Sneezing very loudly

My NDN does a sneeze which is the loudest I've ever heard, it kind of turns into a very loud scream noise. Makes me jump even through the wall, never heard anything like it. Last night woke me up in the middle of the night. Has to be heard to be believed. (I don't think they're especially ill or something because they do it a lot ie over months)

For background, NDN very noisy, constantly screaming at their dc and slamming doors, very loud in the garden, etc types

AIBU to think they could sneeze quieter eg if they were at the cinema or at work, or is sneeze volume fixed?

I think I am your NDN OP, though I can kind of sneeze inwardly if I concentrate very hard! Bumping this for you to see how loudly other people sneeze.

Littlemilkjug · 22/12/2020 20:05

I live with a loud sneezer. I reckon it's purely some weird cry for attention. He does not sneeze like this in the cinema or at weddings or funerals, so it must be controllable....

TH22 · 22/12/2020 20:06

I absolutely HATE loud sneezers. I swear they do it on purpose!

fizznchips · 22/12/2020 20:11

I'm a loud sneezer, it drives my husband mad and the dog still hasn't got used to it!

MariaTia · 22/12/2020 20:14

It would drive me nuts to live with one. Although I kind of feel like I am given that I hear it through the wall so loudly. But being in the same room has to be worse Wine

Can you adjust it fizznchips eg at a wedding as pp said?

I sneeze loud. I pee less than trying to stifle it.

speakout · 22/12/2020 20:17

Performance sneezing- I cant stand it.

There are 3 ways to sneeze.

  1. A stifled sneeze- which I have heard is not a healthy thing to do.
  2. A normal sneeze.
  3. A performance sneeze, where people engage the vocal cords and shout during the sneeze, sometimes even verbalising a loud "Aaah Choo" for added effect.
CoolCatTaco · 22/12/2020 20:17

I'm a loud sneezer, quite dramatic sometimes, but no control over it at all. DH & DD think it's hilarious, in a taking the piss out of me kind of way.
And I nearly always sneeze in threes...

BasinHaircut · 22/12/2020 20:19

Am a loud sneezer. I cannot control it. If I try I end up losing control of my mouth instead and dribbling/spitting everywhere.

We are also a very shouty household so apologies if you are my next door neighbour!

goose1964 · 22/12/2020 20:19

I'm a loud sneezed too

Kakiweewee · 22/12/2020 20:20

I must also be a performance hiccuper because they are as loud as sneezes. Lol

NewCatMummy · 22/12/2020 20:20

Of course they can control it if they try, it’s just attention seeking bollocks.

AngelonTopoftheTree · 22/12/2020 20:20

I'm a loud sneezer too, but not as loud ad DH who sets the glass chiming.

BasinHaircut · 22/12/2020 20:21

@Kakiweewee same! My hiccups are outrageously loud too.

I don’t know why people struggle to believe it’s not controllable.

blubberball · 22/12/2020 20:22

I sneeze loudly. I don't like it at all. If I'm caught off guard, then I genuinely can't help it. If I focus then I can stifle it a little.

sbhydrogen · 22/12/2020 20:24

I sneeze loudly but it's because it feels good. I don't scream-sneeze though, only do the classic "ah-CHOO!"

DoubleNegativePanda · 22/12/2020 20:27

I'm a big, loud sneezer. I try really hard to control it, but my "small" sneeze is your huge sneeze. To try to sneeze your idea of normally is actually quite painful for me. Genuinely feels like my head will explode or my eyes will pop out or something.

It's embarrassing, and I annoy my ownself with the noise. It's certainly not a bid for attention Sad

DoubleNegativePanda · 22/12/2020 20:29

Now that I've read the actual thread, a lot of you can fuck right off and have a Biscuit

BitchIAmFromChicago · 22/12/2020 20:30

My DH is scream-sneezer. It makes me want to punch him in the throat.

NastyBlouse · 22/12/2020 20:30

Loud sneezer here. Always two in a row. I don’t add ‘vocals’ (“ahh-choo”) but it comes out noisy anyway. Absolutely zero control over it, sorry.

Drives DH mad, he does polite little Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady sneezes and cannot fathom why I can’t.

I tried to stifle it a few times and I hurt my ear so I don’t any more.

userxx · 22/12/2020 20:31

though I can kind of sneeze inwardly if I concentrate very hard!

Can't tell you the number of times I've put my back out doing this.

olivo · 22/12/2020 20:32

I was told it's as bad for you to stifle, so as someone with dodgy Eustachian tubes, I let it out whenever possible.no performance but often loud.

sbhydrogen · 22/12/2020 20:32

"To try to sneeze your idea of normally is actually quite painful for me. Genuinely feels like my head will explode or my eyes will pop out or something."

Should have said the same thing. I do sometimes try to sneeze quietly (like when I'm in public) but it feels just like how @DoubleNegativePanda described.

jay55 · 22/12/2020 20:32

I'm a loud sneezer, wish I could control it. Genetic apparently, like whether you can curl your tongue or not.
