AIBU to think women should not be banned from Social media for asking the question

999 replies

Angryresister · 27/01/2021 09:13

Many women have been suspended from sm for asking the question:
“Do you believe that male sexed people should be allowed access to changing rooms and showers for female sexed people and teenagers?”
Seems like a perfectly reasonable question which we should be allowed to ask

@Smileyaxolotl1 - nope I don't. I wasn't referencing your post :) But I was hoping that if Fembot123 had piqued interest in the things being discussed then the FWR board is a good place to look. I suspect that sometimes women are put off by the "feminist" tag and shouldn't be.

Thewithesarehere · 27/01/2021 18:56

@littlbrowndog

It’s dehumanising for women and girls to be called by parts of their bodies like they are not really human

Menstruators, birth person, bleeder, cervix owner

🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I tried a few male versions of these on DH. He thought it sounded unhinged. Grin

Joodyblue
I asked you more because you have obviously been a regular on those boards so know what would be classed as transphobic.

I am more familiar with Twitter really.

Definitely 😁

@Angryresister

Well, I have been out most of the day and missed the thread being moved and moved back. But I am concerned that this was done for any reason. Why was my OP so terrible for the AIBU board? Why is the poll gone? Because it showed last time I looked that there were 90% thinking I was not being unreasonable on a thread talking about how women are silenced? I would like to see the poll back... why can’t it be done? Maybe I should try it again. Good to see so many AIBU posters engaging with the topic though. Thank you for your support.
Time was when that percentage would have been very different. It's quite clear from this thread that not everyone realises the implications of the issue.

It's also very clear that when women start to understand what is at stake, they know enough about their own, personal lived experience, to give it a bit of ear room.

Personally, that's all I ask.

Ever wonder if there is search term attached that that name? It certainly results in a pretty quick delete.

...... almost as if there was something particularly significant about that person who is in a prominent position with Stonewall. Including discussing gender and being a lesbian at schools. I am not sure it is not presenting to students or just advising schools.

Either way, as I said, they are known to be 'broadening the term woman' using very clear stereotypes. Honestly, when I heard them on a video talking about fixing their car and then doing something very womanly after .... I had a great laugh. I must have been a pioneer then 35 years ago. Except I know that women have been fixing cars for generations before me.

Talk about someone being completely deluded in what a woman means!!!!!

ifIwerenotanandroid · 27/01/2021 19:02

@DickKerrLadies

Prisons and hospital wards are already single gender rather than single-sex.

And given that nobody can define gender or gender identity, it seems a bit odd to me.

They can't be single gender because current theory says there are loads of genders: only this week I've seen 'authorities' on the issue state that there are variously 100 genders & an infinite number of genders.

So where do people with those genders go? How can they be on wards which are for men or women? Isn't having just two classes of wards awfully binary? Shock

Pretty soon everyone's going to be in the women's facilities! Where do the trans men go? Will they still be heading for the ladies because they don't feel safe in the men's? Room for everyone except the people who should actually be there!

Quaagars · 27/01/2021 19:11

Or maybe it's just a normal, every day MN user and someone completely fed up with transphobia on here?
"There's no transphobia on here!" "Report if you see any!"
Things get reported and it's suddenly turned into a Conspiracy Theory.

If anyone is concerned at this please consider completing this consultation on Freedom of Expression. Deadline is 31 January. No lengthy documents to wade through and you can say as much or as little as you like about the issues you believe are important.

Forgot to add MN let a lot stand even if reported, so if it's gone they must have been in agreement.

Thewithesarehere · 27/01/2021 19:12

Ah so Mumsnet removed this thread from AIBU because it was about 88% YANBU before they moved it. Grin
Did anyone manage to take a picture? Please share. Smile

This is one of the reasons I dont think jts as "kind" as is being made out.

Alot of youngsters in schools are transitioning. Most if which are female. Theres a school in Brighton that has 75 trans students.

Now bear in mind these young teenagers who may have only just started their journey are being immediately affirmed by staff at the school.

I dont see how affirming young female students and telling them they are boys and encouraging them to use the facilities of their gender identity, well that's putting young females in with boys. Now they are perhaps safe amongst their class mates/friends although it's removing the privacy and dignity fir the boys which is not right at all. But in the outside world, at the train station or the shopping centre, using the mens facility is putting them at great risk. How is it kind to encourage anyone to put themselves in harms way like that. How does it benefit female children who will not have had the access to any medication, who will not blend in unnoticed?

It puts them in danger. How is it kind?

ListeningQuietly

People were lied to about men competing as women previously. That cat is out of the bag now, and yes; they will go down in history as cheats.

Impatiens · 27/01/2021 19:13

Or maybe it's just a normal, every day MN user and someone completely fed up with transphobia on here

I haven't seen any transphobia on this thread.

teawamutu · 27/01/2021 19:14

@ListeningQuietly

Interestingly a lot of the TRAs think that the Tokyo Olympics will be their opportunity to shine.

I suspect that any country who allows Trans competitors
will cause a mass peak
and go down in history the same way East Germany did
AS CHEATS

I feel dreadful, on a personal level, for any women who train for years only to lose a team spot or podium place to a bio male.

Part of me thinks, in bigger picture terms, that we need to say ok, bring it on. Let's see the sunlight.

Quaagars · 27/01/2021 19:16

I haven't seen any transphobia on this thread

OK

PurpleHoodie · 27/01/2021 19:17

I think a lot of people feel that way tea.

lifeturnsonadime · 27/01/2021 19:17

@Quaagars

OK

Quaagars what transphobia have you seen?

It really bothers me that standing up for women's rights is somehow seen as inherently transphobic.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 27/01/2021 19:18

Interesting, itsraininghowlovely

Has anyone done a study of which genders use which facilities? I get the impression that a few transmen who really pass, use the gents & everyone else (TM, TW, NB) uses the Ladies, or wants to. Is this accurate?

Where do the minority genders go? Do all the faery (?) ones use the gents or the ladies, or is it up to the individual? If facilities really become gender-based but are limited to two types, how will anyone who is a different gender know where to go?

Also, has anyone done a breakdown of which sex goes with each gender, or if it's evenly split? e.g. are there more male than female NB's?This area is ripe for research. Is anyone doing it & if not, where can I apply for a grant? Grin

JoodyBlue · 27/01/2021 19:23

@Smileyaxolotl1 got ya :) There are a set of guidelines on discussing this topic on the Feminist Chat board pinned to the top. So I think if people keep within them then posts are not deleted. I have seen posts that were really interesting and thought I would return to later to read at leisure and then found that they disappeared without a trace. I think it does ensure that the women on Mumsnet frame discussion very carefully for fear of deletion.

RedDogsBeg · 27/01/2021 19:25

How is it transphobic to show a picture of someone who is in an influential position and who has had access to schools and states they are widening the bandwith of what a woman is?

As the mother of a daughter I am so, so distressed at the thought of teenage girls having their breasts cut off. It makes me feel physically ill. I am sure that the cause of this is closely related to the experience of low level abuse and sexual assault experienced by girls from the moment puberty kicks in. It happened to me, my friends, my sisters, my daughter.
The fact that this, and puberty blockers, is being taught and pushed in schools is just horrifying. It should be discussed here, not hidden or censored. Nobody should be accused of transphobia for being concerned about this.
