Easter eggs - none left

I've gone to M & S and Sainsbury's this afternoon, and there are no Easter eggs left . Literally none at all. Why??

OP posts:
JesusIsAnyNameFree · 01/04/2021 23:11

@carrotsx5

The thing is I don't recall having this issue in the past - hence my terribly lax attitude. I guess I was wondering if it's the lockdown effect.
People do seem to be buying more for their kids because the past year has been so shit. I haven't bought mine any extra, 1 is more than enough and I don't look forwards to the sugar rush and crash..

Some are also doing silly things like cracking them open and filling them with alcohol and ice cream and other things (looking at you, Baileys)

Did they sell all the eggs last year, or were there loads left due to people not wanting to go to the supermarket? If so, are places like Tesco's and Sainsbury's now working with smaller egg budgets? Do supermarkets do that at all?
At work, if we don't use our entire say, tech budget, for the year, we get stuck with a smaller one next year because "you didn't need that much last year so we assume you don't this year". Yeah, the fact we didn't buy any new computers last year clearly means we don't need to buy any this year...

@littlepattilou

Who leaves it til the day before Good Friday to buy their Easter Eggs? Seriously? Confused
Everyone who can’t trust themselves to have them in the house for weeks of course!
BashfulClam · 01/04/2021 23:11

This has happened the last few years which is odd as I remember my dad buying cheap Easter eggs on the Saturday. All the shops here are also open
Full normal hours for the full sellers (Scotland so no Sunday laws, our shops can open as long as they like on a Sunday and saw Asda was advertising 8am-10pm)

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/04/2021 23:12

There are no eggs because I ate them all.

I'm sorry (shame emoticon).

Idontbelieveit12 · 01/04/2021 23:12

Oh bugger 😬 I need to get mine yet

Dyra · 01/04/2021 23:14

@thebillyotea

I am more annoyed that supermarkets stop selling hot cross buns so early! Every single year. They would still sell if they kept them on for a couple more weeks.

Not all of us started eating them in January.

You definitely want to go to the Waitrose near me. I was there on Wednesday (picking up my Easter eggs Grin) when the manager bought out a moving cage packed full to the brim with them. This was on top of the multiple displays throughout the store that were barely touched. Assistant helping him commented that they may have over-ordered this year, to which the manager replied with a disconsolate "yup". I look forward to when they're heavily discounted next Monday/Tuesday.

Thanking all goodness I picked up my eggs then. There wasn't a huge selection left.

@Happycat1212

It’s funny how time’s changes as I remember when I was Little my mum use to always buy them after Easter as they were always half price, now they sell out before Easter!
I had a Saturday job as a teenager and I specifically remember walking across the road to the co op on my lunch break and buying massive Easter eggs for 50p for a good few weeks post Easter. It was great Grin

No such luck now!

Beautiful3 · 01/04/2021 23:15

I bought mine when they came out in February! Last year I struggled getting the ones we wanted, so ended up with alternatives. Wouldn't have left it until the day before good Friday! Try corner shops.

thebillyotea · 01/04/2021 23:16

I am liking the "fill the egg with ice cream/various" ideas.. Easiest Easter desert ever.

They did look delicious.

Don't your kids get a visit from the Easter Bunny? Shock

Thewiseoneincognito · 01/04/2021 23:19

My big Tesco had none but the tiny corner shop Tesco literally 5 mins walk away was filled to the brim with them. I’ve just polished off a £1 creme egg one.

even eggs filled with fruit salads would work (not for any ridiculous "healthy" reason, I like the mix of fruits and chocolate) Grin

I'll have to buy even more eggs next year!

The ice cream shop near us sells Easter eggs filled with cheesecake. It’s heaven.

Every year I say I’ll make it myself and save a few quid, but buying it is way more of a treat. Plus I can have a nice flavour while DH and the kids have cream egg flavour

Cocomarine · 01/04/2021 23:21

@JesusIsAnyNameFree no - that is definitely not how it works! Easter Egg manufacturers will try to agree a non binding allocation with major supermarkets, because excess stock is not in their interests. The supermarkets also do not want to run out of stock! They want to sell every item they can. The manufacturer will be in proposing what they think will sell - for example, they might say that they should have lots more vegan eggs this year due to . They may also say - it’s been a hard year, people are really treating themselves - look at the trend from this price point of chocolate boxes to this higher price point . Perhaps in some budget retailers they’ll say - some people are struggling financially, take more lower than mid price point. The manufactures do a lot of analysis, as do the supermarkets themselves. Then together they make their best forecasts.

Iamthewombat · 01/04/2021 23:22

Easter is becoming Christmas 2.0, with consumerism barging into it. People are encouraged to buy eggs, do treasure hunts, give gifts, have water trees ,do water bonnets, books, etc

I know that this is an autocorrect thing, but I am entertained by the idea of ‘water trees’ and ‘water bonnets’.

Easiest Easter desert ever.

You need a water bonnet for your Easter desert.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 01/04/2021 23:23

there was a scramble on wednesday evening but i have memories in the past of being a distinct lack of easter eggs.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 01/04/2021 23:23

there will be loads available after easter!

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 01/04/2021 23:24

newsagents will have some.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 01/04/2021 23:25

@kowari

Really? Who buys Easter Eggs weeks in advance? Just for them to sit there until Easter Sunday... People who want to make sure they can get what they want when the shops are quiet and well stocked. Unless you literally don't have £2 per child spare until now then why wouldn't you? What is there to gain from waiting?
Well I don’t think it’s unreasonable to actually wait until Easter to buy Easter things.

Obviously commercialism is trying to pressure sales for a long as period as possible. But really there shouldn’t be any need to have Easter stuff sitting in your house for weeks in end just because the economy demands it.

There’s Valentines and Mothers Day first. Why are we so accepting of having to be 2 celebrations ahead all the time. It’s getting to the point where things will be out all year and any sense of occasion will be spoilt.

nettytree · 01/04/2021 23:26

They must all be in my local tesco. Had loads left earlier. Ystrad.

thebillyotea · 01/04/2021 23:26

😂

Life in the olden days used to be so much easier!

sadpapercourtesan · 01/04/2021 23:29

DH, DS2 and I are all pissing ourselves laughing at the sheer, petty cuntishness of coming onto this thread to post "Gosh, didn't you buy them weeks ago? It's Maundy Thursday!"

Peak MN.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 01/04/2021 23:29

@Cocomarine

Honestly, I have about as much knowledge of supermarkets as I do of building houses.

All I know is, if we don't use our budget, we get budget cuts, if we don't sell enough of our products, we get budget cuts, it's just all budget cuts.
