Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

She went to high school in Boston

Zug2 · 28/12/2020 08:05

Apparently, native Spanish speakers say she does speak Spanish like a Spaniard, so she is clearly fully bilingual, Obviously she grew up in a family who loved Spain, and made sure their kids grew up bilingual, and her parents Eventually relocated to Spain a few years ago.

If you look at old videos of her, she has an American accent, although she does have a squeaky little girl voice, I haven’t seen any videos of her faking a Spanish scent while speaking English.

I still don’t understand how she can claim to be Spanish.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 08:07

Surely there are more ridiculous examples of this. Why are people bothered about this mostly harmless one?

ragged · 28/12/2020 08:07

I can't believe she didn't get outed years ago if she went to HS in Boston.

SnowyOwlWan · 28/12/2020 08:08

I think it's a bit shitty of Amy Schumer to lead the pile on.

It's one thing total strangers and non slebs trying to make sense of why HB might have done this but Amy Schumer shouldn't be publicly mocking her. Just seems a bit............... shitty.

HB was caught in a stupid lie. But if I were a celebrity I wouldn't be leading any mockery. Ykwim.

I know! are none of those people on twitter?

Maybe they knew her as the student who came to their school from spain, maybe there was some element of truth to her claims to be spanish that prevented them from saying anything.

PurplePansy05 · 28/12/2020 08:13

are none of those people on twitter?

They are. They've already said there was no Spanish link at the time.

Beefcurtains79 · 28/12/2020 08:14

I think she’d have been able to get away with the deceit by just being vague, but the interview claiming that she only moved to America at 19 from Spain appears to be a totally provable lie.

Tsubasa1 · 28/12/2020 08:18

She says she was trying to be her 'coolest self' in the past but now just wants to be honest about everything.Mmmm or just wants to be honest when she's caught out...

MsTSwift · 28/12/2020 08:23

She’s overplayed her hand rather hasn’t she?

SuperHighway · 28/12/2020 08:24

Leave Hillaria alone! If she identifies as Spanish then who are you to say she isn't? She's stunning and brave and this thread is literal violence. Yours sincerely Eddie Izzard.

NotaChocoholic · 28/12/2020 08:26

I am Polish. My DC are born here and brought up here. They speak English as their first language and their Polish is not that good (one has SN and doesn't speak of at all). They go once every 2 years for 2 weeks to Poland. They feel and identify as British even though there run no British 'blood' in their veins.

I'd she spent a lot of time in Spain as a child, I think it is less weird than some make it sound.

Zug2 · 28/12/2020 08:29

There are lots of Reddit threads from a few years ago, with posters saying they went to school with her and she is definitely not Spanish, Born and grew up in a very wealthy suburb of Boston.

I think it has only now been picked up by the general media.

TheVanguardSix · 28/12/2020 08:30

SnowyOwlWan Read my post!
I was referring to the made-up term American Spanish. Who mentioned Madrid? American Spanish = Hispanic.
I didn't invent the term.

IDontMindMarmite · 28/12/2020 08:32

I feel for her. The fall out is going to be vicious.

IDontMindMarmite · 28/12/2020 08:33

Do some Americans forget that Spain exists? Just thinking of the 'white woman' comment...

SnowyOwlWan · 28/12/2020 08:35

Madrid was an example!

I was just surprised that Americans would consider somebody from Spain ''hispanic'' but I'm not attacking you. Just checking it. You're not to blame!

But that's a completely different scenario. They were born and bred in the UK and only spend holiday in your country of origin. It's no surprise they consider themselves British. She was born and raised in the US, by your logic she is American and that's the point everyone is making. She did not spend her childhood in Spain, she was going there for holiday and her family members don't even originate from Spain, unlike your origin is actually in Poland and your children could, if they feel this way, say their heritage is Polish or Polish-British.

There is no way this woman can reasonably say she's Spanish or Spanish-American. She's been claiming it for years though.

TheVanguardSix · 28/12/2020 08:36

Do some Americans forget that Spain exists?

We barely remember that Canada is above us and Mexico is below us until someone mentions ice hockey and/or walls. You're going to have to cut us huge slack here.

SnowyOwlWan · 28/12/2020 08:37

me too. She was caught in a silly harmless lie. I think she should come off SM for a few years.
StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2020 08:39

Are there a lot of people turning a blind eye to the huge double standards here?

NotaChocoholic · 28/12/2020 08:40

She was born and raised in the US

...and in Spain

Begonias · 28/12/2020 08:41

My husband lived in Paris for a good few years and speaks French fluently yet he always says he is British. The children speak French, eldest can hold a conversation with her dad younger two not so much but they would never dream of identifying as french. We went to New York a few years back according to Hilaria maybe I'm American lol

It's so bizarre, I've always found Hilaria annoying for some strange reason more so now!

ASchuylerSister · 28/12/2020 08:46

Well I think she’s stunning and brave.

If she feels like she’s a Spanish woman born into the wrong body who are we to judge?

Let her live her truth Flowers
