To think Camilla should be queen?

Just interested in people's views. The whole Charles/Diana/Camilla thing was grim but it's also grim that she's the one treated as responsible rather than him. All water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned.

(Obviously some people would get rid of the lot of them, and fair enough.)

Compared to almost all of our previous monarchs, Charles' behaviour was pretty tame. Certainly not remarkable . Anyone who thinks our monarchs should set the standards for acceptable behaviour hadnt read much history.

There are huge differences though, it was expected that wealthy men had mistresses or even amused themselves with servants. Husbands of mistresses were often proud their wife was a 'chosen' one.

Historically very few marriages were based on love, and those that were also had political reasons.

If someone had sat Diana down and said, "you will be the wife, get the title, the jewels, be the mother of future monarchs but your husband will continue to have a relationship with his mistress", she may or may not have agreed to the wedding.

You had an older man who spent as much of his early years with his grandmother as his mother and was brought up virtually as a victorian ,marrying a 20th century young woman who believed in romance and hadn't really done much living.

Head of the church, funded by tax payers, expecting people to bow and scrape before them. I would expect better of people in that role and hold them to a higher standard

Despite centuries of evidence to the contrary? Princes of Wales were renowned for the sexual incontinence, Charles has been a model of rectitude by comparison having married and remained faithful to his mistress.

Personofinterest1 · 20/11/2020 09:16

@VinylDetective well my gosh with credentials for the job like ‘best of a bad lot’ and ‘loyal to his mistress’ I suppose they will make a wonderful king and queen. Honestly you sound brainwashed

It’s 2020 now. People should not have to put up with bowing and scraping to m’lord because they’re uneducated downtrodden peasants. You know it’s ok to expect standards off people citizens are supporting - to say this is not good enough. This does not represent us.

VinylDetective · 20/11/2020 09:23

No @Personofinterest1, I’m not brainwashed. I’m a realist with a working knowledge of British history.

Ouioubagettue · 20/11/2020 09:33

I like Tracey Ullman’s Camilla, even though I love Hayden Gwynne. The Windsors is hilarious though.

Personofinterest1 · 20/11/2020 09:40

@VinylDetective a realist with a working knowledge of British history and extremely low standards for the face of Britain.

🤷‍♀️ Whatever.

All water under the bridge for the immediate family concerned however, yes they have treated Diana very badly but I don't think Camilla is the issue, I think Charles being incompetent is more of the issue. If Diana was alive and still married to Charles and was treated like a decent wife, then I think the public wouldn't mind Charles ever being king because Diana would be Queen. But Diana being out of the picture and after being so badly treated, I don't think the public would tolerate Charles in general let alone his ex mistress. Charles doesn't have much to bring to the table let alone his ex mistress. I wish they just allowed him to marry her as they clearly love each other and compliment each other.

eddiemairswife · 20/11/2020 16:05

I wasn't at all keen on Diana, but I do wish she had worn a seatbelt.

She was married to someone else at the time.

Not when they first met. Charles was discouraged from marrying her because she wasn’t a virgin, so she married APB instead.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 20/11/2020 16:36

I believe PC was told to have his fun with Camilla and marry someone else. I thought she married someone else when he went off on a naval tour without proposing. At that point l suspect the penny dropped that he wasn't going to. And he wouldn't have, because it wasn't 'allowed '. However l still think their subsequent actions were very poor and l completely agree they are not suitable role models.

Down with them all anyway l say.

WitchesSpelleas · 20/11/2020 17:00

Camilla married Andrew Parker-Bowles because she was madly in love with Andrew Parker-Bowles.

Is it 'The Crown' that's created a narrative of Charles and Camilla being unable to marry because the Queen wouldn't let them? I haven't watched 'The Crown' but there are some very strange opinions coming from somewhere.

S00LA · 20/11/2020 17:37

YY, the same as “ Princess Margaret was prevented from marrying the man she loved”. She wasn’t . She could have chosen to give you her money and title and marry him.

But apparently love wasn’t worth that much to her.

Same with Charles. He wanted the status and position more than he wanted her.

S00LA · 20/11/2020 17:41

give up her
