · 18/05/2021 19:11

What you describe is the smell of slugs and snails and puppy dogs tails.
Been known about for years.

TheresAnEyeInMeSoup · 18/05/2021 19:11

I had two brothers who shared a room when we were growing up. Their room when they were teenagers 🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮 especially if they had had an camping trip. But yep, teenage boys are stinky. Think it's the hormones.

OhRene · 18/05/2021 19:12

My 14 year old daughter has a smell of off milk but sweet too. It's gross.

One of her friends makes the room smell of BO. Really strong, bad BO.

Another has a completely different smell. The smell is similar to unwashed, greasy hair (though her hair isn't greasy as far as I can see)

They all smell differently but one thing for sure, they do bloody smell!

MrsS92 · 18/05/2021 19:12

We bought our house in October and I still can’t get the smell of their teenage boy out of one of the bedrooms !
Despite airing it everyday, it’s been scrubbed top to bottom multiple times and completely repainted 😂
I’ve resorted to sticking a load of plug in air fresheners in there which I don’t like, but what else can I do.

SquirrelFan · 18/05/2021 19:13

@onemouseplace Exactly. Hamster cage is how I always described it. Lasted a couple of years, tops.

StormBaby · 18/05/2021 19:17

I am now onto raising teenage boys numbers 3/4/5. 1 and 2 are fully grown. They all had or now have this smell. It’s not feet, or b.o, or hygiene issues. It must be pheromones

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 18/05/2021 19:18

DS is 27 and hasn't lived at home for 10 years. His room still stank. I recently got a charity to uplift all the furniture - including 2 single beds and 2 mattresses. The smell has finally gone!

waitingpatientlyforspring · 18/05/2021 19:19

Yes. Although he still isn't dry at night so it often smells of wee.

romany4 · 18/05/2021 19:20

Yep.
Mum of two sons here. Now adults
As puberty hit, their rooms were smelly and everything was sticky Grin

notacooldad · 18/05/2021 19:22

God yes, I remember this!
We had a couple of years where the lads absolutely hummed!😂
We were forever saying, 'mate get back in the shower and get some soap on yer"
Even the smell of Lynx was better than smelling them.
It doesn't last for ever. However our moaning must have left an impression on them as they are never out of the bloody shower! Now we are telling them to hurry up as we are paying the gas bill.

Justcurious93 · 18/05/2021 19:24

I'm a woman but I remember having friends round as a teenager and my mum used to say it smelt of teenage boy Grin not sweaty just a distinctive smell!

GroovyClementine · 18/05/2021 19:25

I grew up with four brothers.
Know that smell.
I call it clammy dick smell.
I think it's basically piss remnants on their pants, trousers and penile skin that has gone stale and sour combined with sweaty ball stink. Think hormone filled sweat plays a part personally but I have no scientific basis for that.

Sorry, I know, that is quite gross.

Georgyporky · 18/05/2021 19:26

Yeah, boys' rooms stink.
Crumpled, crusty tissues thrown under the bed do not help.

cakefanatic · 18/05/2021 19:26

I’d forgotten about teenage boy smell! It continues into adolescence because I remember university friends and housemates being the same. I assume it goes because my husband doesn’t smell like teenage boy.

I worked in a computational lab for a while during my phd where I was the only woman; that also smelled like ‘boy’

Shinesun14 · 18/05/2021 19:27

My ds is almost 14 and his room is awful 🤮 I make him shower twice a day as he also smells BO ey without.

Embroideredstars · 18/05/2021 19:27

Yep sadly the case here now he has turned 12 Sad have to keep opening curtains and windows.

He's taken to being messier too, he always used to put his clothes away and keep it tidy now there's stuff every clean clothes and dirty mixed up and wet towels on the floor!

Bessica1970 · 18/05/2021 19:28

Yes it’s a thing - as a secondary school teacher it’s now noticeable in the classroom ( year groups used to move around so the smell would move on with the class after an hour) now that the classes stay in the same room all day.
It starts with year 8, worst is year 9 then it starts to improve in year 10. Year 11 are fine (but then you start to get whiffs of weed!)
At least we get to keep the windows open 👍

Hallyup6 · 18/05/2021 19:28

Yeah, not just boys... I have two daughters (17 and 13) who refuse to use deodorant. Bleugh. I think it's a teenage thing in general.
