Easter eggs - none left

I've gone to M & S and Sainsbury's this afternoon, and there are no Easter eggs left . Literally none at all. Why??

OP posts:

@DiptyqueandDiamonds

Demand probably on the increase as more people WFH and eating purchased ‘safe in cupboard’ eggs, then having to make secret trips to the shop to replace eaten eggs. Possibly two trips.
This has made me laugh 😆 Am in bed absolutely desperate for some chocolate and am looking at my kids thinking 🤔...well I can replace tomorrow!!
thebillyotea · 01/04/2021 23:30

Well I don’t think it’s unreasonable to actually wait until Easter to buy Easter things.

I genuinely cannot think of a single good reason why I would wait.
See them, buy them, hide them. Done.

I can't shop for Easter eggs with my younger kids, there's no guarantee that I won't have other things to do than shop in the last week of school, I can't take a day off from work for Easter eggs...
With the added risk this year of either my kid or me being sent in isolation and waiting for the result of a covid test at any moment.

There's no rule, but I can't think of anything worst than driving round town to all the possible stockist for a few chocolate eggs, when the supermarkets were full of them only a couple of weeks ago.

Xmasbaby11 · 01/04/2021 23:31

Oh no. Must be regional - there are loads of Easter eggs in shops here.

safariboot · 01/04/2021 23:31

I was in a Birmingham Tesco today and there were loads. (Fox and Goose, if anyone in the area is looking). So I guess it varies by shop and maybe by area.

Morrisons click and collect a few days ago had a limited range with most out of stock, but the ones we ordered were available. (Small ones, because we already ate our big ones last week!)

PickAChew · 01/04/2021 23:33

Plenty in our sainsburys local, yesterday.

EmpressSuiko · 01/04/2021 23:36

They were restocking my local Tesco’s today,
I overheard the conversation the staff were having as one was in training. They were explaining that they didn’t order as much this year as last year they basically ended up giving a lot of left over stock away for free as they had so much left over, even after the usual sales for the excess stock and now this year they don’t have enough stock to refill all of the shelves.

TableFlowerss · 01/04/2021 23:36

I’ve been caught out by this a few years ago so I make sure I buy them early. It’s nothing new

subbysammiexoxo · 01/04/2021 23:36

tesco express usually have loads in

JustLyra · 01/04/2021 23:45

Thinking about it more, even though the shops have ran out on previous years I’m surprised they aren’t well stocked given that for a lot of people payday was this week.

LaganinaBubble · 01/04/2021 23:48

You see that's interesting in my M&S this afternoon there were LOADS of hot cross buns. Masses.
Not a hot cross bun to be seen here! Lots of drugs thoughHmm

LaganinaBubble · 01/04/2021 23:48

Oops! Drugs = eggs

Happycat1212 · 01/04/2021 23:50

Drugs Shock Grin

Iamthewombat · 01/04/2021 23:50

The fact that many shops have sold out by Maundy Thursday shows that the planners have got it right!

There are fewer leftover eggs being sold off on the cheap than there were ten years ago (in non-COVID years) because the data is better and the forecasting models are more sophisticated. Supply chain is an impressive discipline.

flowerbombVR · 01/04/2021 23:54

Grin drugs, now there's a thought....

Cherryblossom7 · 01/04/2021 23:55

@mytwocats

No chocolate eggs, you'll survive,it's not that traumatic,
It depends who you ask. I'd find it traumatic! :-P
kowari · 01/04/2021 23:56

There’s Valentines and Mothers Day first. Why are we so accepting of having to be 2 celebrations ahead all the time

Well this year there are three weeks between Mothers day and Easter, plenty of time even if you insist on waiting. Preparing for an occasion is not the same as celebrating it though, buying Easter eggs and putting them away before Mothers day hardly takes away from Mothers day.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 01/04/2021 23:57

It’s mini eggs I can’t find. Easter nest krispie cakes might have Smarties in them instead tomorrow! They will look like poor little squashed baby bird eggs 😭

flowerbombVR · 02/04/2021 00:01

😭🤣🤣🤣

ForgedInFire · 02/04/2021 00:10

Its been this way for a few years actually. Supermarkets don't want a huge excess to mark down to 25%, they would rather be understocked.

no it hasn't, not at all.

2020 was one of the worst ever and that followed a pretty bad 2019.

next week everyone will be back to moaning about food waste and the environment.*

I guess like most things, it's regional. I am a really disorganised person, I know now that if I leave it to the week before for anything then they are completely out of stock for miles. I overpaid for crap advent calanders. I carved watermelon at Halloween. I bought Easter eggs weeks in advance because last year, there was nothing left. And it wasn't much better the year before.

RightOnTheEdge · 02/04/2021 00:14

Really? Who buys Easter Eggs weeks in advance? Just for them to sit there until Easter Sunday...
Me! But only because I've been caught out like the OP too many times! Also because I'm on my own and my dc broke up from school last week so I need to get them early because they'll be with me 24/7 until they go back to school.

I agree with other people OP small shops are your best bet. My local Nisa and little corner shop had them in yesterday.

My Facebook is full of people filling them with cheesecake and ice cream so that's probably where they've all gone!

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 02/04/2021 00:21

Sainsbury’s had loads and loads of the same three eggs that clearly nobody wanted. Dairy milk, Yorkie, and I think the other was the Cadbury’s Oreo. There were pallets of the buggers.

I remember a few years back leaving it til the Saturday at Easter and there were about two leftover eggs in the aisle. Some poor employee was getting yelled at while trying to put out the BBQ stuff. So it’s not just this year. I remember I ended up buying my now DH a Glee themed egg with some crap mug because it was the only thing left.

Lachimolala · 02/04/2021 00:26

I’ve not been able to get any either, we’ve been self isolating until yesterday. Went to all the supermarkets and couldn’t find one. I think my kids might be a bit upset, I’ll have to bodge job it with sweets perhaps. I’m sure it’ll be okay.

Saladd0dger · 02/04/2021 00:28

Sorry everyone. I ate them all Grin

Coasterfan · 02/04/2021 00:29

Our Sainsbury’s local had loads today probably about 20 different types, and our co op petrol station also had a good selection!

joystir59 · 02/04/2021 00:34

Easter eggs meh. Can't get excited about them.
