‘D’H has announced that Covid doesn’t exist.

Name changed for this.

One year since lockdown 1 began and DH has announced that Covid does not exist.

The illness is ‘no different to flu’, he is not having the vaccine because ‘he doesn’t need to’ and if he falls ill with any symptoms listed as Covid he will not be taking a test and will phone in sick with backache or some such nonsense.

AIBU to think WTF?
Apparently he has thought this all along and decided to let us know as he is sick of ‘having his freedom taken away from him’.

What started as a chat about weekly testing ended up with this.

I don’t know what to do with this information. All year (pre. weekly testing /vaccine rollout) he’s just gone along with it all.

So, along with AIBU to think he has lost his mind, WWYD or say in this situation?

Did they have the usual childhood vaccinations?

Yes

It's weird that it's come one year on. Is it because lockdown has messed with him, and he wants it over and will do anything to justify doing what he pleases?

I wouldn't like children hearing this though.

OutOfLine · 27/03/2021 12:18

@roarfeckingroarr

Many, many people feel this way.
I know. I didn’t realise that my DH was one of them.

@roarfeckingroarr

Many, many people feel this way.
That is so worrying - because they are not rational.

Science isn't about what you 'feel'

I never realised there were so many people who had no grasp of reality.

Yes. He hasn’t seen his family for over a year. He wants to see them and says that the Government are keeping this thing going unnecessarily.

^and many, many people are stupid, unfortunately.

Has he been watching YouTube/browsing QAnon forums? This shit spreads like a virus in itself. It appeals to people who want to feel like they’re privileged and superior enough to be privy to some form of secret truth the ‘sheeple’ are too scared and stupid to consider. It’s a very deep wormhole to go down, and very insidious.

giao · 27/03/2021 12:22

Is he due a vaccine in the near future OP, is he scared of injections?

Strange he's only saying all this now.

FlyingBurrito · 27/03/2021 12:22

@OutOfLine

I’m starting to thing there is something wrong with his head though.
I do wonder what is wrong with the heads of people who despite overwhelming evidence from the whole world and experts in every country think that they know better

There must be some kind of misfire in their brain that stops them from comprehending that they can't possibly be right.

DustyMaiden · 27/03/2021 12:22

Unfortunately there is no vaccine for stupidity.

Aryavinalaff · 27/03/2021 12:24

Well I’m a teacher who yesterday tested positive. I’m in bed, breathless, sore and tired. I had a positive lateral flow followed by a positive pcr. As a person who is usually fit and well this is not like regular flu I have ever experienced before. I have never felt this unwell. It is REAL

OutOfLine · 27/03/2021 12:24

@giao

Interesting you should say that. He will have blood taken but it is an ordeal. Anxiety beforehand. He faints and needs longer appointments because of it.

There are definitely a lot of stupid people in this country. Unfortunately OP I don't think your husband is one of them.

Yes, His catagory can have the vaccine now.

What has his approach been up to this point?
Has he complied?

As someone who sat with my DH while he died from Covid, tell your Dh from me that he is a dick. And I count myself lucky that he didn’t die alone and I was one of the ones able to say goodbye.

TeacupDrama · 27/03/2021 12:31

I think it gets so polarised even among people who believe covid exists and that for some people it is serious and it is worse than flu in terms of numbers of deaths, slowness of recovery and long covid.
H.owever it is also true that governments never attempted to get to zero flu there was an accepted number of deaths per year depending on how counted ( whether just flu or other URTI) from 10,000 to 25,000 in UK per year, for most people it is mild and for some they never get symptoms and most recover just fine
Post flu symptoms like long covid have existed for years ME CFS but have rarely been taken seriously or researched much
you can be generally anti-lockdown to a greater or lesser extent and still be pro vaccinations and tests and isolation
people can be in favour of some restrictions and think others are counter productive or excessive or interfere with human rights.
Others think all rules are fine and have kept them and get anxious re others not keeping them and some think the rules aren't strict enough
Some think we will have to learn to live with Covid sooner or later so it may as well be sooner, others think Sweden got it right and their figures are marginally better than ours, others think there should be no restrictions outside but restrictions indoors
it is about nuance maybe you could say to DH that it is ok to not agree with lockdown is the best way forward and that other harms are worse than covid harms and the cure is worse than the disease and yes false positve exists without going to the batty end of thinking it doesn't exist, and it's a conspiracy, perhaps turn a blind eye to minor infringements You can disagree with government strategy and think they over egged the pudding with statistics suggesting most people had it when that was patently untrue and were reprimanded by ASA ( this reduces confidence in anything government say also of course the fact that governments are caught lying to us all the time does undermine well you can believe us on this one)) without being loopy, I think you can acknowledge that some things he is saying are at least partly true or are subjective opinion and other things are false
The French government is dealing with serious civil unrest over this far worse than here in UK

@Lentillover1900

Sorry if missed What has his approach been up to this point? Has he complied?
Yes. He has complied. He sees nobody other than work colleagues and us. He doesn’t go in shops or use public transport. He doesn’t travel. He hasn’t seen his family in over a year. However, he doesn’t wear a mask because he has had operations on his nose and can only breathe through his mouth.

I would say good riddance. It's his ilk that I truly hope reap what they sow in terms of covid.

Nor could I be in a relationship with someone like that.

Nyfluff · 27/03/2021 12:33

The most alarming thing is that he's kept this from you for a year. If he's not having a mental health crisis then I would have concerns about staying with him and being in sole charge of the kids. I mean, he'd have to be stupid and have questionable decision making abilities.

I have relatives who also believe it's just like flu. We've barely spoken for the past year because every time we do they tell me things that involve them breaking the rules and they don't like to hear any truths about Covid being a real and serious illness. They think i'm hysterical for following the rules (i'm CV with a disabled child), and I don't like spending time with selfish people, so I'm not sure what'll happen with our relationships after all this eases up again.

Fargonauts · 27/03/2021 12:34

Does he use social media a lot ? Facebook. Watch 'the social dilema' it's frightening how people are fed information to support their argument, no matter how irrational !

Try to get him to take a break from social media and instead show him information from fact checker websites and Snopes which debunks myths !

Beyond that there's not much more you can do. I managed to get through to a friend this way but they hadn't reached full idiocy!

OutOfLine · 27/03/2021 12:34

Biscuitsdisappear · 27/03/2021 12:37

So according to your husband's belief my sister nearly died from a severe attack of scotch mist?

StanfordPines · 27/03/2021 12:38

I got Covid two weeks ago. It spread through my work like wildfire even though we were being careful. 10 adults and a number of children caught it very quickly.
I’m lucky, despite being overweight I got it lightly and am up and about. Friends who got it the same time I did are much worse, still in bed, still needing to sleep after any kind of effort, like putting on a load of washing.

I’ve not had flu, but this isn’t flu.

Also we closed schools for swine flu but everyone has forgotten this.
