Easter eggs - none left

I've gone to M & S and Sainsbury's this afternoon, and there are no Easter eggs left . Literally none at all. Why??

OP posts:
ElderMillennial · 02/04/2021 11:00

I would not want to be tripping over them since New Year - do the people who buy eggs then just have enormous houses?

They only need to be bought a week or two in advance. Buying eggs mid-March is hardly requires lots of organisation and storage.

Roselilly36 · 02/04/2021 11:00

We managed to buy some, none left in B&M that was first call, went to small coop and brought a couple, Aldi had a few left too. So hopefully you have got some too OP.

Cattenberg · 02/04/2021 11:00

I HATE feeling forced to buy seasonal stuff early.

Me too. It feels so fake and meaningless. Why not just celebrate Christmas on Halloween and Easter on Valentine’s Day?

Flowers24 · 02/04/2021 11:01

No, doesnt have to be that early, just 2 wks before?

Alsohuman · 02/04/2021 11:02

Am I the only person who’d have eaten them if they’d bought them weeks ago?

OverTheRubicon · 02/04/2021 11:04

@LillethCrane

I added them to my online shopping weeks ago. Last night’s delivery came- no Easter eggs available Hmm now there are none left in our local Tesco. Brilliant...!
This is what happened to me too! Ordered for Thursday, not delivered Sad
Biscuitburglar · 02/04/2021 11:06

Supermarkets have played it safe this year and been conservative with their orders. They got badly burnt last year and had to write off millions of pounds worth of Easter egg stock. Literally giving them away.

RedcurrantPuff · 02/04/2021 11:06

Our local Morrisons has loads, Aldi not so many.

RedcurrantPuff · 02/04/2021 11:07

I agree maybe shops aren’t ordering as much. I found it the same at Christmas. I couldn’t get any tins of chocolates even a good week or so before. Usually no problem

Redcrayons · 02/04/2021 11:08

@Alsohuman

Am I the only person who’d have eaten them if they’d bought them weeks ago?
I buy spares for this very reason 😂. If I don’t eat them, kids get a bonus one.

I’ve had mine weeks, I learnt the hard way not to leave it till Easter week.

Flowers24 · 02/04/2021 11:09

I bought myself a few extra chocolate bits when i got mine also, so i wouldnt be tempted :)

toocold54 · 02/04/2021 11:12

Omg me too! I thought I was going bad. I feel terrible as I have been so busy I’ve not had time to get one for my DD I’m going to get her a fancy box of chocs instead but it is nice having an Easter egg on Easter.

ElderMillennial · 02/04/2021 11:15

Amazon have some Easter eggs.

I bought some for the people I wanted to give them to and also a few for DH and I to snack on so I wasn't tempted to eat the ones that were to gift Grin

Souther · 02/04/2021 11:17

I've just been to my local Morrisons. Their aisle is still full of eggs.

Ilovelove · 02/04/2021 11:20

This happened to me one year and so now I buy them early.

I don't think its unusual for there to be none left by now.

MeanderingGently · 02/04/2021 11:32

I can't understand where all these shops are that have sold out. Our shops have plenty, Tesco, Sainsburys.... There are now gaps in the shelves, yes, but masses of eggs, chocolate rabbits, the lot.

And why do people leave things to the last minute? Surely you'd think ahead and buy a week or so in advance. You can't miss the fact Easter is on it's way....the stuff has been in the shops since after Christmas!!

SixDegrees · 02/04/2021 11:35

I bought the DC their eggs in February. Being all super organised for once.

And then I went to check on the eggs last weekend and couldn’t find them anywhere. Goodness only knows where I put them. But happily our small local Co-op had plenty of chocolate eggs in when I popped in there on Tuesday to look for replacements.

It’s worth trying smaller shops if the big supermarkets have sold out. And I was just browsing Amazon (we have Amazon Prime), and they’re still selling chocolate eggs with a next day delivery date.

ChronicallyCurious · 02/04/2021 11:39

It’s always like this. I’ve been caught out in the past so we always buy ours around 2.5 weeks before Easter. All the good ones were gone last week.

Jocasta2018 · 02/04/2021 11:44

I bought some mini eggs & rabbits for my bubble friend a couple of weeks ago as they're coming round for lunch on Easter Sunday.
I ate them on Wednesday.
And the hot cross buns.
Hopefully there'll be something left when I pop to Waitrose later on...

ClarkeGriffin · 02/04/2021 11:55

@Thewinterofdiscontent

It's not the shops fault that these people are stupid. That's their fault.

Sorry but this makes me cross. The blatant commercialism sone people have bought into is incredible. How can people ge stupid for not buying Easter eggs before it’s even spring?
It’s just poxy chocolate - it’s the symbolism ie it’s Easter that’s the important bit ( not from a religious point of view just that it’s the holiday currently being celebrated).
How have we got to the point where a holiday becomes reliant on you buying something crap like chocolate out of season ie in winter for a celebration about Spring.

If its just blatant commercialism to you, then why do you even care if you can't buy any?

People are trying to buy Easter eggs literally the day before Easter. As someone else pointed out, that's like trying to buy a Christmas tree on Christmas eve (although I have seen complaints before of not being able to buy on Christmas day itself, but that's a whole other level of stupidity).

If it was that important to you, buy early. Don't wait until the day before. You're literally leaving it in the hands of the shoppers, who I will remind you last year over stocked on toilet paper. We aren't talking about rational people here.

SmudgeButt · 02/04/2021 12:04

Maybe it's because I bought 30?

Granted it was a couple of weeks back and they were for the food bank.

FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping · 02/04/2021 12:06

Plenty of Easter eggs/hot cross buns/Easter themed chocolates at my local Aldi this morning (lucky for me as although I bought an Easter egg for DD a while ago she announced last night that she can't wait for an Easter egg hunt on Sunday so I had to go in search of some mini eggs to hide around the house!)

I'm not sure if being in Scotland is a factor here: shops don't close early today or tomorrow and are open on Easter Sunday so there is that bit more selling time and so maybe a bit more stock ordered accordingly?

EssentialHummus · 02/04/2021 12:08

Just as another perspective - I run a food bank. The bulk of our stock is supermarket "surplus". I'd bet my house on the fact that next week and for fortnight after we'll be taking in hundreds of kilograms of easter eggs and hot cross buns (with an honourable mention to one high end supermarket which has been sending us weirdly flavoured hot cross buns since Jan; I expect they aren't selling well).

You may also be able to guess what the week after xmas looked like, and the week after Halloween Grin.

There is a huge amount of wastage in the system; shops are going out of their way for their to be easter treats available to buy right up until the last minute. And it's all worthless and unsellable as soon as the next day rolls round. I'm not quite sure what the answer is but the current system seems mad to me.

Sexnotgender · 02/04/2021 12:09

Hundreds in the Morrison’s I was in this morning.

Mamadothehump · 02/04/2021 12:09

My husband got all excited the other day when he remembered about all the (previously £1) eggs I bought for him after Easter last year for 25p each. I was in Tesco at 7:30am today and called him to tell him he wouldn't be getting the same this year!!!
