Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

AMERICAN SPANIARDS ARE SPANIARDS

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 07:36

If you're cis-originned what is your problem? Huh?

PolloDePrimavera · 28/12/2020 07:36

This has cheered me up after a shitty day with DM... When I was about 14, I wanted to spell my name in the Scandinavian way to make me seem more interesting. I didn't actually do it (turns out I'm not a total nob) and please note this was in 1990, way before Scandi chic so I was something of an early adopter Grin.

PurplePansy05 · 28/12/2020 07:41

Those of you who say you can't hear her accent, are you serious? She has been putting on a Spanish accent in adulthood, her school friends from Massachusets confirmed she never spoke with a foreign accent in childhood. She has never lived in Spain, both her parents are (several-generation) American. She has no Spanish descent. I've now watched her YT videos and she's clearly going for the Spanish look as well. It is disturbing.

TheVanguardSix · 28/12/2020 07:45

Maybe she identifies as Spanish

How very Descartes of her!
I think (I'm Spanish) therefore I am (Spanish)... except she's not.

I identify as Russian. Behind this Irish-Jewish, menopausal, collapsing face and body melting faster than candle wax, I'm 100% Irina Shayk.

Kokeshi123 · 28/12/2020 07:46

I think the key to understanding this is that in the US, Spanish is thought of as being "not-white" because of the whole Latin America thing. So it's a way for a white person to attain a kind of Noble Yet Oppressed Person Of Colour status.

All very silly.

ElizaLaLa · 28/12/2020 07:50

If she’s always felt like she’s Spanish, then who are we to say she isn’t? What harm is she doing?

If she wasn't born in Spain, brought up in Spain, or even as spanish speaking, has no spanish blood, then she isn't spanish.

turnitonagain · 28/12/2020 07:52

This is absolutely hilarious. Her parents retired to Mallorca when she was in her late 20s. I remember the gossip when she and Alec got together, it was all about this exotic young fitness instructor. She definitely did it to seem interesting and then decided it was working for her somehow.

Naming the kids Eduardo, Carmen etc is too much Grin

Guineapig99 · 28/12/2020 07:52

Did you actually read what she’s said? She’s not claiming to be ethically Spanish, is bilingual, born in USA but grew up between Spain and USA ( mostly Spain it sounds like) and moved back to the USA at 19.
The accent thing sounds odd as she probably doesn’t need to speak English with. Spanish accent.
Hilaria is the Spanish version of her name and what her family call her as they all live in Spain permanently so she’s known by that.
I don’t actually think it’s that big a deal.

JacobReesMogadishu · 28/12/2020 07:52

She’s even given all her kids Spanish names.

Surely her parents and siblings have been thinking “wtf” for years!

I bet Ireland Baldwin is also laughing her socks off, I get the impression there’s no love lost between them. Didn’t Alec hit Ireland? Or was that all made up as well?

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 07:53

You'd think, but apparently that doesn't work for sex. Which I'd argue is a hell of a lot more binary than country of origin.
TidyDancer · 28/12/2020 07:53

This is hysterical.

I remember her being really funny about how people should pronounce Hilaria, she even had it on her social media bio for a while.

I agree with the poster who compared her to Rachel Dolezal.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 07:54

Finally snapping and spelling it out for the people who aren't getting it.

SnowyOwlWan · 28/12/2020 07:55

It's a mad story isn't it! Especially her ''I am a white girl'' defense or .... was it a defense? Like, what does she think Spanish women are. Madness.

And, in a higher league of madness, Alec Baldwin on interviews on chat shows quotes her mimics a spanish accent Confused

AMERICAN SPANIARDS ARE SPANIARDS

SHE'S NOT EVEN AMERICAN SPANISH.
Sorry, I'll repeat that more quietly.
She's not even American Spanish.
In other words, she's not remotely Hispanic.

I'm American. We don't say American Spanish. We say Hispanic when referring to anyone who is from (or whose immediate ancestors are from) Spanish speaking countries.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 07:55

People are what they say they are. To question that is literal violence.
We've been gaslight Ed by this utter shite for YEARS. this is a fairly benign example on the whole.

She is if she says she is. She identifies that way. That is who she is.

how very Descartes of her! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

maa9144 · 28/12/2020 07:59

I live in the US. She did not grow up in Spain. Several of her classmates from the high school she attended in Boston have come out to say they went to school with her. The only question is why people waited so long to say something.

GreenlandTheMovie · 28/12/2020 08:00

She did grow up partly in Spain though, and soeaks reasonable Spanish. She moved back to the US at 19. Those are quite formative years and quite a different experience from the average American. She clearly does have Spanish cultural links because she spent part of her childhood, including her adolescence, living there.

Personally I think she's being bullied because she's a white woman and is entitled to no legal protections so there's nothing to deter people from piling in.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 08:01

Of course she's entitled to legal protection Confused

bevelino · 28/12/2020 08:02

She has managed to convince a lot of people that she is of Spanish heritage and has been caught out lying. Furthermore, her explanation of her heritage on Instagram show’s just what a complete fool she is.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 08:02

But I do agree she should be left alone and humoured as we do with other people who claim to be something they're not, when logic and reason dictates otherwise.

zzizz · 28/12/2020 08:02

@ozgirl75 love it

SnowyOwlWan · 28/12/2020 08:04

I don't believe Americans call somebody from Madrid ''Hispanic''. @TheVanguardSix
