Sneezing very loudly

MariaTia · 22/12/2020 16:51

My NDN does a sneeze which is the loudest I've ever heard, it kind of turns into a very loud scream noise. Makes me jump even through the wall, never heard anything like it. Last night woke me up in the middle of the night. Has to be heard to be believed. (I don't think they're especially ill or something because they do it a lot ie over months)

For background, NDN very noisy, constantly screaming at their dc and slamming doors, very loud in the garden, etc types

AIBU to think they could sneeze quieter eg if they were at the cinema or at work, or is sneeze volume fixed?

I occasionally screechy sneeze. It's usually when h allergies are playing up but have been calm for a while but then BOOM! they're back!

CoolCatTaco · 22/12/2020 22:32

It's not for attention, why would anyone want to do attention seeking sneezes?! It's not like it's positive attention, it's either people laughing at you, irritated by you or repulsed by you. Who the fuck wants that?!

Ontheboardwalk · 22/12/2020 22:37

I spent thousands on soundproofing next door because of shouting, banging, parrot and yapping dogs. Only think I really hear now is the MASSIVE yawn he does every night to prove how tired he is

It must be really loud in the house

Berlioz23 · 22/12/2020 22:43

I’m a loud sneezer, you really can’t stop it. I can put it off if I try very hard but it just happens again a minute later. Sometimes I can’t even do that and it comes out as a bark 😳, was very embarrassing when I did that in my first lecture at university.

PurplePinapple · 22/12/2020 22:55

I'm a loud sneezer, it's nothing to do with attention seeking🙄🙄 if I try and sneeze quietly I piss myself. So I know what I'd rather do.

Honeyroar · 22/12/2020 22:59

I’m actually quite shocked that people think it’s a form of attention seeking!

CherryBlossomTree7 · 22/12/2020 23:08

Of course you can make a sneeze louder by shouting at the same time.

But some people just naturally sneeze loudly. I think I'm quite a loud sneezer but not massively so. Those little dainty sniffly sneezes that people do have always interested me Grin

NiceandCalm · 22/12/2020 23:34

If I try and supress a sneeze it kinda goes inwards and is incredibly painful. I used to have the whole office glare at me. I genuinely can't help it and often have several at a time. I'd love nothing more than to sneeze delicately but I simply can't, they can happen so sudden or build like a pressure cooker.

MaskingForIt · 22/12/2020 23:46

@TH22

I absolutely HATE loud sneezers. I swear they do it on purpose!
I promise you we don’t. I would love to be a quiet dainty sneezer, and I have spent considerable time googling techniques for making my sneezes quieter, but alas I am still creating rip-snorters.

I am 7 months pregnant so now every time I have a massive sneeze I also wee myself a bit.

SunsetBeetch · 23/12/2020 00:02

Exactly. What a bizarre thing to think!

I do very loud sneezes at times. I have non allergic rhinitis. They hurt my throat and my nasal passages, which can remain sore for a while afterwards so I'd rather not! Other than that, I'm very quiet.

ladybird69 · 23/12/2020 01:42

I’m a loud sneezer, really loud, but if I don’t let it all out my pelvis goes into a spasm which is absolutely agony. So I either sneeze loudly or sneeze quietly and then roll around the floor screaming in pain! And no I’m definitely not attention seeking. Anyone else this happens to?

Taikoo · 23/12/2020 02:43

Performance sneezing.
I hate it too. Angry
They should be taken outside and shot.

yvanka · 23/12/2020 02:55

DP used to be a loud sneezer and yawner. I have trained him out of both with my withering glare.

I know!

I obviously asked someone to stamp on my face in rugby, to turn my previously almost silent sneezes into loud ones 🤣

I can’t have my septum fixed until I retire from rugby, I have been told even after surgery I will have to keep my mouth open when I sneeze or I could damage the surgery site.

Snowman2020 · 23/12/2020 07:14

I sneeze really loud, my DP alway laughs when I sneeze! When I was in school we were at the Christmas concert and a year 7 boy was playing the piano (very beautifully) and I sneezed and everyone turned round and looked at me, I was mortified!

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 23/12/2020 07:19

I’m not a performance sneezer, but my husband is. Unfortunately, due to a plethora of allergies, he will sneeze, in blocks of around 10-15 sneezes, around 15 times a day. Drives me round the bend. A-a-CHOO! It always startles my younger doodle so he starts ‘Boof’ing too. A—a-CHOO! Boof. A-a-CHOO! Boof.

And when my daughter was born, same issue. However she has a petite ‘choo!’. A bit like a gentle tap on a high hat.

If I sneeze twice in a month, then I’m ill, possibly dying. My son is likewise a ‘once a month’ sneezer.

I’d love to do a PhD on using sneezing as a unique identifier for security purposes as I think everyone has a unique sneeze, in both volume & cadence. This thought has rattled round my brain for 25 years since being surrounded by stereo sneezers. Drives me bonkers.

honeylulu · 23/12/2020 07:26

My husband screams when he sneezes. If I'm not expecting it sometimes I almost piss myself in fright (childbirth is not kind to the pelvic floor). He is capable of sneezing normally but says it's "not as satisfying ". Tosser. Unfortunately our 6 year old thinks its hilarious and joins in so I'm now also outnumbered.

PeppermintSoda · 23/12/2020 07:28

My husband does an extremely loud
ah-cha-HOO-EE-AAAHH

My NDN vocalises the aaa-chooo part and then it goes into like a high pitched scream which kind of goes up at the end

At least my NDN just does a normal sneeze sound, albeit very high volume. The above drawn out noises sound annoying

speakout · 23/12/2020 07:29

It's not the expelled air that gives me the rage, it's the decision to engage the vocal chords and even choose words like "AAAh CHOO" when people sneeze.
That is a decision, and when it become performance sneezing.

winterbabythistime · 23/12/2020 07:30

My mum does this. There's no need.

Gurufloof · 23/12/2020 07:35

Isneeze loud. I pee less than trying to stifle it

Yup me too. It's not deliberate though. I usually am caught by surprise when I sneeze so its loud cos else my eyes will pop and I will wet mesen.
If it's a cold like I have now, my lip is split so trying to control the sneeze means my lip splits again. And of course pee myself.

hopeishere · 23/12/2020 07:51

DH does this. Performance sneezing. When he feels a sneeze coming he sort of opens his mouth and does something with his tongue that amplifies the sound.

Drives. Me. Mad.

SunsetBeetch · 23/12/2020 10:13

No it's really not.

I don't have time to 'make a decision' about how I'm going to sneeze, if it's a particularly violent one, it's just going to shoot out of me without warning.

CoolCatTaco · 23/12/2020 10:23

Honestly, such superior tripe from the squeaky lady sneezers.

SunsetBeetch · 23/12/2020 10:42

The cliche that sneezes sound like "ahh choo!" didn't come out of thin air. Just because you don't sound like that, doesn't mean other people don't.
