I have seen many times on social media, over the past week, people saying there is something else going on and the Covid rules are for a different reason entirely.
I just wondered if anyone truly believes the government have a different agenda for extending lockdown??

the fact that excess deaths are basically unaffected,

65k excess deaths seems statistically significant, and that’s despite all of the precautions.

Nomoreboobs · 28/11/2020 07:45

I don’t understand the heatwave part?

Nomoreboobs · 28/11/2020 07:46

Does anyone think we could be at war somehow?

slipperywhensparticus · 28/11/2020 07:55

There is a five minute clip of this circulating Facebook where she talks about us being turned into 5G masts its scary she believes this and is a doctor

pinkearedcow · 28/11/2020 08:09

@Fuckingshifty

So nobody thinks its fucking weird, we have a heatwave for the first time in 10 years which co-fucking-incides with the first lockdown. EVERY year before that snow and ice was clockwork. And the shit weather returned 'just in time' for lockdown to end... hmm 🤔
Eh? We haven't had snow and ice like clockwork across the whole of the UK for a long time, winters have been much wetter and milder for some years.

I think people cling to these theories because they are scared to face the simple truth. The virus has shown us just how defenceless we are in many ways and not in control of nature, which could wipe us out any day.

However, I do think those in power have taken advantage to line their pockets, look at Johnson and Hancock and co. handing out contracts to their chums. Disaster capitalism at its finest. I also think there is an element of a conspiracy in that our government is trying to cover up how incompetent it is.

Next episode of this: Brexit!

Does anyone think we could be at war somehow?

Possibly with credulity.

VaggieMight · 28/11/2020 08:11

I think some people lap it up because it makes sense in uncertain times.

I do pay some attention to conspiracy theories and I think they tend to be believed and spread by people who don't have much professional experience. Anyone who's worked with the civil service, government or any large organisation would know that the organisations are not capable of large scale conspiracies. Conspiracies suggest that the world is far more organised than it is.

I do believe that the government attempts elements of conspiracy, but it's in a disorganised way. For example at the beginning of the virus they delayed lockdown as the 'behaviour scientists' said the public would get compliance fatigue. In the end that has happened but that would be the Cummings effect. Also, no behaviour scientists were involved in that decision.

Incompetence rather than conspiracy.

pinkearedcow · 28/11/2020 08:17

slipperywhensparticus dear god I didn't even watch all of it. All the stuff about the rule of 6 = 666 etc. . Shock

Fuckingshifty · 28/11/2020 08:17

namechangefail2020

@Fuckingshifty I can't tell if you're joking or not but are you suggesting the gov can alter the weather. Oh dear or dear!!! 😂😂

Erm yes? Google cloud seeding. I was half joking based on the fact weather manipulation is common practice around the world, albeit to increase rainfall when water supplies are short. I genuinely thought everyone knew about it 🤷‍♀️

It still is fucking strange though how the heatwave started when lockdown started and ended within days of lockdown ending Wink

OutComeTheWolves · 28/11/2020 08:17

I don't believe in most of conspiracy theories and I think if you 'do your research' a lot of them are actually anti-Semitic.

However I won't condemn people for believing them. We've known since Hillsborough (or possibly even Aberfan) that governments lie to their citizens and are happy to collude with other authorities and the media to avoid looking bad.

Covid in particular has created a situation where the very wealthy have got wealthier (we know about government ministers giving huge contracts to their acquaintances who are incapable of fulfilling their obligations) but the rest of us are struggling terribly with smaller businesses closing, rising unemployment and the prospect of disproportionate tax rises for normal people while others are still able to avoid paying corporation tax and those who can afford a good accountant can use a good tax avoidance scheme. Furthermore the behaviour of Don Cummings and Boris' weird fake camping holiday, the House of Commons bar remaining open after 10 etc etc makes it appear that those setting the restrictions don't have any intention of sticking to them.

So in essence the government have created a situation where people who are unable to trust them anyway see them profiting from a situation that has negatively affected the majority of us. They've created this vacuum where people can't blindly believe what they are told but don't know what the truth is so they try to find it and that's when they come across all of these other theories. The people who allowed this to happen are the villains here not struggling people trying to make sense of a situation that is scary and unpredictable.

I would love to live in a world free from spin and pr with a truly independent media, no billionaires and an open and honest government, but that is definitely a pipe dream!

Also trying to find order in a chaotic/unpredictable situation is a known coping strategy which is another reason why a lot of people are happy to believe this nightmare is all part of a great plan. I'm pretty sure I read that after WW1 a lot of people thought that Spanish Flu was biological warfare too.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 28/11/2020 08:19

Conspiracy theories are kind of reassuring though. They all contain a touching faith in the essential competence of our leaders (whether they be lizards or the Illuminati). Which, sadly, is clear evidence that they’re all rubbish.

pinkearedcow · 28/11/2020 08:28

OutComeTheWolves This is a very interesting read about Spanish Flu and conspiracy theories. It was written before this pandemic. It ia also quite scarily prescient about how a new virus might spread.

"One hundred years on, the Spanish flu is a cautionary tale of the devastation that new infectious diseases can cause. Although we now have some vaccines, they are not universally applicable to all flu strains.

A new vaccine would take at least six months to develop, and in today’s ever more interconnected world and the technology of intercontinental flight, we are vulnerable to such an outbreak."

Nomoreboobs · 28/11/2020 08:34

Wow. It is odd with the 666 and Lucifer aspect though, what’s happening to this world. If this was really the case, wouldn’t all doctors be querying the vaccine? Can’t all just be from fear surely?

WotWouldCJDo · 28/11/2020 08:41

If you're in to podcasts, this is a rather brilliant six-part series on conspiracy theories that puts them in a historical and cultural context, and offers guidance on handling people who have been sucked in.

niceupthedance · 28/11/2020 08:53

Woah that video is nuts!! We are going to be tracked by the vaccine to store all our data in the cloud... she says basically everything we do, heart rate and BP etc.

Does she not know that the apple device she is probably recording from tracks everything you click on, listens to all your conversations, knows what to advertise to you as well as measures your steps and where you go who you're with etc. She said "we become the commodity". Newsflash love internet users are already!!

Total batshittery

Nomoreboobs · 28/11/2020 08:57

Why is she saying all that though? Especially if she’s a doctor..😬

silversquid · 28/11/2020 09:03

At the start of the pandemic the mantra was 'I don't know anyone who's got it'. You don't hear that one so much now. It appears to have morphed into 'It's just the flu!'

Nomoreboobs · 28/11/2020 09:30

I believe the virus is real 100% I have long covid and it’s been horrific. Just the lies and dealing with it all a a gut instinct that something is ‘Off’ no idea what though it of anything! 🤷🏻‍♀️

WotWouldCJDo · 28/11/2020 09:33

Fear? Indecision? Mistakes?

Nanny0gg · 28/11/2020 09:38

@Retiremental

Or is that the vaccine Hmm
Vaccine
SpeckledFrogsLog · 28/11/2020 09:40

I love that people are more willing to believe in government conspiracies than sheer bloody incompetence Grin

One of the points that often occurs to me is that many of these MPs have significant financial investments so why would it be in their interests to tank the economy?

And if I see the word “sheeple” used by the Facebook knobheads I’ll scream Angry

OldOrMaybeNotThatOld · 28/11/2020 09:40

Does it truly not bother anybody that airlines are suggesting proof of vaccination prior to international travel? I don’t think I care about any of the other theories except this point...

Cornettoninja · 28/11/2020 09:52

It’s all bullshit which has become popular because ignorant people have far too much time on their hands.

The corruption in the UK as a result of the pandemic has been ministers handing out contracts to their incompetent mates but that’s reduced to minimal outrage because of the ‘great reset’ or whatever bollocks is currently the fad. I don’t deny that there the situation has been taken advantage of but it wasn’t engineered by the new world order.

If I was to lean into any conspiracy theory it would be weaponised social technology similar Cambridge analytica. The fervent determination of people to actively choose to follow information that actively harms them and wider society is painful to watch. I’d like to believe it isn’t just that people are dipshits and that they are actually being manipulated but I’m sadly not sold on the idea.

We’ve had a world of information opened up to us over the last twenty years and it’s really sad (and dangerous) that we neglected to teach people critical thinking whilst encouraging the notion that opinion is as important as fact.

Cornettoninja · 28/11/2020 09:54

@OldOrMaybeNotThatOld

No, it doesn’t bother me at all and is in fact socially responsible in a pandemic.

I had to have or have proof of vaccinations to work in my role in the NHS to protect myself and others. It’s not a new concept.

MotheringShites · 28/11/2020 10:09

Of course some of the more outlandish theories are just silly, but I can’t help but think about how the reactions to Covid/lockdown has pretty much forced society into behaviour which suits the global climate change agenda (not necessarily a bad thing). Businesses who wouldn’t have countenanced the idea, have been forced to accept that working from home is viable, far fewer cars on the road, air travel decimated. Maybe not so much a conspiracy but an opportunity grabbed.
