As an adult what scares you?

I’m 30, not scared of anything (apart from something happening to my child or myself leaving my child motherless) but any pointy fingered creature, the plague doctor bird mask really terrifies me, I watched a movie once called the poughkeepsie tapes & was so scared I actually threw up! (I was led to believe it was real footage at the time) as an adult what things scare you?

I’m not ‘scared’ of many things - there are plenty things that make me nervous but I wouldn’t consider most to count as true fear.

I’m scared of falling from heights/being close to the edge of a high thing.
I’m scared of the thought of swimming in natural bodies of water because I have to do water safety training for my job and subsequently I know how easy it is to drown in ‘safe’ water.

I’m an engineer and my brain works ridiculously rationally so most things that make me nervous can be rationalised and risk assessed. The only genuine fears are where you can’t eradicate risk.
I have severe anxiety around travel but I don’t consider that a fear - I’m not scared of bad things happening in travel - it’s a mental issue. So I wouldn’t count that.

Snakes
Catfish
Pike
Boat hulls under water when swimming - they look terrifying

BumCat · 29/04/2021 16:58

Spiders
Bananas
Concealed meat (lol)
Concealed dried fruit

Being driven up a steep hill. Driving myself I'm fine, going downhill is fine but I have an irrational fear that the car will roll or tip backwards.

Waves crashing too, the ocean is terrifying to me.

I watched a film (the hostel i think) where someone tied to a chair had their achilles tendon and the back of their ankle slashed with a blade so that's another fear that is very unlikely to happen.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 29/04/2021 17:08

I have always been really hyper-sensitive to anything containing horror/gore. Can't cope at all - even with the mildest suggestion of violence.

I'm a bit of a wimp really.

Also:
Gas masks REALLY freak me out
Firework safety adverts when I was a kid
Nuclear war survival public info films 'Protect and Survive' (showing my age here)
Things with lots of holes
Lightning
Deep water (never sufficiently got over my fears to be able to swim.)
The evil bunnies from Watership Down

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 29/04/2021 17:15

The Fens. Driving through makes me feel so uneasy!

Had to stop watching The Haunting of Hill House, got through the first episode and then stayed awake all night terrified. Not for me! I used to love horror but I can't handle it now, my imagination goes into overdrive.

Buffaloskull · 29/04/2021 17:17

Aggressive women, far more scared of an aggressive woman than a man Confused Stems from physical/emotional abuse from mother and sisters as a child. Cant shake it off.
Illness (health anxiety, probably wouldn't care if something happened to me on a personal level but I wouldn't want to leave dd without a mother)
Boiler blowing the house up.
Fire.

TheMostHappy · 29/04/2021 17:18

The idea of a plague is pretty terrifying for me and especially a zombie apocalypse- I have recurring nightmares about this. My family are geographically spread out and I don't know what we would do. It messes with my head trying to plan it out.

PiccalilliChilli · 29/04/2021 17:18

Rollercoasters. Actually, theme parks in general. I don't like paying for being scared.

Open sea/ocean.

Lizards, snakes, crocodiles etc.

Riding a bike in some parts of London. F*cking scary.

Buffaloskull · 29/04/2021 17:19

Oh! And wind turbines Confused

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 29/04/2021 17:20

Slugs. Fucking terrified of them Blush

Moomin12345 · 29/04/2021 17:21

Having to waste my life on pointless commutes.

Buffaloskull · 29/04/2021 17:23

Ffs...
Also; wasps. The idea that they can sting you anytime they take the fancy. Bees I'm fine with.
(Stung by a wasp as a kid)
I'm one if those people to flap around ridiculously whenever a wasp comes near them Blush

XenoBitch · 29/04/2021 17:23

Needles (as in ones used for medical procedures)
Doctors and nurses
Being out of control (I have MH issues)
Small buttons and beads, if they are not attached to anything.
Films about apocalyptic stuff that could happen. Can't watch them.
Bodies of water.

XenoBitch · 29/04/2021 17:24

Oh, and cruise ships! If I see them offshore, I freak out. Can't look at them. They just seem too big and impossible to exist.

CheerfulBunny · 29/04/2021 17:26

Planes, specifically crashing in one
Being underground, caves etc. My dad was buried alive when he was 21 and I think him telling me about it has messed me up a bit
Most medical things. I cannot bear 'Casualty' or 'Holby City'

I am the same about being driven up a hill! If I'm driving I'm not thrilled about it (not many steep hills round here anyway) but I feel in control. Oddly downhill is ok?
MiddleEasternMummy · 29/04/2021 17:33

Birds , especially sea gulls . 😱

I would like a bit more info on how your dad was buried alive [ghoulish] that is horrifying.
MozzchopsThirty · 29/04/2021 17:40

Having an open abdomen after bowel surgery, or any kind of bowel protrusion (I have seen my insides once, I think I would die if it happened again)

Paranormal films, exorcism or similar - it makes me think I'm opening up my mind and my home to evil

Flying over water, oh god I hate it, I will be anxious until we're over land.

Flying in general but I'm much better at managing now with large amounts of alcohol and drugs Grin

CheerfulBunny · 29/04/2021 17:40

@BumBurnerBum He was a miner and the coal face collapsed, burying him and a mate. He had a fractured leg and the resulting wound had to be kept open to remove the coal dust.. which is enough to give any child a complex! He used to talk about it very easily though! Seemingly had no psychological scars.

idrinkchocolatemilk · 29/04/2021 17:50

I’m petrified of the dark I still have to sleep with a light on at 29!

Also, dark water makes me shudder. You know when you can’t see what’s going on in the water? No way! I won’t even swim to the deep end of a swimming pool if it looks dark.

BlitheringBlathers · 29/04/2021 18:02

Ooh this is a good thread! For me it's spiders/daddy long legs 😓 and a few years back I watched this terrifying video on YouTube...I've since tried finding it to show other people but have no idea how to find it (I came across it accidentally). It was old black and white footage of a man (he might've been a prince but not sure), I think he was bandaged and it was something about self mutilation and he was rocking back and forth in a chair. I don't remember many details but it really scared me at the time!!

halcyondays · 29/04/2021 18:09

As an adult, being an adult!

housecoat1968 · 29/04/2021 18:11

Tsunamis. I live in the West Midlands but seeing pictures of beaches where the sea gets sucked out before pouring back gives me the shivers.
