Easter eggs - none left

I've gone to M & S and Sainsbury's this afternoon, and there are no Easter eggs left . Literally none at all. Why??

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 02/04/2021 12:10

shops are going out of their way for their to be easter treats available to buy right up until the last minute

That’s obviously not the case or there wouldn’t be a national Easter egg shortage.

EssentialHummus · 02/04/2021 12:14

also, I'd wager that there are supply chain issues which mean pallets of them are in the wrong places. There are lots of posters on here saying that their local shops have plenty, so it doesn't seem much like a national shortage (unless I've missed some breaking news Grin). From the shop's POV, if you'd like to buy it they want to have it in the store so they get your money.

Anyway - happy to report back next week. It'll be lamb on the menu with hot cross buns, chocolate and roasting veg I reckon.

I can't understand where all these shops are that have sold out. Our shops have plenty, Tesco, Sainsburys.... There are now gaps in the shelves, yes, but masses of eggs, chocolate rabbits, the lot.

I work in a supermarket and we sold out of pretty much everything Easter related by Wednesday.

As of when I left last night at 11pm we had one bay of Easter stuff left to try and get rid of it but it was a literal jumble sale of half a box of lindt bunnies, a few creme eggs, a couple of boxes of the various types of bagged eggs (mini eggs/milkybar eggs etc) we had left, a few last remaining slightly dented Easter decor, a couple of the really expensive eggs that have been bashed so nobody wants them, various plastic tat/Easter colouring books for Easter baskets etc. So whilst we do have Easter stuff left it is literally the leftovers that we just want to get cleared before the weekend.

We have had Easter stuff available since mid February (as we went past Valentines and Mothers Day our Easter space increased) and our customer cafe - which is takeaway only so all the tables and chairs have been removed - has been filled with pallets of eggs for weeks.

I bought all of my eggs last Friday as we had loads of stock at that point but I knew that the stock levels would be drastically dwindling in the last week as we wouldn't be getting any more Easter deliveries.

People are trying to buy Easter eggs literally the day before Easter. As someone else pointed out, that's like trying to buy a Christmas tree on Christmas eve (although I have seen complaints before of not being able to buy on Christmas day itself, but that's a whole other level of stupidity).

I actually think Christmas Eve is the ideal time to put up a Christmas tree (but DH and I compromise on the weekend before Christmas). It makes me cringe to see people putting theirs up in November. But that's a whole other bitter MN argument...

Motheroftwofeline · 02/04/2021 12:33

I’ve had to buy a couple on Amazon at hostage prices 😫

Not put up your tree, BUY one.

You can decorate a craft one and buy separate chocolate, my DD has done that for an easter egg competition run by the organic veg box company that delivers to us. My DH said that Hotel Chocolat is open today if you have one near you.

Alreadyinmypyjamas · 02/04/2021 13:20

There were loads in my Tesco earlier today.

I know this doesn't help you, unless you're willing to travel to Gloucester (which no one in their right mind should be).

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 02/04/2021 13:21

Can I please point out that there is always exactly 3 weeks between Mother’s Day and Easter Sunday. Whether early or late the difference between those 2 events is always 3 weeks (in response to the comment about the difference being 3 weeks this year).

I buy Easter eggs immediately after Mother’s Day. I get the best choice that way. But not everyone wants to/can do that. I hope you get your Easter eggs OP.

Hardbackwriter · 02/04/2021 13:22

But you do buy a Christmas tree the day you put it up, don't you? We always do (around 20 Dec, never been a problem) - where do you store it if you're buying it in advance? I thought this Easter egg thing was a one-off failure on my part (first time I've ever needed to buy one as first year that I have a child old enough to eat one, and I also have a 6 week old, so I'm not on my A game at the moment) but it turns out there's a world of advance buying that I'm not doing!

Snally82 · 02/04/2021 13:28

Easter eggs available in Aldi, One Stop and a local garage today (the most choice being the the garage!)

AntiHop · 02/04/2021 13:28

I'm pleased to here this as it means less food waste.

Motheroftwofeline · 02/04/2021 13:29

I had NO idea about that 3 week thing (between Mother’s Day and Easter!)

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/04/2021 13:29

Happens every year!

BlackCatShadow · 02/04/2021 13:30

Just spoke to my mum and mentioned the Easter egg shortage and she was shocked as she was planning on buying hers and dad's tomorrow. I hope for their sake they are in a place that still has loads left otherwise she won't be happy!

kowari · 02/04/2021 13:33

I would not want to be tripping over them since New Year - do the people who buy eggs then just have enormous houses?
Do you have five children and buy for all your cousins and Aunt Moira's cat? Ours are all in the Christmas hamper basket.

ElderMillennial · 02/04/2021 13:35

But more importantly you don't have to buy them that early!
kowari · 02/04/2021 13:36

Had no idea about the three weeks between Mothers Day and Easter, looked it up and it's because it's linked to Lent. In Australia it's the second Sunday in May so the gap would vary.

Rukaya · 02/04/2021 13:41

You can't fathom that because your local shops have something, others may not. Do you always struggle with such basic concepts?

Sansaplans · 02/04/2021 13:43

Loads left here, not sure how many eggs people are buying that they would be 'tripping over them'.

InsufferablePerformanceFather · 02/04/2021 13:43

The masses have allowed the supermarkets to manipulate them with the FOMO. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. People used to raise an eyebrow at supermarkets marketing Easter goods in January, now they berate others for not submitting to the gods of commercialism and hoarding chocolate eggs by February. It's a funny old world.

callthevet · 02/04/2021 13:46

Went to Lidl this morning. One shelf with a beheaded white chocolate lamb

islockdownoveryet · 02/04/2021 13:46

It’s always like this it’s nothing new . I went earlier in the week and could see running low then .

bellabride · 02/04/2021 13:50

Not RTFT, but try corner shop?
I bought one for DM from small, local Co Op.

TableFlowerss · 02/04/2021 13:50
