Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

Arguably if you can self-identify as a different gender you can self-identify as anything.

TheVamoosh · 28/12/2020 01:17

(I say my daughter considers herself to be British and of course this is true, because she was born here, but I'm pretty sure she would feel the same if we had moved here when she was small.)

FortunesFave · 28/12/2020 01:17

Fucking weird. I watched her video where she addresses it and her accent is suddenly very American.

I trained with some Spanish women...and their accents were very, very strong. Not something to slip in and out of.

Blacktothepink · 28/12/2020 01:19

Hillaria you are hilarious 😂
Reminds me of the film Muriels wedding when she insisted on being called Mariel 😂
She comes across as a narcissistic fantasist.

Kalula · 28/12/2020 01:19

Yes, very bizarre. But maybe she is just self-IDing as a transracial woman. Just saying.

I'll see myself out. Blush

MichelleScarn · 28/12/2020 01:19

The Spanish should learn from her how to be properly Spanish of course.

BlackCatShadow · 28/12/2020 01:19

She says that she was born in Boston but grew up in both the US and Spain. She goes by Hilaria in Spain and Hilary in the US, but became Hilaria full time as she felt the name suited her more.

I don’t think it’s that weird. It kind of reminds me of the Andrew/Andrea character in Grey’s Anatomy who has Italian and US heritage so is bi-cultural.

My kids are also bi-cultural, so I understand how hard it can be to bridge the two identifies.

TheVamoosh · 28/12/2020 01:20

Not something to slip in and out of.

Bilingual people with two mother tongues quote often have different accents depending on circumstances though. If I speak English to my family (so DH can understand) I don't have the same accent as when I'm at work, for instance.

Summerdayshaze · 28/12/2020 01:20

Well no, not everyone can just slip into Spanish accents. But Hilaria isn’t just anyone. She was meant to be born Spanish. I think that should be obvious and respected.

TheDivineMsRusso · 28/12/2020 01:20

So wait, does Alec Baldwin know? Shock

When they're in bed together is she like: [American accent] Ahh, darling, at last, I can relax and be myself.

Or does she keep it up the accent like, !Ay papi, dame la penga!

Sidenote: I bet Kim Basinger's laughing her ass off.

Northofsomewhere · 28/12/2020 01:22

This is the first I've heard of it, but I think what pushes this past the point of 'no harm' is that she was claiming that being Spanish (which she's not) has negatively affected her in the US. It's different if she's just embracing Spanish culture including food and language but to pretend to be Spanish is different.
It reminds me a little of Rachael Dolezal, a white woman who pretended to be an African American woman going as far as changing her appearance to convince people. She also became an activist and spoke on experiences that as a white woman she had never experienced and reached a prominent role in the NAACP.
I don't see how what Rachael Dolezal did and what Hilaria Baldwin is doing is that different. They're using another culture/race (even though one is European, does that make it more acceptable?) To claim hardship as well as to fool other people. She might very well really appreciate and understand Spanish culture or an Americanised version of it but she will never be Spanish.

jillypill · 28/12/2020 01:23

What does being born in Spain or having Spanish relatives have to do with being Spanish?

I was born in England but my parents are immigrants & all family lives in their home country. Culturally I very much identify with that country. However as a child/teen I spent a fair bit of time in France, can speak the language but I would never consider myself French.

Zug2 · 28/12/2020 01:24

So bizarre.

I didn’t follow it, assuming she grew up as an expat kid, which makes it understandable that she may associate with a culture where she spent her formative years, I thought the media were nit picking it.

I just read about it now, and that’s not the case at all, she has blatantly lied, said her mother was Spanish, when she is American, said she moved to US Age 19 for college.

I agree she is either mentally ill, or a con artist. Quite sad really.

FortunesFave · 28/12/2020 01:28

TheVamoosh Spanish is quite distinctive though. It's VERY difficult to drop that accent if you're brought up as a Spaniard, speaking Spanish.

It's why actors like Penelope Cruz still have strong accents.

Poppyolive90 · 28/12/2020 01:30

Watch this video...

She claims to have moved to the US at 19 to go to NYU, but in reality she grew up in Boston. There are lots of examples of this across the web. Her parents are both multi generation Bostonians.

MichelleScarn · 28/12/2020 01:30

she will never be Spanish actual violence here. How can you say that! If she feels she is Spanish and lives a Spanish life she is Spanish

greengrassapreciationsociety · 28/12/2020 01:32

I mean this is out there and no accent- totally US accent so I am not sure why this is coming out now.

Poppyolive90 · 28/12/2020 01:33

Also from a quick google:

“Baldwin’s family — at least her parents, Dr. Kathryn Hayward and David Thomas — do live in Mallorca, and per Page Six, have since 2011. But before that, they appeared to have lived in Massachusetts.”

So her parents, Kathryn and David, had a daughter they named Hillary Hayward-Thomas who was born and grew up in Boston.

Anyway, I should stop deadculturing her. If she says she is spanish, she is Spanish and we should all praise her for being true to who she really is. Wink

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 28/12/2020 01:37

So true about the accent not fading...my mum lived in England for about 50 years and if anything her accent got stronger 😂
Incredible vocabulary and grammar though.

Kljnmw3459 · 28/12/2020 01:37

I follow her on Instagram, she does nice little easy quick exercise videos. I heard about the whole thing about Spanish, it makes no difference to me.

BeanieB2020 · 28/12/2020 01:37

I thought half her family lived in Spain?

Idk why the accent is a big issue. People pick up accents sometimes. One of my friends says she's from a country she's not actually from because although she was born there and her parents were from there, she was raised in another country and has never been to the country she's really from since she was a few weeks old and has no memories of it.

jillypill · 28/12/2020 01:38

What was her motive I wonder? A USP? I thought that was popping out as many babies as possible in the shortest time frame whilst doing headstands.

MrsGulDukat · 28/12/2020 01:40

I've always felt like I'm a millionaire born in a low income earning body. I feel that my feelings should be respected and I should be treated as such.

I also feel like a thin woman in a fat woman's body. From now on, I'm a size because that's how I feel.

bluetongue · 28/12/2020 01:42

So apparently she is saying ‘yes I’m a white girl’. Is Spanish not white?

I used to wish I had a more exotic background growing up. My ethnicity is white / Anglo but I could pass for Greek or Eastern European. I never actually pretended to be from another culture even though I probably could have.

RUOKHon · 28/12/2020 01:44

This whole story is so WTF.

Does Alec know? How is this only coming to light now? So many questions!
