To think Camilla should be queen?

Just interested in people's views. The whole Charles/Diana/Camilla thing was grim but it's also grim that she's the one treated as responsible rather than him. All water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned.

(Obviously some people would get rid of the lot of them, and fair enough.)

I don't see any reason why she shouldn't be queen

WindblowingSW · 18/11/2020 18:36

She will be Queen.

Divorcees have been married and a Queen before -think of Henry the 8th he divorced, but stayed King.

Camilla didn't marry Charles as she wasn't allowed. She wasn't a virgin and after 18 months of shagging -Charles wasn't making a committment -she didn't have a choice -she couldn't wait for forever and APB was there and proposed when Charles left without making a committment for Naval Duty. Diana had an examination before she was married (she referred to it as humilating) to prove she was a virgin. In the 1980s!

Charles pratted around a lost her and had to find a backup. Diana's sister- turned him down, and set her up with Charles -4 meetings over 6 months and she proposed -he knew what he was doing.

What he hoped was a partnership as in the past -you have affairs and then work together in public.
They under-estimated Diana time and time again. They couldn't understand the love and grief for her -or her "star" power -Charles was jealous of her from the word go.

No, I don't think she should be Queen (obviously). They've been able to get married and have their happy after. The amount of suffering that other people have had to endure in that family in order to maintain the monarchy, they've got off pretty bloody lucky. But I don't think the sufferings of those before them (Princess Margaret, the dreadful Edward and Wallis) etc, should be made a mockery of by this pair, There should be some consequences for their selfish actions.

Personally, I think when the Queen pops off, it's likely to be the end of the monarchy, particularly if succession falls to Charles and Camilla. Certainly in terms of the Commonweatlh, I think a strong rash of republicanism is going to break out!

(Oh, and I don't watch The Crown, refuse to watch that crap).

Smallsteps88 · 18/11/2020 18:42

If the monarchy was done away with would that mean the United Kingdom ceased to exist? As it is a kingdom? So NI, Scotland, England and Wales would just be 4 separate countries all ruled by their own government?

mrscampbellblackagain · 18/11/2020 18:42

I think Camilla comes across really well. I always get the impression she didn't really want to be Queen but was happy being the mistress and drinking gin and hunting in her lovely country home.

I do think the monarchy is going to change a lot in the coming years which will be a good thing.

I am just here for the fashion and dynasty/soap opera elements but must remember it isn't actually The Windsors Grin

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/11/2020 18:43

Charles looks happy. His children seem to like her. She will be married to the king. No reason not to be Queen.

plixy · 18/11/2020 18:45

@Pacif1cDogwood when a queen is crowned her husband is not automatically made king as that would put him above her (of course a king is more important than a queen Hmm). The husband can be given a title such as consort if granted by the queen but he will never be crowned.
When a king is crowned his wife can be crowned queen the same day. Unless they choose to do something different, like camilla wishing to be consort.

PinkOrchids7 · 18/11/2020 18:45

Queen Elizabeth’s husband is Prince Phillip. Camilla doesn’t deserve the term Queen Consort. I want the next king to be Prince William, not Charles.

ZenNudist · 18/11/2020 18:45

Really not a fan of monarchy. All for skipping Charles. I've got nothing major against Camilla but feel that she doesn't deserve the title any more than Charles deserves to be king.

Not hugely bothered about Wills and Kate. But if we have to have a monarchy I'd rather not waste time with Charles. I think he is too old to do the role justice.

pickledplumjam · 18/11/2020 18:47

The affair was years ago and they were clearly destined for one another. It's not as if Charles was off shagging everything that moved while he was married. He was in a family that forbade him from being with Camilla. He tried to do the right thing and get married to the right girl but that obviously didn't work. Even when the tabloids hurled everything they had at her Camilla has remained dignified and carried on. She hasn't launched a series of silly lawsuits. I think she's lovely.

ChickOnAStick · 18/11/2020 18:47

Love Camilla! Better than holier-than-thou Kate.

mbosnz · 18/11/2020 18:48

I do hope that Charles shows some awareness of just how vulnerable the monarchy will be at the time of transition (it always is). And some humility. Because if he does, it might manage to save the monarchy, by making it that bit more palatable in its continuity.

mrscampbellblackagain · 18/11/2020 18:49

I do find it interesting how people have to denigrate one female to praise another.

She will be consort. Consort is the spouse of the reigning monarch, regardless of title they're given or adopt.

The question of Camilla's title is over being Princess Consort or Queen Consort, it's not the consort bit that's in question.

PrincessNutNut · 18/11/2020 18:51

Personally I don't care if she is, but rightly or wrongly to a lot of people it's a thorny issue. The smartest, safest and most diplomatic option is probably to take a title that isn't Queen or Princess anything; I know she is a princess but many people associate that term with Diana and wouldn't like it. She's probably best off sticking to Duchess.

mrscampbellblackagain · 18/11/2020 18:52

I would quite like to be a Duchess, Princess is a bit too Disney.

SarahBellam · 18/11/2020 18:52

Couldn’t give a rat’s ass. She could be Overlord of Suburbia.

lyralalala · 18/11/2020 18:52

Philip is a Prince because the Consort is always one step down, title wise, from their spouse.

Queen to Prince and King to Queen

So Camilla being Queen Consort is exactly the same in same of title balancing as The Queen and DofE

WitchesSpelleas · 18/11/2020 18:53
  1. No one should be Queen - the monarchy should be abolished.
  2. If that's not going to happen, Camilla will be queen whether she styles herself as that or not - because if you are stuck with a monarchy, you don't get to pick and choose, that's not how it works. Charles could've married much worse than Camilla - an axe-murderess or a serial killer and, guess what, she'd still become queen when he inherits the throne. That's why the monarchy has to go.
Smallsteps88 · 18/11/2020 18:53

Confused

Why is Kate “holier than thou”?

Leaannb · 18/11/2020 18:54

@LastGoldenDaysOfSummer

Of course she'll be queen. If Charles outlives his mother he'll be king and will have her as his queen.

I think she's lovely.

So why isn't Princeton Phillip King Phillip?
Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 18/11/2020 18:54

@ChickOnAStick

Oh please do tell us how you know them both? Hmm

GroundAlmonds · 18/11/2020 18:55

It’s an outmoded institution, but as long as they are there they should follow normal rules and protocol. Otherwise it’s just a reality show run along popularity lines.

Leaannb · 18/11/2020 18:56

So if you don't get to cherry pick then why isn't Prince Phillip not King Phillip?
Pukkatea · 18/11/2020 18:56

Henry VIII was technically never divorced. His marriages (all but his third and last) were annulled so that in the eyes of the church, he had never been married at all and was simply a widower after Jane Seymour died.

Historical aside...
