To want to go to Markies for picky bits

736 replies

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit

This thread is more about light hearted piss taking than vitriol, keep your hair on, those throwing cunts and arseholes around.

I'd hate to know you in real life Confused

catnidge · 09/01/2021 14:46

An apparent side effect of the pandemic on some MN's is spiteful petty nastiness. I hope not to run into any of them when they end lockdown. They should stay at home for ever to protect us all from their sneering.Hmm

OP, I understand what you mean and how you feel. You've really got to weigh up the risk. I haven't been to M&S as I can't get a full weekly shop there. So, I've decided for now, it's not worth the risk to myself or others.
I do hanker after certain M&S food and let's face it, some people have to shop there or it's going to be another store going under.

catlady3 · 09/01/2021 14:46

I wouldn't go if I were you, not for worry about the rules but because I'd be worried about catching COVID. New variant is spreading viciously. It's not about "sticking to the rules" , it's about keeping yourself and yours safe at this point. Seriously, if it's avoidable, don't do it.

YoniAndGuy · 09/01/2021 14:46

It's snottiness yes, but much MUCH more that it just conjures a boaksome picture of people all handling food and licking fingers and touching stuff. 'picking' at it - BLEURGH.

That's why people really have such a reaction to the phrase.

Marksies is just a bit annoying but who cares.

RickiTarr · 09/01/2021 14:46

@HerMammy

Oh and the utter snottiness of using 🤮 for picky bits is pathetic and verging on bullying, it’s a common phrase but maybe those of you who make a £3 chicken last 7 meals never have a treat.
No I don’t think it is snobbishness. I know it’s probably unreasonable but the phrase “picky bits” make me feel ill too, but I don’t want to think too hard about why.

There’s a word for it when some words or sounds provoke a disproportionate reaction. Like misphonia but not quite. Maybe it’s that? Or simply associations? Not sure.

Haffiana · 09/01/2021 14:46

'Picky bits' is the stuff in my nose.

mrslol · 09/01/2021 14:46

Ignore the hate OP. Must be an Aberdeen thing, I would always call it Markies. And to answer your question, yes go and get some treats.

PleasantVille · 09/01/2021 14:46

@ConfusedcomMum

The thread title made my teeth itch.
Me too Grin

But that aside have we really got to the stage where grown adults can't decide if they can to a shop/take away (I dont know if you mean Marks and Spencer or MacDonalds), if it's MacDonalds I did read that you can only go in a car now

The phrase ‘picky bits’ (which I have only ever seen on MN) always makes me think of sunburned skin flaking off someone’s back.

mrslol · 09/01/2021 14:47

Or should I say go and get some fancy pieces.

AldiAisleofCrap · 09/01/2021 14:47

@Agirlnamedsam

1325 deaths yesterday but as you are fed up then obviously your “picky bits” take priority!

User5437 · 09/01/2021 14:48

Why would you ask on here, if I wanted something from a shop I would just get it, it wouldn't enter my head to post on here so YABU to post this

Iwantacookie · 09/01/2021 14:49

Do it op I've just been to get some posh cheese from the supermarket because I wanted it.

My poshest (I know, just my opinion) and richest (pretty sure that's true) friend calls it Marks and Expensive.

I'm more a "Marks" or "M 'n' S" person.

Never heard of "picky bits" before MN.
DDs used to call all the bits and pieces put out for supper on Christmas Day a "smorgasbord".

YouBoughtMeAWall · 09/01/2021 14:51

Realistically you’re just bored and fancy a trip to the shops. No you shouldn’t do that.

FirewomanSam · 09/01/2021 14:51

OP hasn’t been to to a shop since the beginning of December! How many of you laying into her can say the same?!

lockedownloretta · 09/01/2021 14:51

I say MarkSies
Go get your picky bits
I would

atticuslovesscout · 09/01/2021 14:51

Markies in Dundee also. Really don't understand the bitchfest

LakieLady · 09/01/2021 14:51

I'm in Sussex and we call "nibbles" picky bits. I hate "nibbles" - it sounds pretentious imo.

Markies though, are those marrowbone roll dog biscuits, so calling M&S/Marks "Markies" is just wrong!

Cooltalkin · 09/01/2021 14:52

Ignore the haters
It is always marksies where I am ( or eve marks )
If you need to buy food then go . It’s food . It doesn’t have to be lentils and milk to allow you to attend a supermarket in person
Obviously it’s not a daily visit so yes I think it’s fine
If u couldn’t get a delivery you would have to go in person so it’s the same thing

ToHellinahandbasket · 09/01/2021 14:53

This thread could not be more mumsnet if it tried. Lots of posters being deliberately obtuse, taking offence at the harmless language OP has used and not even answering her question.

On the requisite “makes my teeth itch”.

Haven’t read the full read so haven’t seen if “give your head a wobble” has cropped up as well.

It’s not essential OP, especially if you have food in the house, but it is food shopping so technically you could go. I wouldn’t personally.
