As an adult what scares you?

I’m 30, not scared of anything (apart from something happening to my child or myself leaving my child motherless) but any pointy fingered creature, the plague doctor bird mask really terrifies me, I watched a movie once called the poughkeepsie tapes & was so scared I actually threw up! (I was led to believe it was real footage at the time) as an adult what things scare you?

Some films have scared me a bit (a film called Sinister was scary), things about ghosts etc. The Bent neck lady until I saw the episode about her, plus the faceless ghosts on the sequel to that the show (name momentarily has left me)
None of them make me scared after the film though although when I was younger I would be scared afterward.
Nothing scares me any more apart from real things like something happening to my family.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/04/2021 13:52

Oh blimey all sorts of things.
I was at a little fete once in London and a man in a plague doctor mask was moving slowly around, looming over small children. Made my hair stand on end ! He wasn’t part of the Summer fete, it was extremely strange.
I hate the underside of ships out of the water, the hull gives me the horrors.
Also piers, any deep swirling water.
Stairs with gaps.

Certain spaces, like gorges.

PopsicleHustler · 29/04/2021 13:59

Stairs with gaps

Having to deal with the chicken after I have carved it on a Sunday. touching those bones makes me sick. However I can hold a drumstick. Strange.

Dark alleyways.

Silent hill, horrible film. Very scary and that other horror starring Rose Byrne. Forget what it's called. Very creepy.

I also had a bad stomach in the cinema watching Paranormal activity 3. I felt so sick watching it and beleive watching movies about evil spirits attracts them to you and your home.

Nuffaluff · 29/04/2021 14:04

Some films are too much for me now. After I watched ‘The Ring’ years and years ago I went right off horror (although some are fine like ‘Get Out’ - what a brilliant film).
In real life? The driving and parking that some parents do on the school run plus the driving of some young lads in the streets around where we live. I just imagine my children getting run over.

Ginger89 · 29/04/2021 14:05

Oh yes stairs with gaps is another can’t get up or down them fast enough without thinking a hand will poke through & ankle grab! Ah is it the haunting of hill house ozgirl75? Any particular reason about the hull of horror? Interesting stuff!

Double decker buses is another, the overwhelming fear of it tipping over whilst on a bend!

Ozgirl75 · 29/04/2021 14:10

Yes @Ginger89 it is the haunting of hill house. Very jump making, creepy and scary and then ultimately sad. Brilliant show and one of the few to make me think, when I wake up in the night, “but what if I look up and the bent neck lady is there?”

idontlikealdi · 29/04/2021 14:13

Dying.
The train when I go over the Thames and it tipping in.
Planes.

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 29/04/2021 14:18

Clowns
Spiders
Recurring patterns in nature. Can't remember the name and I'm not googling it cos that brings up images and I'll be off all day.

My mind ☹️

SpaghettiSpoons · 29/04/2021 14:21

I live in a place where there scary snakes. My biggest fear is going to a wee half a sleep and ones coming up the toilet. I swear, that shit really happens!!

Giggorata · 29/04/2021 14:22

Apart from the phobia things like spiders:

Aggressive drunken people
Machinery going dangerously wrong, like planes, lifts, etc.
Rabies

PeteGibbons · 29/04/2021 14:25

Cows, the dark, death of my children/partner, climate change, facism, creepy men. In no particular order!

Absolutely LOVED Haunting of Hill House/Bly Manor.

I’m not great with violence and gory crime shows...so have tried to start Line of Duty but it’s too graphic for me, parts of Luther were a bit much. I close my eyes during war and battle scenes. Oddly I’m fine with scary horror as long as it’s not very gory and I love a gothic aesthetic and generally “spooky” things.

I’m so scared of ventriloquist dummies that I nearly vomit when I see them. Started in childhood, never got over it. Have to switch channels if they come on. Yet Chucky....fine Confused.

I find grown pigs terrifying. I got chased by some wild boar just a couple of years ago - it was awful, I thought I was going to fall and they’d get on top of me and snuffle me up, the heavy breathing and the squealing erggggggggh. I think I’d die of fright if I was trapped in a pig pen.

Not great with heights. I’m convinced I’ll accidentally throw myself off or lose my balance.

And then...there’s a lot of ideological stuff I just find very scary. I’m pretty scared for the next generation and babies being born today.

Strokethefurrywall · 29/04/2021 14:32

Really deep holes give me the heebies, especially when it’s deep holes in the ocean.
Swimming in water I can’t see the bottom of
The girl from The Exorcist
Plague masks
Anything with more than 2 eyes

Strokethefurrywall · 29/04/2021 14:33

Oh my god, Luthur I forgot about that. Was pregnant when I watched the one with the man crawling out from under the bed and I was so unsettled I burst into tears.

Strokethefurrywall · 29/04/2021 14:34

Oh and the ones with the guys rolling dice to see who they’d kill next and how they would do it... such a mindfuck of an episode!

MizMoonshine · 29/04/2021 14:35

Everything.

I've got hideous health anxiety. So I'm scared of every ache, pain or blemish.

Scared of heights, spiders, the dark, deep water, broken glass and splintered wood.

I'm scared of big crowds and also wide open spaces. I'm scared of elevators.

I'm scared of falling down the stairs. I'm specifically scared of breaking my neck.

Terrified of anything happening to my kids.

Scared of the paranormal. I fully believe in demons.

Life is a bundle of fun with me!

Sparklfairy · 29/04/2021 14:38

@Strokethefurrywall remember the luther episode when the killer in the horrible mask live streamed knocking on random doors late at night. First house didnt answer, luther and co frantically trying to read numberplates on screen to find out where he was...

Second house answered and they all had to watch him die live before they could get there Shock

YetAnotherSpartacus · 29/04/2021 14:40

Planes falling out of the sky.

DishingOutDone · 29/04/2021 14:41

@SirVixofVixHall you appear to be me. However I think fears about ships piers water stairs etc are more common than we might think. Since I found others with the same fears I fear them less if that makes sense.

Strokethefurrywall · 29/04/2021 14:44

@Sparklfairy 🤮 Shit like that made me turn off the TV and reach for brain bleach. Luther affected me mentally far more than anything else I’ve ever watched.
Supernatural Horror movies are awful because it’s usually a “what if” situation. We know creepy dolls aren’t going to try and kill us on a day to day basis.
But Luthur... man that show made me terrified of the mundane and that was far scarier than creepy dolls.
