As an adult what scares you?

I’m 30, not scared of anything (apart from something happening to my child or myself leaving my child motherless) but any pointy fingered creature, the plague doctor bird mask really terrifies me, I watched a movie once called the poughkeepsie tapes & was so scared I actually threw up! (I was led to believe it was real footage at the time) as an adult what things scare you?

Heights where you can see directly below you.

TooManyAnimals94 · 29/04/2021 18:28

People wearing animal masks especially horse ones.
Scuba diving- was so disappointed as I was really looking forward to it but its the only thing that has ever given me a full on panic attack.

XenoBitch · 29/04/2021 18:34

@housecoat1968

Tsunamis. I live in the West Midlands but seeing pictures of beaches where the sea gets sucked out before pouring back gives me the shivers.
Ugh, yes! I have recurring dreams about them.
M4J4 · 29/04/2021 18:37

I have a friend who is terrified of sharks, and I never got that. I understand if she's scared at the beach or ocean, but she's scared in her bathroom. What could happen? But I know phobias aren't always rational.

Tambora · 29/04/2021 18:44

The dentist.

MistyMargaret · 29/04/2021 18:44

Nothing creepy/ superstitious, but quite a few things:

  1. Snow
  2. Vomiting
  3. Illness
  4. Medical settings/ medical procedures (it's a bugger being morbidly afraid of both 3 and 4. Living through a pandemic has been a form of torture.)
maddiemookins16mum · 29/04/2021 18:47

Snakes.
Overtaking big lorries on the motorway.

GlumyGloomer · 29/04/2021 18:50

Many things, but today I add to the list whatever that thing is in the op pictures!
It's been an actual thought since having kids that trying to get a toddler to eg go upstairs quickly to escape and kind of horror movie menace would add a whole new harrowing dimension.

jaundicedoutlook · 29/04/2021 18:50

These (Geji Geji).

Especially the noise they make on the floor at night.

Absolute horrors.

Twelveisthebestnumber · 29/04/2021 18:50

Men with long finger nails.
Maggots.
Sailing on the ocean at night when there are no stars.
What's in the ocean that I can't see.
Heights if I'm not secured to something.
And that jerky bendy woman from The Ring although that got a little better when I saw her not in costume doing the moves.

notagainmummy · 29/04/2021 18:53

Highwire tight roap walkers. The man walking between the twin towers terrified me.

Rosewood017 · 29/04/2021 18:53

@Moonwatcher1234 I find whales eerie too, mainly the sheer size of them compared to humans! Couldn't watch Pinocchio as a kid.
Imagine being on a lilo and a whale swimming by!

Weirdly I decided to go on a whale watch in Iceland to face my fears and it was quite amazing. Even more strange they were incredibly hard to find! Several excursions went on for 6 hours without seeing anything so I didn't hold out hope, but we did see some humpbacks in the end after being tipped off by some fishermen.

GinJeanie · 29/04/2021 18:55

Pinocchio 😱
Nuns, particularly wearing those horrifying cornette wimples (Google if you dare)
The thought of scuba diving in deep, dark ocean off UK
Lots of holes in a pattern (Trypophobia - didn't know this until I read about it on Mumsnet. Feel sick just thinking about it!)

JustMeAndWheatley · 29/04/2021 18:57

Public speaking
Cliffs
Clowns
Rats

ddl1 · 29/04/2021 18:58

Illness - pandemic has made my fears worse, but even in pre-Covid times I was very health-anxious. I was chronically ill for many years in my youth, and I'm terrified of going back to that time.

Moonwatcher1234 · 29/04/2021 19:02

Well done, you! Great to face your fears and hope it helped. I imagine doing the same sometimes but think I would faint if I ever spotted one in real life. Already feel shaky when blue planet is on!

Crankley · 29/04/2021 19:02

Nothing major.

I hate horror films and won't watch them.

I'm claustrophobic and have a massive fear of being in crowds or confined spaces so ensure I'm never in that situation. I hate wearing masks but would consider myself pathetic if I didn't wear one for a short period of time, eg going to the surgery to see the nurse or popping into a shop.

The dark. My bathroom light is left on all night. Without that I would have screaming nightmares.

Cannotgarden · 29/04/2021 19:05

Wtf is that thing? Does it live in the UK?

Sinkholes are my fear. I have regular nightmares about suddenly falling into one or DC or DH falling into one and the ground just falling away and there's nothing I can do as they disappear

GameSetMatch · 29/04/2021 19:06

My SIL scares me, I know I’m a grown woman but she’s so shouty and opinionated.

Dying young leaving my children motherless

Snakes

Mice

Rats

ohidoliketobe · 29/04/2021 19:07

Aside from anything happening to DCs/ DH:

  • flying
  • bridges
  • enclosed crowded spaces
  • being trapped in a fire/ crush, I always check for fire escapes
  • man made things which seem 'too big' like ships, suspension Bridge wires, enormous statues etc. There is a name for this but can't recall it
  • public speaking
CurryLover55 · 29/04/2021 19:09

There was an episode of Luther where the killer hid in the loft - just awful!
I don’t really do horror/ supernatural films at all.
Dolls - oh my God, terrifying! I was very glad DD wasn’t really into them!
Big moths
Not brilliant with lifts, although the technology is brilliant these days
Certain fairground rides
Something happening to my family or pets
Covid 19 mutating more & more

Orangesand · 29/04/2021 19:11

Thought of another one..

Watching those videos where 'daredevils' take selfies on top of really tall building roofs, or hanging by one arm etc

There's actually one video of a guy doing pull ups on a building ledge and the guys loses his grip and falls and he actually died (obviously you don't see that, you just seen him slip) It makes me feel sick with terror

Lumene · 29/04/2021 19:12

Driving, wasps, and my SIL in a bad mood.

bloodywhitecat · 29/04/2021 19:17

There used to be not much that scared me but last year DP was diagnosed with cancer and it is not curable. His cancer has a 2% 5 year survival rate provided there is no spread and sadly his had already spread. Now the future scares me.

LemonRoses · 29/04/2021 19:20

Snakes even grass snakes. Even pictures of snakes.

Very high edges. Fine at great height with just a piece of string but an unprotected edge turns my stomach. Fine walking across canyons on rope bridges but a footpath on a cliff edge definitely not.
