‘D’H has announced that Covid doesn’t exist.

Name changed for this.

One year since lockdown 1 began and DH has announced that Covid does not exist.

The illness is ‘no different to flu’, he is not having the vaccine because ‘he doesn’t need to’ and if he falls ill with any symptoms listed as Covid he will not be taking a test and will phone in sick with backache or some such nonsense.

AIBU to think WTF?
Apparently he has thought this all along and decided to let us know as he is sick of ‘having his freedom taken away from him’.

What started as a chat about weekly testing ended up with this.

I don’t know what to do with this information. All year (pre. weekly testing /vaccine rollout) he’s just gone along with it all.

So, along with AIBU to think he has lost his mind, WWYD or say in this situation?

@NotNowPlzz

He says that because they prioritised Covid over everything else there were whole departments sitting around doing nothing.

This is true of some areas.

But also not true in many other areas of the country.

I know many people who have had non Covid hospital, GP and other medical investigations and treatment over the past 12 months.

It is true that some people think that other medical stuff isn't happening and are putting off calling. The nhs have tried to combat this with media releases etc.

@Disfordarkchocolate

I'm giving a talk next week on what it feels like to lose a parent to Covid. Shall I send him the link? People like this are so hurtful to people like me.
I agree. This is exactly why I find his opinion so abhorrent. He just says that people die from flu every year.

OP "He says that because they prioritised Covid over everything else there were whole departments sitting around doing nothing."

This won't make me popular but what the hell.

there a million nuances here. We know many doctors and nurses. Everyone at different hospitals and in different depts have different experiences. Yes, a lot of stuff went on the waiting list because, in some places, the expected influx didn't arrive. In some places it did.

Sadly this has become a very polarised argument but given the level of insanity that's gone on, I can see why people have got very varied hysterical views.

He might calm down and see facts and nuance later? I'm anti lockdown but CV and had the vax. This seems to confuse people.

Some people have forgotten all their shades of grey. It's very odd.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/03/2021 12:00

I would say to him "Can't argue with stupid" or "I'm not discussing this any further because your position is illogical and idiotic" and then leave him to it. I suspect that he enjoys going against the flow and the attention that it gives him. So cut off the attention, it's just a time-sucker for you anyway and I'm sure that you have better things to do.

OutOfLine · 27/03/2021 12:00

@CirqueDeMorgue

I'm relatively laid back about Covid but isn't he gonna feel a bit silly -when-- if he catches it?
I said that to him.

Let’s see if it’s just like having a bit of a cold then shall we?

He will never know though. He says he won’t take a test.

Gingernaut · 27/03/2021 12:01

Lateral Flow Tests show a lot of false NEGATIVES.

PCR Tests are a lot more accurate.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 27/03/2021 12:02

Is he young, healthy weight and no other health conditions?

SchrodingersUnicorn · 27/03/2021 12:02

So, going with his crazy for a moment, even if it were 'just flu' (which we know it isn't), does he think 'flu' is one disease? Has he heard of the Spanish flu? He does get that flu mutations can be deadly and - surprise, surprise - it's only because of vaccines we don't see big waves of flu deaths?
There is just no logic even within his crazy 'covid is flu' position.

Nith · 27/03/2021 12:03

Invite him to study microbiology and then look down a microscope at a flu virus compared with covid and its mutations and tell you whether they are the same.

Did he see the Kate Garraway documentary? Does he think her husband had flu?

MargaretThursday · 27/03/2021 12:04

If he's got symptoms, I'd suspect he thinks he does have covid and is scared. he's doing the head in the sand "if I don't know it is, then it isn't and I won't be ill."
My grandad did similar with pneumonia because he thought he had lung cancer. (heavy smoker). meant he was really ill before he sought medical help.

There is no doubt that other things were put on hold. Surgeries cancelled etc. That is a fact.

I’d divorce him.

I can’t stand people who announce controversial views for attention and I can’t stand stupid either.

I’ve seen it. He hasn’t and won’t bother. He’s not a scientist yet he knows better than they do. Idiot.

Yep. Flu is Flu apparently. All the same thing. Comes and goes, peaks and declines...

No. Middle aged, slightly overweight.

I tried to reason with him.

We have vaccines for all sorts of diseases. We have medical tests for all sorts of conditions.
He can’t get past the fact that this vaccine hasn’t been trialled.

Do you have children?

Yes

I'm an NHS nurse and I have worked throughout the pandemic - had to take a month off sick when I became infected with Covid and was seriously unwell for at least 21 days - and I think your idiotic husband needs to stop his ridiculous rhetoric. I have nursed people, healthy individuals, with Covid, who have lost their lives to an imaginary illness.

KatySun · 27/03/2021 12:16

Ghoul I am young (ish), healthy weight and was very fit, no other health conditions, I got long covid this time last year. I am still not fully recovered. My DD who was 16 at the time is similar. You can be young, healthy and no other health conditions and covid can still do real damage to your body.
Forgive me if i have misunderstood the reason for your post.

Outofline I agree with the PP who suggested cutting off the attention to him on this. You are wasting your breath trying to convince him. There is a legitimate public health concern if he does get symptoms and carries on his daily business, but one would hope at that point, he might think again.

Nanny0gg · 27/03/2021 12:16

Did they have the usual childhood vaccinations?

I agree. Hence this thread and the fact that I have been unable to be in the same room as him all day. I REALLY dislike him atm.

Many, many people feel this way.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 27/03/2021 12:17

In that case he’s very silly. Of course Covid exists but he been, say, age 30 and BMI 24 I’d say it’s low risk. But not age 45 and BMI 28 or whatever.
