Sneezing very loudly

MariaTia · 22/12/2020 16:51

My NDN does a sneeze which is the loudest I've ever heard, it kind of turns into a very loud scream noise. Makes me jump even through the wall, never heard anything like it. Last night woke me up in the middle of the night. Has to be heard to be believed. (I don't think they're especially ill or something because they do it a lot ie over months)

For background, NDN very noisy, constantly screaming at their dc and slamming doors, very loud in the garden, etc types

AIBU to think they could sneeze quieter eg if they were at the cinema or at work, or is sneeze volume fixed?

I also genuinely thought/think your eyeballs can pop out if you stifle a sneeze. Don’t fancy trying it!

AngelonTopoftheTree · 22/12/2020 20:35

@userxx

though I can kind of sneeze inwardly if I concentrate very hard!

Can't tell you the number of times I've put my back out doing this.

It feels like I've popped my eardrums when trying to stifle a sneeze on occasion- not pleasant!
Hidehi4 · 22/12/2020 20:36

I sneeze loud so I don’t piss meself for some reason the quieter I am the more dribbles down me leg

MissJeanLouise · 22/12/2020 20:38

My husband does an extremely loud
ah-cha-HOO-EE-AAAHH. He says he can’t control it, but never sneezes like that on a zoom meeting/ in church. I don’t mind though, it’s a standing joke in our family and makes me smile. His snoring, on the other hand...

Okbye · 22/12/2020 20:39

I’m generally a loud sneezer however only do fully loud sneezes at home, would NEVER do it in public or if we had guests 😄 (luckily we live in a detached house!)

I believe the genetic thing though, my dad sneezes even louder than me - so loud it makes you jump!

Sleepthief · 22/12/2020 20:39

DH had the most ridiculous loud sneeze ever, which I thought was totally put on - largely to wind me up (mission accomplished)! But I've recently discovered that my friend has the cutest little sneeze ever, so it makes me think you can't choose your sneeze 🤷‍♀️

MariaTia · 22/12/2020 20:39

That's interesting. I've stifled them and not felt these kind of effects (and I'd say I sneeze at average volume) so maybe with the super loud sneezers theirs comes out with more force or something.

My NDN vocalises the aaa-chooo part and then it goes into like a high pitched scream which kind of goes up at the end Confused

Grin fair enough

How do you stop yourself doing it so loudly when you need to Okbye?

I scream sneeze, normally at the top of my lungs but I don’t verbalise words. It’s more like a “aaaaahhhhhHHH WOOOOOO!!!”

Chocolate4me · 22/12/2020 20:42

My neighbour is so loud with added aaachoo!! And he does it into the air, no covering it with his arm, made me mad mad mad with covid around, I know it's outside but it's still disgusting!!! Esp. When out in the garden knowing it could be flying our way lol

Nostrings457 · 22/12/2020 20:43

In public spaces i hold my nose. At home i sheeze so loud and finish it off with a R-OOOOOAAAAAAAARRR. its ridiculous

lilylongjohn · 22/12/2020 20:46

You might be my ndn, my dh makes the whole house hump when he sneezes

DrManhattan · 22/12/2020 20:48

100% attention seeking. Only small kids can get away with it. Really embarrassing.

CheeseIsMyVice · 22/12/2020 20:48

I absolutely bet I’m louder than everyone else on this thread. I can’t help it! I’ve sneezed so loudly before I’ve made my dog so scared that she peed everywhere. It’s not just loud though it’s like my entire body contorts. It’s quite an event!

Thankfully I have no neighbours.

PeppermintSoda · 22/12/2020 20:49

My NDN does this too. We actually can't hear much through the walls. The only think we can hear is shouting, which I've not heard for ages and rarely happened anyway. Crying (ditto above) and the woman's sneeze.

SimonJT · 22/12/2020 20:51

I’m a loud sneezer, I have a badly deviated septum and can only really breathe out of one nostril. I always do two as well, since I broke my nose sneezing is painful, if I’m really unlucky it causes a nosebleed. Have you ever seen the mess when you sneeze mid nosebleed?!

Before I broke my nose I was a very quiet sneezer.

lighlypoached · 22/12/2020 20:51

I sneezed so loud at work one day (in london) that a man on the phone (in New York ) said 'bless you!'

I sneeze loudly. If I tried to contain it my head would deffo explode Grin

MariaTia · 22/12/2020 20:52

Ouch that sounds painful SimonJT

I'm a quiet unassuming person but a loud sneezer. Luckily not often.

dudsville · 22/12/2020 20:53

I think I might a performance sneezer! I can hurt my back with a sneeze, so if I'm standing I brace myself (I now realise I do this for the dramatic effect of my performance) and if I'm in bed on my back or a propped up position I have to quickly change position. What's that if not posing for a sneeze?

I used to be an inhibited sneezer. Now I'm not suggesting that all quiet sneezers are inhibited, just that I was. If I was in public I didn't want to draw attention to myself. My sneezes would dissipate somewhere behind my eyes, leaving that burning tingling sensation of a sneeze left out in the cold only to burn away before making it past the threshold. Very rarely one of those sneezes would develop so far as to make me do that embarrassing crinkled up face only to disappear a second later leaving me appearing like I'd randomly made a face.

My mother is a loud sneezer. I now sound like her. Was she just trying to keep her back loose all these years or was she really just seeking undue attention?

LemonDrizzles · 22/12/2020 20:56

I'm a very loud sneezer.

lipsticklovley · 22/12/2020 20:57

If I sneeze quietly I'll wee myself. If I sneeze freely it's fine? Bizarre

midgebabe · 22/12/2020 20:59

About half the population can control sneeze volume well

The rest can't

The control and volume is determined by your vocal arrangement

MariaTia · 22/12/2020 21:03

That's interesting midgebabe Would that include things like a big WOOO or scream at the end? I can see people can't control the sneeze itself but what about the rest of it

I worked with a man who, once he started, couldn't stop. I warned him that I give two "bless you"s and if he sneezed again he'd be told to get his shit together Grin

The other guy in our office would take the piss when it started and just repeat "bless you, bless you, bless you, bless you" over and over in a deadpan voice until Sneezy laughed enough to, well, get his shit together Grin
