Sneezing very loudly

MariaTia · 22/12/2020 16:51

My NDN does a sneeze which is the loudest I've ever heard, it kind of turns into a very loud scream noise. Makes me jump even through the wall, never heard anything like it. Last night woke me up in the middle of the night. Has to be heard to be believed. (I don't think they're especially ill or something because they do it a lot ie over months)

For background, NDN very noisy, constantly screaming at their dc and slamming doors, very loud in the garden, etc types

AIBU to think they could sneeze quieter eg if they were at the cinema or at work, or is sneeze volume fixed?

This is hilarious. The PP who makes the wurzles/pirate OOOOO-AARRRR noise cracks me up.

I'm an averagely loud sneezer, I couldn't contain it, even somewhere quiet, but it doesn't shake the windows or anything. My mum always sneezes in threes or more and gets really cross if you say "bless you" before she's completely finished. You end up saying "bless you, bless you, ooh bless you" etc and it really annoys her.

MrsLeclerc · 22/12/2020 21:08

DH sneezes in 3s. He never does one or two, always three in a row. They are loud and he always trails off the end of the last one with a long “ooh” sound. I agree with PP it’s an attention sneeze.

I’m the opposite, I sneeze inward and my colleagues have said my sneezes sound very delicate 😂

Honeyroar · 22/12/2020 21:09

I sneeze really loudly too. If I try and sneeze quietly I run the risk of farting or seeing!😂

Honeyroar · 22/12/2020 21:09

Weeing nor seeing!

GypsyWanderer · 22/12/2020 21:13

My DH does this. A proper loud sneeze but not just loud, continuous! He can sneeze 10+ times in a row and it just goes on and on 🥱 I say ‘bless you’ after the first and then ‘attention seeker’ after the fourth 😂

If that isn’t bad enough, one of our DS (just turned 13) does the same thing. He’ll be in his bedroom and you’ll hear it practically shaking the floor/ceiling!

SilentScreenQueen · 22/12/2020 21:14

@MariaTia

That's interesting midgebabe Would that include things like a big WOOO or scream at the end? I can see people can't control the sneeze itself but what about the rest of it
I couldn’t sneeze quietly even if I was hiding from a serial killer and a sneeze, unless quiet, would give away my location. I’d be dead.
marmitepasta · 22/12/2020 21:17

I am enjoying this thread.
I would say I am a medium to loud sneezer.
I have a friend who always does about six little sneezes in a row. Never does single sneezes. It's very cute.

PiggyPlumPie · 22/12/2020 21:18

My dad is a loud sneezer - always has been. We used to scatter when he started.

My kids today say "Bless you Grandad!" when we hear a loud sneezer. We live in Scotland and him in England! Grin

pilates · 22/12/2020 21:21

I hate loud sneezers, DH does it sometimes. I find it attention seeking.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 22/12/2020 21:24

Dh does this and there is absolutely NO NEED! It actually makes me angry when he does it(I am unreasonable I know)

CoraPirbright · 22/12/2020 21:24

DH sneezes loud enough to wake Norway. Pisses me off no end.

Dilbertian · 22/12/2020 21:25

One of my dc is a quiet sneezer, all you hear is Sh! or Ch!. The rest of us range all the way up in volume to dh, who shouts his sneezes.

One day I read that some languages don't have an expression to say in response to a sneeze, no equivalent to Bless You, because no particular significance is given to sneezes. And in those places people sneeze quietly. Basically we have learned to sneeze in an attention-seeking manner.

That's when I realised that when I sneeze noisily it's because I'm voicing it. Tensing my vocal chords, my lips and my tongue, just as when singing or shouting. Or when trying to stifle the sneeze. So I tried relaxing and allowing the sneeze to come out gently - and it works! Well, some of the time. If it's a smaller sneeze I can sneeze quietly, if I concentrate, and I don't feel the eye-popping pressure. Big sneezes are noisier, though not shouted, and the pressure is far reduced.

GlowingOrb · 22/12/2020 21:26

I am a loud sneezer. If I could stop or suppress the sneeze I would. They are incredibly painfulL. As unpleasant as my sneezes are to bystanders, I can assure you that it is worse for me. My ears hurt from the sound and my nasal cavities feel a very intense pressure.

Allfednonedead · 22/12/2020 21:28

I'm a loudish sneezer, with a classic AtchOO! sound. It infuriates my DH, but I'm not stopping.
To answer PPs, I can sort of control it, but it's extremely painful if I do.
Basically, I normally hold my nose so it doesn't tear my sinuses apart. If I can't hold my nose while sneezing, it feels like I've snorted bleach.
I'm not prepared to do that just to stop my DH thinking I'm doing it deliberately.
(Now that I've explained, he accepts it, but I can still see him wincing.)

Fbtw · 22/12/2020 21:29

Am a loud sneezer. I can’t control it at all.

Botherfreedays · 22/12/2020 21:30

I sneeze REALLY loudly. I used to suppress them and sort of direct them inwards, but I fractured my rib! So now, sorry but everyone just had to put up with them.

ILoveYoga · 22/12/2020 21:35

My DH does this. So very annoying!!! I’ve taken to shouting back GOD BLESS YOU!!!!

Thankfully though we live in a detached house with no close neighbours. I do wonder though his his co-workers put up with it. He must almost burst their ear drums on zoom calls.

Nottherealslimshady · 22/12/2020 21:36

Start shouting "bless you" Grin

I'm sensitive to sound, bloody hate performance sneezes and coughers, sshhh!

MimsyBorogroves · 22/12/2020 21:37

I am a loud sneezer. When I had an operation on my nose as a young child I was "taught" that I had to sneeze out of my throat rather than my nose. So I do. And it's noisy. Even my deaf dog can hear me.

DH is also a noisy sneezer. I fucking hate it when he does it.

Gag1964 · 22/12/2020 21:38

My DH goes into a 'full body action' when he sneezes, which involves his legs going up in the air and then stamping on the floor. Makes me jump every time!

MariaTia · 22/12/2020 21:50

I used to suppress them and sort of direct them inwards, but I fractured my rib
Shock Shock

Start shouting "bless you" Grin Hadn't thought of that! maybe I will

TitsInAbsentia · 22/12/2020 21:57

Good job you don't live next door to me, I'm loud and always at least six in a row! I can't stifle them, makes me wet myself and gives me hiccups...really attractive...

I used to work with a lady who when she sneezed sounded like she was puking..could never get used to it.

VetiverAndLavender · 22/12/2020 22:05

I probably sneeze with above-average volume, but it depends on the sneeze. The louder the sneeze, the more painful it is, for me. I try to suppress the sneeze in public, but there's only so much you can do. I promise you I'm not doing it for attention. If anything, having someone acknowledge the sneeze with a "bless you" is something I'd much rather avoid, in public! It's already embarrassing enough if I've sneezed loudly; I don't want extra attention drawn to it! Blush

wrinkleyeyebags · 22/12/2020 22:12

I'm a loud sneezer. If I need to sneeze at an awkward time like wedding/ funeral I will stifle it.
It's incredibly painful to do so I try not to so do it often.

I'm often curious about how people that do those very small sneezes manage it and wonder how effective they are.

Costacoffeeplease · 22/12/2020 22:17

I sneeze loudly, cannot control it at all, my dad also sneezed really loudly. I think it’s because my sneeze doesn’t come from my nose but from my throat. I don’t know how else to do it
