Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

what a dick

Poppyolive90 · 28/12/2020 00:29

Maybe she identifies as Spanish Hmm

Ballstothis148 · 28/12/2020 00:32

It is so weird! I even remember her accent, pretty thick Spanish accent... but she’s born and bred Boston?! With no Spanish links?

Like Gwyneth Paltrow speaks Spanish I think, but doesn’t walk around calling herself Hilaria and putting on an accent and talking about the difficulty of being Spanish in America... so baffled! Just the story I needed to end this weird year

YANBU, that's very weird. Then again she always seemed like a massive attention seeker so not mega surprised!

HeIsAVeryBadBoy · 28/12/2020 00:35

Yeah I just read that. How odd! Her surname was Thomas or something. Apparently there's a clip of her struggling to remember the English word for cucumber.

It's bizarro. Who knew I'd end 2020 thinking about this. 2020, what a ride.

Summerdayshaze · 28/12/2020 00:36

If she’s always felt like she’s Spanish, then who are we to say she isn’t? What harm is she doing?

OfaFrenchmind2 · 28/12/2020 00:38

OMG, I know right? Like, what was she thinking? I will never trust anybody again, this is the last straw for 2020!!

My mother thinks she’s Italian. She isn’t. She’s from Liverpool and has only been to Italy on holiday. But now she will only wear Italian clothes, she will only eat Italian food (from and Italian cookbook ostentatiously left open) and speaks Italian to us. I haven’t the faintest idea what she’s in about. I’ve only been to Italy on a school skiing trip and that was many years ago. We don’t even have any Italian connections or ancestry.

Pretentious, much?

Ballstothis148 · 28/12/2020 00:51

Lol my “French” friend said she found it hard to get rid of the accent after “so long in France” (aka six months, and she didn’t speak French). Some people! I can’t believe I’m holding Gwyneth Paltrow up as an example of decency.... but she loves Spain and is respectful about it. Same with that actor from The Hangover who speaks fluent French. This is just so 2020!!

This is my overriding feeling too. She's just a person, living her life. We blink in, we blink out. It's a short thing so who cares.

But there's another part of me that's like Wtf?! Like, what do her white Bostonian parents think about her broken English, lies about where she was born/raised, naming all of her kids with Spanish names, etc...

jillypill · 28/12/2020 00:57

Just read up on it, was she born in Spain then?

Mrstwiddle · 28/12/2020 01:01

That’s so bizarre...

jillypill · 28/12/2020 01:01

'Let's be very clear that Europe has a lot of white people in there

Do Americans not know this? I don't get why she said it.

HermioneKipper · 28/12/2020 01:04

It’s unbelievably bizarre and I’m hooked to reading Twitter about it. Insane and hilarious 🤣

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 28/12/2020 01:05

She sounds either mentally ill or a con artist, I really don't see why she couldn't love all things Spanish without lying that she is Spanish. It's bizarre.

Exactly, you are literally killing her with your judgement
HeIsAVeryBadBoy · 28/12/2020 01:08

No, not born in Spain. In Boston, to Anglo parents, by the sounds of things.

Summerdayshaze · 28/12/2020 01:09

She’s a Spanish person born in the wrong country. Imagine how awful that must feel. I think she’s being very brave. Especially after she got deadnamed.

Poppyolive90 · 28/12/2020 01:11

She is stunning and brave.

jillypill · 28/12/2020 01:14

No, not born in Spain

Right, I couldn't tell if that was true or not b

TheVamoosh · 28/12/2020 01:14

Seems like she grew up in Spain and speaks Spanish to her brother, as per their text conversation. Maybe she played up the angle a bit but it's not exactly a lie, even though she's not "ethnically" Spanish. Having two versions of your name is not that weird either, most Greek people use Greek/English versions of their name depending on context. (E.g. Giorgos/George.)

My child is not "ethnically" British but she's lived here all her life (although she was born here, in her case.) She speaks my mother tongue with a slight British accent. If we move to my country when she gets older, she might still do that. She considers herself to be British. I can sort of see how this could come about.

What does being born in Spain or having Spanish relatives have to do with being Spanish?
