Is makeup a form of catfishing?

Okay hear me out. Before I start this thread I just want to say I’m NOT bashing women who wear makeup - I myself love makeup and wear it regularly. I’m just really interested in other peoples opinions.

Lately I’ve just been thinking about whether a full face of makeup could amount to cat fishing of some sort. I myself look completely different when I have a full face of makeup on. In fact when I wear makeup I am constantly catcalled and stared at by men. Whereas when I go out with absolutely nothing on that doesn’t happen as much. Sometimes I even think, “if only you saw me when I woke up this morning!” 😂

I was speaking about this with a couple of my friends who admitted that their boyfriends have yet to see them without makeup! That’s crazy to me! What if the person you’re with ends up totally not into your fresh face and the makeup kind of tricked them into thinking you look like something that in reality took a bunch of makeup and an hour at the mirror to achieve.

Just a thought.

YABU - don’t be so stupid!
YANBU - to an extent makeup can put out a false image

YANBU. Make up can drastically alter appearance. I don't think this is laying any sort of 'blame' at women's doors.

If you're contouring, wearing heavy eyeliner and filled in lips you cannot tell me that you are not falsely representing yourself online to potential dates. I've deleted the dating app I was on, but the pics up where I wasn't wearing any make up.

Why should I feel that men will only find me attractive if I'm caked in make up with my hair straightened and dyed, pouting lips and cleavage on show? Hmm I'd rather be single than date a man like that.

cookiecreampie · 28/03/2021 14:12

I don't think it's catfishing but very heavy make up with all the contouring can make a woman look so different. I use make up to enhance my features, not mask my face and change me into someone unrecognisable. But I think most people can tell when a woman has natural beauty, to when it's just all make up and it's common sense to know that a woman is going to look different without make up.

SweatyPie · 28/03/2021 14:14

Online, it's very easy to change how you look. Heavy makeup+ filter\photo editing

But in real life it's easier to tell. Even though you can't see exactly how they are naturally it's not really deception because you can still see

So half right imo

CaesarsDream · 28/03/2021 14:15

If anything we should be discouraging women from following the Love Island effect, which only reinforces patriarchal expectations that women need to look a certain way/pornified to be deemed attractive or of any value to society.

viixie · 28/03/2021 14:26

I don't get time to wear makeup so often at the moment with three small children. Maybe twice a week at most. I'd never go to work without makeup on that. You know that dirty feeling you get when you haven't had a shower or you have greasy hair? That's how I feel when I go out without any makeup on. Anyone else?

DrSbaitso · 28/03/2021 14:34

If a man is too stupid to realise that my eyelids aren't really purple then he deserves everything he gets.

Thelnebriati · 28/03/2021 14:36

@Naunet

God women just can’t win. They’re expected by society to wear make up, shamed for not wearing it, and then called a catfish when they do 🙄
Exactly. I've never worn make up and dress like a tomboy, I used to get catcalled constantly. Its not the make up or the clothes.

Its the men.

That's not the point. You shouldn't be falsely representing your appearance to anyone. Many women look significantly different when wearing makeup.

It's not any different to a man falsely representing their career, hobbies or character profile. Or only posting pics with their mouths closed to hide horrible looking teeth.

expectopelargonium · 28/03/2021 15:14

Is makeup a form of catfishing?

No.

FedNlanders · 28/03/2021 15:15

Some people do stuff that makes them looks totally different, like a mask

RootyT00t · 28/03/2021 15:15

@CaesarsDream that is batshit Grin

jskei · 28/03/2021 15:29

Definition of Catfishing: Luring someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona.

No man got lured into a relationship because someone was wearing a bit of makeup. Its ludicrous.

There's another thread on here with woman whose hubby is telling her when to pee! Just having this conversation is about social control. Will this never end?

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 28/03/2021 15:32

I'm not for sale like a fucking meat pie, you know.

Which is why this is incel/MRA/misogynist territory - it's implying that the only purpose to a woman is in selling her body one way or the other.

Sorry moon cup, I chuckled at that.

Completely agree.

So why do so many women follow the Love Island/TOWIE look - to make themselves look pornofied for men? Which is what many men lust after these days or so I'm led to believe with all the images of heavily made up women in popular culture. Internalised misogyny?

Caking yourself in make up, fake tan and lashes and posting pouting pics on OLD is like offering yourself like meat pie on the altar of misogyny IMO.

What message is this sending to all women and girls though, that a female can only be deemed attractive by others/themselves if they plaster themselves in gloop/alter their appearance?

RootyT00t · 28/03/2021 16:01

One that they can dress and wear whatever the hell they like and it's nobody's business but their own.

Macncheeseballs · 28/03/2021 16:03

Thelma, I am tomboyish with little make-up and have very rarely been cat called,I always assumed because of how I dress

Macncheeseballs · 28/03/2021 16:03

*thelne

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 28/03/2021 16:04

@CaesarsDream many people, women and men, are what I term 'fashion victims', blindly following fashion and being scared to be different from others. Make up and tiny bikinis are just two examples.

I don't think we live in a world where anyone is scared to be different.

Has it dawned on you that maybe they want to wear it?

DrSbaitso · 28/03/2021 16:12

You shouldn't be falsely representing your appearance to anyone.

I'm giving you a very honest representation of what I look like with purple eyelids. If anyone is too dim to work out that they aren't really purple and that I'll look different when I take the paint off, that's on them. Someone that thick has far more important things to worry about, like how to come in out of the rain and how not to get eaten by a sabre toothed tiger.

Exactly that. The very essence of feminism.
