To want to go to Markies for picky bits

I’ve not been in a shop since the beginning of December. Been wfh and only been out to go to the park with DS or go for a walk.

We have been using Tesco click and collect, but I want to go to Markies and get some picky bits / afternoon tea for lunch tomorrow.

DH thinks I’m being a bit silly as it’s not necessary travel: and that we should be avoiding shops. He’s happy for us to get something delivered or to collect something. But I’m just a bit fed up and want to go and select some nice bits and pieces.

I have no problem with ‘markies’, or ‘picky bits’ - you should go, pick them and enjoy them!

TwirlingTwizzler · 09/01/2021 14:23

@Lou98

Don't really understand the confusion, pretty obvious what the OP meant.

I'd say go for it OP, it's food you're going for and that's allowed, enjoy!

It really isn't obvious Confused

@kleew1. Yes, I am.

Ok, I get the wrath about possibly spreading the disease, and possibly about saying “picky bits” (I couldn’t decide if nibbles or picky bits is worse): but what’s the deal with the outrage about saying Markies?

The thread title made my teeth itch.

dudsville · 09/01/2021 14:23

Live, Laugh Love OP!

Somebodyotherthanme · 09/01/2021 14:24

Okey doodles made me laugh Grin

WankPuffins · 09/01/2021 14:24

Marks and sparks is far worse.

Agirlnamedsam · 09/01/2021 14:25

And for clarity I have no live laugh love or dance like no ones watching signs in my house: you bunch of vipers

I'm confused by the outrage here. You're allowed to pick up a drive through costa, how is this different

WankPuffins · 09/01/2021 14:25

Nibbles makes me think of sweaty pretzels at a swingers party.

Picky bits better.

kleew1 · 09/01/2021 14:26

Ha same. And there's nothing wrong with markies or picky bits. ENJOY BEING UNREASONABLY SELFISH GOING TO THE SHOPS FOR FOOD - post a pic to enrage people more pls of your picky bits.

NuniaBeeswax · 09/01/2021 14:26

"Are you Scottish OP?"

I refuse to believe that I share a country with anyone who says shudder picky bits.

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/01/2021 14:26

@MysweetAudrina

Could be worse I overheard my dh finishing up a work call with the words okey doodles.
LTB immediately.
FortunesFave · 09/01/2021 14:26

I'm sorry OP. I think "Picky bits" might have gone unnoticed but for it being paired with "Markies" and vice versa.

It's the PAIRING of them that's caused the outrage. Grin

We call it Marksies where I’m from. I’ve also heard it called Marks and Sparks. My MIL is in the midlands and calls it Marks’. I’ve never, ever heard anyone actually refer to it as Marks and Spencer’s!

popNlock · 09/01/2021 14:28

Marks and sparks is far worse
🤣🤣 no,its the best.

Milkshake7489 · 09/01/2021 14:28

So much snobbery on one thread. I don't care whether you go or not, but 'picky bits' and 'Markies' are normal where I live too...

Ignore the competitive speech police OP, there's nothing more cringe worthy than people who look down on others for how they talk anyway.

Littlepond · 09/01/2021 14:28

You won’t get any proper replies as this is Mumsnet and everyone will focus on you calling it Markies and picky bits 🙄

I think it’s fine to pop to the shop to grab some treat food as long as you are masked / sanitising / staying away from people etc.

Enjoy your Markies’ picky bits 😁

FortunesFave · 09/01/2021 14:28

I'm trying to work out why I hate it...I think it sounds infantile. Say it in a baby voice and you'll see...

"I wanna go MARKIES for PICKY BIIIITS!"

cantsleepwontsleep1 · 09/01/2021 14:29

Jeez there are some horrid people on here todayConfused

Of course you can go, it will be good for your mental health too, having a bit of normality like going to the shop, especially as you haven't been for over a month. As long as you wear a mask you're fine.

CriticalWoman · 09/01/2021 14:29

Such words belong with Maccy D's and Tommy K (shudder)

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 09/01/2021 14:29

Where in Scotland would you suggest Nunia because no self respecting Glaswegian I know would use the term either Wink
