To want to go to Markies for picky bits

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:15

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

@Iom92

We call it Marksies where I’m from. I’ve also heard it called Marks and Sparks. My MIL is in the midlands and calls it Marks’. I’ve never, ever heard anyone actually refer to it as Marks and Spencer’s!
It's MarkSies here too. But pronounced more Mark-siz so I guess this would be Marks'

Now you know you should have posted:

'AIBU to arrange a visit to Messrs Marks & Spencer's establishment of fine foods and goods in order to purchase a variety of foodstuffs? One has the inclination for a cornucopia of delights and sweet meats for ones's evening sustenance'

Theunamedcat · 09/01/2021 14:29

We call it magic and sparkle over here Blush

No one in my area is even pretending to follow the rules anymore my daughter is distraught she might not be allowed to return to university she cannot access the 14 books she needs which are sitting on a shelf in her accommodation which she is paying for and people are shopping three adults from one household plus children in a pandemic

I dont begrudge your picky bits just do everyone a favour shop alone please?

chaosisaladder · 09/01/2021 14:29

It’s Marks and Spencer for us. We are poor so have to be specific when we talk about going there as it doesn’t happen often Grin

I would go if you don’t go out often. There’s your exercise, picking your... picky bits

Patchworkthedog · 09/01/2021 14:29

I am howling. I've heard (and shuddered at) picky bits but never Markies!

Dogscanteatonions · 09/01/2021 14:30

@MysweetAudrina

Could be worse I overheard my dh finishing up a work call with the words okey doodles.
Did your vajayjay dry up instantly? 🤣🤣🤣
Somebodyotherthanme · 09/01/2021 14:30

What's Tommy K?

LIZS · 09/01/2021 14:30

Essential, really? You can get M and S via Just Eat in some areas.

Patchworkthedog · 09/01/2021 14:30

Iklboo omggg

Lookslikerainted · 09/01/2021 14:31

I’ve heard Marks and Sparks, but not sure of Markies. I’m having a vague memory from the 90s. Actually I think I’ve heard people say Marksy.

Either way YaNBU going for a food shops is fine.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 09/01/2021 14:31

Arr! I think get some picky bits and cheer yourself up. This thread is already frothing so maybe don't check back.

JeezyPeeps · 09/01/2021 14:31

Wow, arseholes out in force today I see!

Yanbu op. Go, shop at Markies.

GinAndTonicOnIt · 09/01/2021 14:31

Don't take it personally OP. People in here are angry as fuck these days. You're allowed to buy food. (Stick in a pack of tampons or something in the basket just incase of crazed policemen trying to arrest you for arranging a picnic. Or mumsnetters with pitch forks and torches screaming about the evils of picky bits causing Armageddon)

LaceyBetty · 09/01/2021 14:31

Terminology aside, of course you can go.

Patchworkthedog · 09/01/2021 14:31

Picky bits just makes me think of acne.

Persianparadise · 09/01/2021 14:32

You’ll be going on your holidaybobs soon too. 🤢🤢

Patchworkthedog · 09/01/2021 14:32

TramaDollface · 09/01/2021 14:33

It’s always markies in Aberdeen and surroundings

Carishina · 09/01/2021 14:34

I know what you mean OP. I’ve had to resist the urge a few times to go to the shops to get some luxury things. I think unless you actually need to go and do a food shop it’s best avoided.

When I did go to M&S before Christmas I found the whole experience extremely stressful and I didn’t feel I could browse and choose things as I normally would because it was impossible to avoid people. If you can, it would probably be better just to order some nice food for delivery or maybe use what you have to make some tasty picnicky things. Sorry to be the voice of doom and gloom!

kleew1 · 09/01/2021 14:34

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit when I frequent the Markies in Glasgow all I hear is people talking about pickie bits... West End tho innit.

worried890 · 09/01/2021 14:34

It’s always markies in Aberdeen and surroundings
Thank you !!!

I thought I was going mad !

Everleigh2021 · 09/01/2021 14:35

@cantsleepwontsleep1

Jeez there are some horrid people on here todayConfused

Of course you can go, it will be good for your mental health too, having a bit of normality like going to the shop, especially as you haven't been for over a month. As long as you wear a mask you're fine.

its not essential though.....why add to the problem for the store staff who have literally hundreds of people a day encroach on them?? why?

nobody gives a toss about retail staff
