As an adult what scares you?

I’m 30, not scared of anything (apart from something happening to my child or myself leaving my child motherless) but any pointy fingered creature, the plague doctor bird mask really terrifies me, I watched a movie once called the poughkeepsie tapes & was so scared I actually threw up! (I was led to believe it was real footage at the time) as an adult what things scare you?

Sleep paralysis thank god i havent had one in ages.
Looking in the mirror in the dark,im afraid i will see not me looking back.

Anystarinthesky · 29/04/2021 16:15

When I was a child I thought there might be snakes under the bed, so
I would jump 2 metres off the bed towards the door to avoid them!

I have a fear of swimming in deep water in the sea.

yuccaplant · 29/04/2021 16:16

The ocean- the depth of it freaks me out.
Boats
This people that spray themselves gold and pretend to be statues. I can't for the life of me think of what they are actually called 😂

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 29/04/2021 16:18

I’m absolutely terrified of people in costumes. I’m ok and can deal with it when I’m expecting it but when they surprise me, I freak out completely.

We were in Disneyland and queued for what we thought was a Star Wars ride. Turned out it was a meet and greet with Darth Vader. He appeared at the front of the queue twice whilst we waited and I cried. Both times he appeared. DH ended up shielding me as we quickly walked straight through the meet and greet and left DSis and BIL there.

DeathMetalMum · 29/04/2021 16:22

Dogs.
Piers.
Have always been afraid of both for as long as I can remember.
I'm also now afraid heights. Never used to be but my legs just go to jelly.

IntermittentParps · 29/04/2021 16:23

Needles. I cannot look when I'm getting an injection or blood test. I don't even want the nurse to use the n word or explain what they're doing (it makes me feel faint); I'll just look the other way and you do your thing, thanks, and then I'll go.

Small spaces where I can't see a way out. In fact I even get a bit claustrophobic in my box room/office if I shut the door!

And the edge of things like train platforms, tall buildings etc. It's not the height per se, it's the feeling that I might leap off. On a holiday walk on the cliffs a while ago, I got actually tearful and panicky if DP went within his own height's length (IYSWIM) of the edge. I had really vivid images of him tripping and going over the edge.

BabyPotato · 29/04/2021 16:24

Wasps. And bees. And other flying bugs really.

Also the prospect of getting a vomiting bug. If someone in my family has it I get all panicky. Blush

Mimilamore · 29/04/2021 16:26

Locks, that different water level thing....
Edges, not heights, okay with that but not with the edge of the land.
Crowds, really densely packed crowds with no way out, even worse, crowds when you have children with you.
The underside of ships with propellers.
Trenches in the ocean.
Pot holes, narrow spaces where you can't turn round.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 29/04/2021 16:26

OP, I’d recommend not visiting the London dungeons, you know when things open again. They interact with the audience. I got put in a cage in a torture room, which was fine until the wall behind me opened and there was a man with a fucking plague doctor mask beckoning me to him with his finger. I screamed, pressed myself against the bars of the cage, making myself as small as possible and was quite close to passing out. Still he beckoned me to follow him. They let me out the cage and I pushed DH in the direction of the plague doctor and used him as a human shield. I didn’t have a problem with the plague doctor... until then. Absolutely terrifying. Bastard.

Other than that:
Birds and generally things with wings
Piers 🤢
Bridges and tunnels

EmeraldShamrock · 29/04/2021 16:27

An psychopath ex I haven't seen in over 20 years, he was 18 years older and lives like a maniac but the fucker is still alive somehow.
Dying while my DC are young.

Ifonlyidknownthen · 29/04/2021 16:28

Losing my kids, losing other loved ones, heights, motorway driving and people who want to harm others. Horror movies and other such things, I don't find scary at all

Batshitkerazy · 29/04/2021 16:29

I watched the Haunting of Bly Manor in October, and I still get scared in the middle of the night going to loo. I’m keep thinking I can see the lady in the lake on the landing Grin

lazylinguist · 29/04/2021 16:31

Spiders. That's about it really, apart from stuff like serious accidents or illnesses.

Rebelwithverysharpclaws · 29/04/2021 16:31

Moths, their fast flappy wings, their looking like a triangle on the wall.
However, hardly ever see them now with Climate Crisis.

sonicshoegazes · 29/04/2021 16:33

The old spice advert music-it makes me cry and feel sick?!

Plague masks
Ventriloquist dolls
Demonology
Possession
Heights
Crane flies
Sleeping with my back to the door and/or mirrors
The 'horror' film 'Troll' Confused
ET
Young Sherlock Holmes film (also has the old spice music in it!!!!)
Monks chanting

I could be here a while...

ihavethehighground · 29/04/2021 16:37

Knives , motorways, strange people who look unpredictable

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 29/04/2021 16:39

@Eastereggfan

Small holes in a pattern
Yes, I hate this too - as well as certain weird patterns freak me out. I tried to explain to a friend once that it looks infected or diseased or something - gross, can't look at it.
alwaySun · 29/04/2021 16:46

I can't sleep with the wardrobe's door open. This being said last night I slept with the wardrobe opened as my little one was sleeping and I didn't want to wake her up. Nothing happened Confused
Snakes

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 29/04/2021 16:50

Something happening to me and my children growing up without a mother

My children dying

Other family members dying

Stuff like rape/sexual abuse terrifies me

Planttrees · 29/04/2021 16:51

Spiders - very bad phobia
Heights or edges - I stay away as much as possible and don't really like going down stairs
Being underwater or underground
I avoid all scary or suspenseful films etc, but its more to do with not liking the suspense rather than actually being scared.

haggis81 · 29/04/2021 16:51

Climate change
Ecosystems collapse
Worse pandemics
Killer heat waves
Societal collapse

Wish I could just be scared of piers and clowns!

therocinante · 29/04/2021 16:51

Windows at night, high open ledges like cliffs, someone talking close behind me, the idea of getting pregnant ever, glass eyes (I KNOW that's awful and ableist, I don't feel good about it), clowns x100000.

IEat · 29/04/2021 16:55

Being in a tight dark space with no light ... could never go caving

Jumping off a wall, I swear I’d break my ankle if I did
