To want to go to Markies for picky bits

736 replies

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

My mum always called it ‘Marks and Sparks’. Never heard it called ‘Markies’ before, but I knew what you meant OP.

MrsMando · 09/01/2021 14:39

PICKY BITS AngryAngryAngry🤮🤮🤮

Everleigh2021 · 09/01/2021 14:40

@MajorMujer

S/E centric mocking of a posters vocabulary. Nice Hmm
it might be S/E vocabulary? i don't know which region its from
HerMammy · 09/01/2021 14:40

There’s lots of M&S garages now with a good food selection. Some OTT responses here, we don’t all need to live in misery.

hopeishere · 09/01/2021 14:40

Surely it's Mark-sees not Markies!

MrsJBaptiste · 09/01/2021 14:40

@DimidDavilby

Leaving aside your gross vocabulary that is obviously not essential travel. Selfish and irresponsible.
Really? Fucking hell, that's the shittiest post I've seen here today.

Go to M&S OP we pop up every other day for the odd thing as it's on our way home from a walk after work. They do the best picky bits, the best for a Saturday night carpet picnic 😀

TJ17 · 09/01/2021 14:40

Wow people are mean!!

Do you feel good being so angry and rude to strangers on the internet? Take a step back and look at yourselves. You don't seem like nice people!

Hey OP just go to Markies and get the food. It's not like you're throwing a rave for 10,000! Wear a mask, sanitise your hands and don't hang around too long.

Mental health counts for a lot too right now SmileThanksWineCake

@SchrodingersImmigrant

Surely maccies is a slang for McDonald's Confused

Sinful8 · 09/01/2021 14:40

@Agirlnamedsam

What’s wrong with saying Markies?! It must be a regional thing as I’ve heard loads of people refer to it as Markies
Just marks round here. But no go for it M&S food is ace and the shop needs a bit of support right now.

If we don't use them we'll lose them.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 09/01/2021 14:41

Go for it OP! You know what they say. Live. Laugh. Love.

No seriously, is this a wind up?

Glitterblue · 09/01/2021 14:41

Everyone I know (south east Scotland) says Markies, and my SIL from further up the coast also says it.

YANBU, you still need to eat, as long as you wear a mask and observe the 2m distance it'll be fine.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 09/01/2021 14:41

This thread is more about light hearted piss taking than vitriol, keep your hair on, those throwing cunts and arseholes around.

LaMarschallin · 09/01/2021 14:41

I voted YABU because I thought you were starting a jokey thread and would be expecting it - sorry.
Was looking forwards to updates like:

"I love their moist gateaux"

and

"Shame you can't still buy clothes there - Markies' panties have the comfiest gussets"

etc

Quite disappointed.

HerMammy · 09/01/2021 14:42

Oh and the utter snottiness of using 🤮 for picky bits is pathetic and verging on bullying, it’s a common phrase but maybe those of you who make a £3 chicken last 7 meals never have a treat.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 09/01/2021 14:42

Yes it is. Sorry. Should have said.

RickiTarr · 09/01/2021 14:42

Mask up, go get your ‘picky bits’, OP, and in future don’t ask strangers on the internet for permission to do things.

Yep, just don’t call them that! Grin

yankeedoodledandee · 09/01/2021 14:42

People are quite nasty, aren't they?

My nanna has called M&S Markies since I can remember and I'm in my 40s.

Anyway, who cares. OP is talking about going to a shop for some extra/top up shopping - why has that upset so many people to the point t of bringing their claws out Hmm

FirewomanSam · 09/01/2021 14:42

Imagine caring so much about how a total stranger refers to their meals or the nickname they use for a large national retailer.

God this place is fucking ridiculous isn’t it.

TJ17 · 09/01/2021 14:42

Ps - love picky bits 🥰

Screw the haters who are being so vile over terminology. It's them that must live a really lonely and miserable existence to find themselves so unhappy over that!

Meepmeeep · 09/01/2021 14:43

It is 100% Markies in Aberdeen and the North East of Scotland. I can’t believe just how fucking nasty some of you snooty cows are being regarding a regional name for a store.
Back to the thread, if you want to go, just go. It’s more essential than the likes of going to B&M or Homebargains where I’ve seen people get much less of a hard time for wanting to shop at.

BiddyPop · 09/01/2021 14:43

Dh and dd went to M&S this morning for our house and my DAunt locally. There was food on the shelves but some empty space and an awful lack of options (where normally there might be 15 different types of veg in a fridge, it was full of just potatoes, for example, or 6 bottles of fizzy drink lined up across the front of a fridge shelf to make it look full).

No bread at all. Very short dates on what was there. Almost no cooked meat. No pork pies or sausage rolls etc. Only a couple of dessert choices not 4/5 fridges full of different things. No concentrated stock in jars. No fresh pasta.

So even if you go, you may get an unpleasant surprise.

@hopeishere

Surely it's Mark-sees not Markies!
That would be logical!
worried890 · 09/01/2021 14:44

Sadly the trouble with living in Aberdeenshire in the —seventh circle of hell— rather isolated coastal town, is that it would be a thirty mile drive to Markies - and probably not allowed or acceptable ! And I’m desperate for a yumnut now ...!

Mrsbadger77 · 09/01/2021 14:44

MIL refers to M&S as Marky Sparks. Give DH the rage 😂
