‘D’H has announced that Covid doesn’t exist.

Name changed for this.

One year since lockdown 1 began and DH has announced that Covid does not exist.

The illness is ‘no different to flu’, he is not having the vaccine because ‘he doesn’t need to’ and if he falls ill with any symptoms listed as Covid he will not be taking a test and will phone in sick with backache or some such nonsense.

AIBU to think WTF?
Apparently he has thought this all along and decided to let us know as he is sick of ‘having his freedom taken away from him’.

What started as a chat about weekly testing ended up with this.

I don’t know what to do with this information. All year (pre. weekly testing /vaccine rollout) he’s just gone along with it all.

So, along with AIBU to think he has lost his mind, WWYD or say in this situation?

I would sit him down to watch some of the programs which have been made on the issue and challenge his view of it then.

Realistically, this would just cause an argument though.

We dont have this with flu.?

Get him to listen to accounts from young people who have been in ICU with it....

He has form for ‘doing his own thing’ definitely. He says that the statistics clearly show that there has been peak in deaths but that this is no different to the yearly average. (FFS)

Mine is the same,we have had so many rows about it.He also says that the vaccine is designed to kill everyone.
When he starts on about it,I just ignore him now.

Up to you. I'm still having my tests and jab as soon as I'm offered it and I don't want to hear anything about it from you.
We will be doing just that. I’m struggling to even look at him right now let alone talk to him.

Is he supposed to test and not doing so? Do you have children and are they allowed to test?

I think three things:

  1. He can think what he likes but if it is law he should do it (really this is only isolate if he has symptoms), he can't put other people at risk as that is not respecting their beliefs
  2. Not testing and ringing in sick with back ache seems weird as under 10% tests come back positive so even if he thinks it is all made up he would have a 9/10 chance of not having to isolate
  3. I would really struggle to stay married to someone who believed something so far away from my own beliefs, it is so fundamental to believe in science or not. I know someone who doesn't believe dinosaurs are real and I just could not be married to them, because I would be Hmm the whole time.

Read up on covid denial - it is a fear response so presumably on some level he is psychologically comforted by thinking it is not a real risk.

Based on your OP I would attempt to educate him. Use small words and go slowly, as he’s thick.

Not sure where that quote came from but yes, it’s the sort of thing he would say (if he had the chance... not speaking to him atm!)

Yes, he should be testing. He says the tests give false positives. If you have a cold/ flu it will be positive.

I’m starting to think he’s actually an idiot.
(He is highly qualified academically)

The overwhelming thing I've taken away from this is the old maxim that 'You can't argue with stupid'. I wouldn't engage with him about it. Not sure what I'd do if he started breaking lockdown etc, or encouraging the DC in these actions. Poor you.

His freedom would well and truly be taken away from if he caught COVID and God forbid ended up with a life limiting long term condition or worse. Yes I get that most people will only ever suffer mild symptoms and make a full recovery but I just can't see how anyone would risk that. For themselves, their children, families...

If you have a cold/ flu it will be positive this is patently not true.
