‘D’H has announced that Covid doesn’t exist.

Name changed for this.

One year since lockdown 1 began and DH has announced that Covid does not exist.

The illness is ‘no different to flu’, he is not having the vaccine because ‘he doesn’t need to’ and if he falls ill with any symptoms listed as Covid he will not be taking a test and will phone in sick with backache or some such nonsense.

AIBU to think WTF?
Apparently he has thought this all along and decided to let us know as he is sick of ‘having his freedom taken away from him’.

What started as a chat about weekly testing ended up with this.

I don’t know what to do with this information. All year (pre. weekly testing /vaccine rollout) he’s just gone along with it all.

So, along with AIBU to think he has lost his mind, WWYD or say in this situation?

He's a twat but my husband is the same. He doesn't say it doesn't exist because my mum had had it twice, but he believes he's had it and was "fine", and would be equally as fine if he were to get it again. He doesn't want the vaccine and tells me on a daily basis how useless it is. He was offered it through work but ignored the email.

Personally, I'm booked in for mine next week.

@OutOfLine

Cocomarine

It was the bit about the illness being no different from flu... I wasn’t sure if you meant he was saying it was just flu - as in, the same virus and we’re all just rather unseasonally having a does of THE SAME VIRUS.

Yes. He says that Covid is exactly the same as FLU. Exactly the same virus.

He doesn’t believe that COVID is ANY different to flu.
Therefore, there is no ‘COVID’ only ‘FLU’ which we have lived with for years.

So... If you asked him about SARS COV1 And SARS COV2

He wouldn't recognise either? Did he believe in SARS and MERS?

I realise that in the good old days, he might not have heard of them.

cryh · 27/03/2021 11:42

@OutOfLine I think it is OK if this is making you want to LTB, I am not saying do it right now but you are allowed to not like this and to find it affects your relationship.

HollowTalk · 27/03/2021 11:43

@OutOfLine

I tried to reason with him.

We have vaccines for all sorts of diseases. We have medical tests for all sorts of conditions.
He can’t get past the fact that this vaccine hasn’t been trialled.

But it has been trialled. My friend and her husband are over 70 and it was tested on both of them.
THisbackwithavengeance · 27/03/2021 11:43

He's actually not wrong in saying that for some people Covid presents itself as a flu like illness or a bad cough etc and they make a quick recovery.

I would just put it all down to lockdown stress.

He's an idiot for not getting the vaccine though as I will bet money that it will become a prerequisite of travelling abroad/getting holiday insurance etc.

Asposhasitgets · 27/03/2021 11:43

This is definitely a thing - a friend (who works in pharmacology, so I’d always thought of her as being quite scientific) is completely sucked in by all this, and posts two or three times a day on FB linking all sorts of legitimate-looking articles on similar subjects. Deaths going up in January tracking vaccine rollout, second wave before that was a fiction etc etc. I’ve had to block her but luckily I’m not married to her.
Not sure what she’s going to say when vaccine rollout continues and deaths come down, but I’ll never know!!

QueenPaw · 27/03/2021 11:44

@lightand yeah I get hesitancy.. more I think people now speak to doctors/consultant/hear from scientists and still go "nope, don't believe it"
I was hesitant because I don't know if the vaccine will protect me, spoke to my consultant who said yes, we don't know but best to have it anyway so I booked

OutOfLine · 27/03/2021 11:45

Yes, we talked about SARS.
‘Nobody closed the country down because of SARS.’ was his answer.

Mine went on about a bloke on YouTube whose plant tested positive, apparently this proves that it doesn’t exist and the tests are made up.Grin

Acidburn · 27/03/2021 11:46

Sounds like my brother in law. Except he thinks that Covid was invented on purpose to chip everyone through vaccination. He's got some underlying health condition, and he was offered vaccine earlier than others in his age group (he is 39), and now he drives everyone crazy with "I don't wanna do it cuz i don't want to be played by the Government, but i also want to be able to travel, so what should i do". I just feel like trlling him "Please Don't do it - leave the vaccine to someone who actually wants one". I think a lot of smart and educated people have lost their minds, to be honest.

FourDecades · 27/03/2021 11:46

I have been a Recovery Nurse in my current job for 20 years... l have never ever experienced my area of work closing to operations, simply because we have too many Flu patient's.

We were an over spill of Critical Care as the hospital was swamped.

I don't agree with everything that the Government has done BUT the fact that the NHS was overwhelmed shows that this was far worse then the Flu.

GladAllOver · 27/03/2021 11:48

I know someone like this. She has been banned from a Facebook group because she wouldn't stop posting that crap. And now I've had to stop replying to her messages. You just can't discuss sensibly with such people.

JackieTheFart · 27/03/2021 11:49

I honestly don’t know what to suggest. This is the sort of thing that I would struggle to get over - it’s in the realms of flat earthers and holocaust deniers IMO, and I can have no respect for those positions.

Yes, there is a 'sort of' answer for everything. It is factual we didn;t lock down for SARS. For obvious reasons!

If people are not rational they can not be reasoned with.

dontsaveusername · 27/03/2021 11:50

He's a moron. Don't engage with him

AdoraBell · 27/03/2021 11:50

OP for now I would just smile and nod but still have the vaccine and tests yourself, and if he does catch ‘flu’ leave him to it.

No sympathy, no looking after him, nothing.

Long term I would make plans to get rid, sort finances etc.

Thank you for everything Four

DH says that hospitals weren’t swamped.
He says that because they prioritised Covid over everything else there were whole departments sitting around doing nothing.
F’ing hell.

I understand the theory behind some conspiracy theories but the covid ones confuse me because why would the government close everything and tank the economy solely to restrict citizen freedoms? I know disaster capitalism exists but I don’t understand the logic in losing so much money on purpose just for this end. Also the government and their friends/family are also affected by the restrictions. I just can’t make it add up.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/03/2021 11:55

I'm giving a talk next week on what it feels like to lose a parent to Covid. Shall I send him the link? People like this are so hurtful to people like me.

NotNowPlzz · 27/03/2021 11:55

He says that because they prioritised Covid over everything else there were whole departments sitting around doing nothing.

This is true of some areas.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 27/03/2021 11:56

I've had both my jabs and I'm just fine.

OutOfLine · 27/03/2021 11:56

Sparklesocks

The ‘logic’ is explained coherently.
He has an answer for everything but will dismiss counter arguments.

I'm relatively laid back about Covid but isn't he gonna feel a bit silly -when-- if he catches it?
