Hilaria Baldwin pretended to be Spanish wtf?!

Ballstothis148 · 28/12/2020 00:24

This is the least important and most weird story of 2020.... this woman comes up on my Instagram a lot as a suggested page. Tbh I don’t find her interesting but know she’s Spanish and is into health, having babies with Alec Baldwin and that’s pretty much it. She speaks with a Spanish accent, on her IG page she calls her children “Baldwinitos” Hmm I do remember an article saying when she speaks Spanish to her kids people confuse her for a nanny so I thought an interesting take on a European mum in the States.

Except it’s all a lie. She’s not remotely Spanish. Her wealthy Boston parents (no Spanish ancestry) now have a holiday home there.

What is wrong with people?! I include me for being too interested :) why pretend to be Spanish? In one interview she even pretended she didn’t know the word for cucumber as her English isn’t that good Confused

Oh and she’s not even called Hilaria, she’s called Hilary. This year I swear... what an odd story!! I did know a girl who went very French after a romance there one year... maybe it’s a thing!

@MinecraftMother

God, so embarrassing,

Or stunning and brave... 🤔

I think it's ok because it's Spanish, she can get away with it.
pigandmonkey · 28/12/2020 04:34

My mother does this, it drives my sibling and me crazy. We grew up in an area of Canada that has a lot of French-speaking people, but she was not one of them - Scottish mother, English father. She spoke French, but never that well and culturally she was English Canadian. Went to school in English, spoke English at home, didn't socialize with French Canadians, ate roast beef and Yorkshire pudding on Sundays. My parents moved to another province after they retired and now she swears in French, uses French words in place of English words, sings French songs to my baby and makes traditional French Canadian food that we NEVER ate growing up. It's weird. We think she does it because it makes her feel special.

StopSquirtingBleachOnCaneToads · 28/12/2020 04:37

If she feels Spanish and identifies as Spanish then she is Spanish. That's how modern society seems to work 🤷‍♀️

TurquoiseDress · 28/12/2020 04:49

It all sounds rather batshit...it does make me wonder if she's got too much time on her hands but then I remember ages this baby making machine! Think she's on number 4 or 5 by now.

I'm only aware of her by reading articles about each baby being born!

RickiTarr · 28/12/2020 05:11

@1forAll74

Never heard of her, as don't go on Instagram rubbish.
She is married to a famous Hollywood actor. You don’t have to be on Instagram to have heard of her. Hmm
FunkBus · 28/12/2020 05:20

Even if she grew up mainly in Spain, she still very clearly lied/didn't tell the whole truth. There are videos of her saying she moved to the US as an adult, no mention of being born there or having American parents.

If it wasn't for things like that, I'd have some sympathy and give her the benefit of the doubt - I live abroad and you do sometimes adopt a lot of cultural aspects and identify with that culture so. I get that. I do forget the English words for stuff sometimes (as she did with the cucumber thing) but I find it unlikely she would forget basic words like that if she is living full time in the US and speaking English with her husband and so on. I get how accents can slip around but to me it really sounds like she was making a concerted effort to sound Spanish - I know a lot of bilingual people and the difference is never that marked ime. Her children have very Spanish names (Carmen and so on) which just doesn't sit right for me. And changing her name to Hilaria? That's just weird. Using it while in Spain or speaking Spanish, sure, but using it as your name but giving no mention to the fact that your name is actually Hilary? It's like she is cosplaying being Spanish.

It's also so weird that she talks about being Spanish as if it's a racial minority.

But what's weirder is that it hasn't come out until now. Like did no one from her childhood or family ever go 'um wtf, why are you pretending to be Spanish?'

I think she's probably a very fucked up person with pretty severe mental health issues. Her entire life is based on her image, she has marketed herself as this kind of super mum who does yoga and has a perfect body and blah blah but it's all bs as so much of that stuff is.

I feel sorry for her tbh.

Fuckingcrustybread · 28/12/2020 05:24

@Pinkywoo
Really? ACTUAL violence? You obviously don't know the meaning of the words
Perhaps you've never heard the phrase taking the piss.

Bejazzled · 28/12/2020 05:41

Just when I thought 2020 couldn’t get much more surreal...

I think some people need attention as much as they need oxygen. They must think very little of themselves so have to glam up their lives.

I know a woman, her brother in law and his wife live in Spain, so apparently makes her Spanish. Lol. Tenuous link to the nth degree. She drops in occasional Spanish words when speaking, has named her own children in Spanish versions of Anglo names and her grandchildren call her ‘ya ya’ (which is Greek I believe) Confused

Andylion · 28/12/2020 05:56

@RUOKHon

This whole story is so WTF.

Does Alec know? How is this only coming to light now? So many questions!

I googled this earlier and found an interview where they announce they are expecting, their first child together, I believe. He imitates her as having an accent.
CodenameVillanelle · 28/12/2020 06:09

Weird story! Especially the aspect where she's playing on the concept of being an ethnic minority (which as a white European she wouldn't be, if she were actually Spanish) that kind of gives away how American she is, that she doesn't grasp the difference between being Hispanic/Latin American and being Spanish.

14ScottsRoad · 28/12/2020 06:30

@BillLius

My mother thinks she’s Italian. She isn’t. She’s from Liverpool and has only been to Italy on holiday. But now she will only wear Italian clothes, she will only eat Italian food (from and Italian cookbook ostentatiously left open) and speaks Italian to us. I haven’t the faintest idea what she’s in about. I’ve only been to Italy on a school skiing trip and that was many years ago. We don’t even have any Italian connections or ancestry.

Pretentious, much?

I read loads of french lifestyle and french chic blogs, because i am inspired by some of the principles.

You mum sounds like she does this on steroids! I'm impressed!

(Nigella also does this. She freely admits she has spent most of her life wishing she were Italian).

AThousandTimesYes · 28/12/2020 06:40

I have a friend who I went to school with, then college with and stayed in touch with for years after she has always been English with no accent.. lost contact for a couple of years then met up for a night out and she had the STRONGEST Scottish accent I struggled to understand her half the night, it was totally bizarre! She said boyfriend (of about a year) was Scottish and it rubbed off... I didn't want to push it coz at the end of the day it doesn't affect me but surely there's no way that could happen?! It's odd!

DemolitionBarbie · 28/12/2020 06:48

I dunno, she's managed to become massively rich and land Alec Baldwin, so she's probably doing something right. Maybe she was just working on her personal brand!

Bluntness100 · 28/12/2020 06:50

This reads like you read the story in the daily fail or Twitter and just believed it.

I don’t know what actually happened, but I follow her on Instagram, as I think thr kids are cute, and she certainly doesn’t speak with a Spanish accent, she has a full on American accent. The only time she has a Spanish accent is if she’s speaking Spanish. Which is not often. When she speaks normally she speaks with a straight up American accent.

The rest I can’t comment on, but clearly the media/social media has exaggerated this, because as said, she certainly doesn’t speak with a Spanish accent.

Woewoewoejoy · 28/12/2020 06:54

I literally can not hear much of a Spanish accent anyway. It sounded like someone who speaks two accents fluently and routinely. She spent a good part of her childhood there so yes I would say she is part Spanish.

My kids are mixed. Not Spanish and when they speak their fathers language they have the accent. Yes sometimes when they mix their English has a slight accent too. Never occurred to me that this would be weird. Also since I have been married I now speak my husband's language too and sometimes I slip up and my accent has changed slightly as we speak his language a lot at home. People's accents do change depending on their environment. I also have this weird thing when I speak to someone with an accent I tend to take a slight bit of it unconsciously and it will stay with me for a few hours Blush

RickiTarr · 28/12/2020 06:58

This reads like you read the story in the daily fail or Twitter and just believed it.

I don’t know what actually happened,

So you don’t have a scoobie what actually happened but you have just randomly decided that OP has no reason to think the story credible @Bluntness100 ?

Weird. You could try googling to find out what happened before you post?

RickiTarr · 28/12/2020 06:59

@DemolitionBarbie

🤨

Are you the spokeswoman for the Fantasists’ Guild? 😏

springiscoming12 · 28/12/2020 07:00

This story is the gift that keeps on giving - the video of her pretending not to know what cucumbers are called in English is hilarious Grin

Needhelpwithaquestion · 28/12/2020 07:00

I’ve just watched a few clips and she has an American accent. I do think it’s odd to turn it on and off

PurplePansy05 · 28/12/2020 07:04

Living in Spain for part of her childhood (assuming that's true because there have already been comments it is not and she was only going there for holiday) does not make her Spanish Hmm Following this logic 3/4 of the UK would be "Spanish".

She's ridiculous commenting that she's a white woman, of course Spaniards are white, she's confusing with Latin Americans clearly Confused

The whole thing is either offensive and done purely for publicity or she's mentally unwell. I'm going to hold fire because from some of her previous content I thought the latter anyway.

GreenlandTheMovie · 28/12/2020 07:18

I think this has been blown up out of all proportion and this is bullying now.

Anyone who has spent part of their childhood in another country finds that a significant influence on their life. She grew up partly in Spain, most of her family now lives there and she texts her brother in Spanish.

I can't help thinking the attacks on her are particularly unkind because she is white, and some Americans confuse Spanish with Latino/Mexican/South American and think she is claiming to be from a racial minority when she is simply a Spanish afficiandao. Spending part of your childhood growing up in Spain is different from most Anericans' experience, as is having most of your family now living there.

The infamous cucumber clip was clearly tongue in cheek, but if you have been speaking another language, then sometimes you do forget the odd funny word and your brain substitutes what it thinks is the right one.

As for adding an "a" onto the end of her name - so what? It's one letter! Some people change their whole names. I have a friend called Paul, routinely referred to as "Paulo" because the joke is he could pass for Italian. Its not exactly unusual.

14ScottsRoad · 28/12/2020 07:25

I speak a a second language (Half of one really as although i have been studying for decades i am not that good at it) and i sometimes forget a word in english and substute the other one. English is my mother tongue.

I dream in the other language sometimes too, and when i am drunk it comes out more.

Ozgirl75 · 28/12/2020 07:29

I had a bilingual friend at university who said that when she’d been in France for ages and only speaking french, she would sometimes forget English words and also dreamed in french.
However, presumably this isn’t the case for “Hillary” Baldwin as she must speak English all the time as her husband is American!
It’s so funny, I saw on Twitter something like she must have done this for a dare to pick up Alec and then her friends were like “so what are you going to do, just be Spanish forever??” Grin

PurplePansy05 · 28/12/2020 07:30

I speak several languages too and lived in several countries, it has been a big influence and yes you do occasionally mix up the languages/think/dream in a different language, depending on your proficiency. But I don't understand the name change, lying about being born elsewhere, and building up a personal brand based on that. This isn't normal.

The cucumbergate...
