As an adult what scares you?

Ginger89 · 29/04/2021 13:45

I’m 30, not scared of anything (apart from something happening to my child or myself leaving my child motherless) but any pointy fingered creature, the plague doctor bird mask really terrifies me, I watched a movie once called the poughkeepsie tapes & was so scared I actually threw up! (I was led to believe it was real footage at the time) as an adult what things scare you?

@skirk64 I don't like change either, very unsettling...

Imissmoominmama · 30/04/2021 09:03

Dementia. It runs in our family, but only in the women. I think about making plans for a swift exit if it ever becomes evident that I’m going the same way Sad.

poppycat10 · 30/04/2021 09:06

My husband getting dementia.

Helicopters flying over inhabited areas and falling out of the sky. At least a plane has wings and may be able to glide to somewhere less populous, a helicopter just drops like a stone.

Lightning - lots of trees around my house

Gales - lots of trees around my house

Heights

@CurryLover55

I really hate empty swimming pools
Uggh yes. The wrongness.
Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 30/04/2021 09:11

Swimming over patches of rocks in the sea. Horrible dark blobs beneath you. I have to swim round them.

Werewolves. I know they don't exist but I still imagine them stalking me if I'm outside alone at night.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 30/04/2021 09:34

Jordan Peterson scares me!

He's so bloody intense!

LifeinPieces21 · 30/04/2021 09:51

Tidal waves. I sometimes have nightmares about them.

Last year on holiday a waiter joked one was coming as we watched the cruise ships coming in. I could have cried.

BonesJones · 30/04/2021 10:01

The thought of being forcibly locked in a small space. I read and listen to some true crime stuff and there was a case of a woman being locked in a tiny box overnight. Occasionally I wake up thinking about it and have to walk around the house and do some deep breathing to get over the stress / fear! It's my worst nightmare.

LadyPoison · 30/04/2021 10:03

Other people.

That's it really.

HarkAVagrant · 30/04/2021 10:30
@HarkAVagrant but - mirrors don't do that, do they?

I don't watch horror films.

I don't feel scared much, though there are a lot of things I consider I need to be cautious about.

However, every time I open a new packet of paracetamol I remember a programme H was watching years ago (possibly Spooks) in which someone died after taking paracetamol which had been laced with something hideous by terrorists. I can't say that my habit of buying painkillers several packs in advance hasn't been influenced by this...
Of course not! Fears are irrational.

Eyjafjallajokulldottir · 30/04/2021 11:28

I think @grantoderek needs a break from the Internet. Seems to be getting a bit much for you doesn't it

Notjustanymum · 30/04/2021 14:18

@bloodywhitecat
So sorry to hear that 💐💐💐
Mine is the future of my children in a world where the gap is widening between the haves and the have-nots...

Moonwatcher1234 · 30/04/2021 14:27

@JudyGemstone

My daughter is scared of whales, she’ll be reassured to know she’s not the only one! Not sure I could get her out on a boat though!
No way! I’m actually reassured to now know of two people with the same fear. Has felt utterly ridiculous my whole life but that’s the thing with phobias...they are irrational. Good luck to your daughter with overcoming it

A few more:

I'm not afraid of heights in the sense of just BEING somewhere high up; but I am afraid of situations where I have to climb, or otherwise control my movements in a potentially dangerous situation. Thus, I'm not afraid of flying, because controlling the plane is the pilot's job, not mine; but I'm scared of climbing ladders, getting on and off escalators, etc. I have some co-ordination difficulties, so these are not entirely unreasonable fears.

I am also afraid of other people becoming angry or upset with me because of my poor co-ordination, or anything related to my physical difficulties, which can be seen as 'just not bothering'. A lot of this goes back to childhood. I don't have the same sort of fear of ANY sort of confrontation; just things that relate to my physical difficulties.

Icy pavements and slipping on them.

Having my birthday and new age treated as a special day, and as anyone's business but mine!

A weird one: distorting mirrors, and looking directly into anything (e.g. a metal tap) with a distorting-mirror effect.

Woodpecker22:

Deformed vegetables
Slugs
Priti Patel

I don't mind the deformed vegetables, or even the slugs particularly, but I entirely agree about Priti Patel!

IntermittentParps · 30/04/2021 15:15

jaundicedoutlook, the FUCK are those?!?? I hope they don't exist in the UK...

HideousKinky · 30/04/2021 16:20

That I might ever cause the death of, or serious harm to, another person.

EarthAngel48 · 30/04/2021 17:48

Slugs if i see them I am physically sick. My Husband has to get my car out in the Autumn or I throw up everywhere.

honeybuns007 · 30/04/2021 18:02

yep yep yep. can't bear slugs. Don't like snails much but slugs are beyond
BlowDryRat · 30/04/2021 18:46

Scary films.
Spiders.
The dark. Although this wore off quite a lot after being up all night with the DC when they were little.

I am a massive scaredy cat and very jumpy.

Ravenspeckingearly · 30/04/2021 20:09

Many of the mums in DCs classes. Not because they are successful or beautiful or have it all together, but because they are very nasty. Sad

Jennylou88 · 30/04/2021 20:49

Spiders, wasps, cows when I'm walking through fields, drunken idiots when I'm on my own, conflict 🙈, horror films (bizarre as I used to love them) creepy ghost films, noises in the night when I'm on my own in the house!
I sound like such a wimp 😂

CallMeCleo · 30/04/2021 21:15

Small lifts, where I am the only person inside. Soon as the door shuts I go into a panic attack. And so I never use them.

tillytoodles1 · 30/04/2021 22:24

I used to be terrified of being alone, then my husband died suddenly. Its not scary being alone, just very boring.

BorderlineHappy · 01/05/2021 08:42

Old hospitals and asylum buildings.
The ones on the ghost program.

I still watch them but I would never investigate them.
