To think that Trump is not going to get re-elected?

There are still a few fringe types who think he’s going to get a landslide victory.

Personally I find this unlikely.

Any MNers from across the pond have a view more informed than myself?

@HelloToMyKitty
Name me one metric on which the US leads the world apart from 'military might'.

52andblue · 24/10/2020 18:28

and for many other things too, sorry, it's just that climate change affects the whole world, whereas other HUGE issues such as racism in the US is obviously worse for those who actually live there than those of us who look in from the outside and feel appalled by what has worsened under Trump's 'leadership'

LakieLady · 24/10/2020 18:30

@SuitedandBooted

I think he will win.

There are a lot of shy "Trumpers" who won't admit it to a pollster, but when they are actually voting, and nobody can see.....

I think he could well win, for the very reason you give @SuitedandBooted.

In 2016, DP and I both thought Trump might win, despite the polls, and we were right. We feel the same this time.

(We felt the same about the Brexit referendum, too, maybe we should start bettin on election outcomes)

LakieLady · 24/10/2020 18:52

@shamalidacdak

Biden will win by a landslide no doubt about it. Trump has disgusted enough Republicans to swing them over to the left. I also predict Trump and at least two of his kids in jail within 18 months. I can't fucking wait!
I'd love to see the orange one go to prison, that would be party time in our house!
BlueThistles · 24/10/2020 18:55

I think it's going to be very close, so close that Trump will cry voter fraud, push a legal challenge and his now majority conservative supreme court will call it for Trump"

to be fair.. this isn't a mantra unique to his party ... 🌺

I’m just countering your assertion that China will be a world superpower and that the US is on track to becoming a third-world country under Trump.

These are ridiculous assertions that you can’t defend.

I never said USA #1 (I mean, I’m an American expat ... ) but if you had money to invest, you’d invest it in the world’s largest economy, would you not?

As I said, I lived in China, and even Chinese don’t want to invest there!

he could take the Clintons and the Bidens with him 🌺

If i was in the us, i would abstain. Couldn't vote for biden after watching that video online that someone's made full of clips of him making very, very young girls very uncomfortable. Stroking them, touching, kissing their hair, saying deeply inappropriate things while the children are stuck in front of the camera with that dirty old man, unable to do anything about it or make a scene. Disgusting.

HeronLanyon · 24/10/2020 19:01

Praying he doesn’t. More US pundits over the last week or so are saying it’s looking as though he won’t. But After 2016 I darent assume.
I have champagne - a Very special bottle which I haven’t wanted to open for some years. It is being chilled. (I have back up in case it is no longer good).

MagicoRomantico · 24/10/2020 19:06

So in other words you can't name a single metric where USA is number one in the world apart from military might, HelloToMyKitty.
Most people incarcerated per capita doesn't count....I mean positive metrics.
Surprising 👀

A country of 300 million and these septuagenarians are the best they could muster up. Says it all
HoldMyLobster · 24/10/2020 19:14

@tobee

People vote for a candidate not against another one.
I recently voted against Trump and Susan Collins.

As I’m in a state with ranked choice voting I was delighted to rank Collins last.

Heatherjayne1972 · 24/10/2020 19:17

He’s very popular with the religious people in the USA. If some of my fb contacts are anything to go by
They’re praying for trump to win as they feel he’s the only hope for America

HoldMyLobster · 24/10/2020 19:19

@MrsGRamsay

Unfortunately, I think he may win because of voter apathy when faced with long queues. COVID restrictions have made voting more difficult plus having difficulty in employing cleared 'invigilators' in some States.

States have different verification processes to check ID - fair enough, not everyone will have a Driver's Licence or passport - but leaves more open to fraud.

Funny that Trump has ranted on about being against postal votes (because he wants people to be put off by the queues) yet has registered one for himself.

Long queues are a disadvantage for Trump in this election because so many more votes for Biden have been cast absentee already.

A hurricane on voting day would be ideal.

Which shows religion is bullshit and 'religious people are hypocrites/fakers

I’m not here to assert that America’s #1.

I’m here to push back against your ridiculous assertion that the US is going to become a third-world country under Trump. And China (have you even ever been?) will be some sort of superpower.

Wages for low-income Americans improved under Trump and he was one of the few politicians willing to tackle the trade imbalance with China. I think these are good achievements that he hasn’t actually done enough to promote.

JojoLapin · 24/10/2020 19:31

I will be hugely surprised if he isn’t re-elected. It is tragic beyond words to witness such dumbing down... in the US for certain, but here too.

HoldMyLobster · 24/10/2020 19:34

@BlueThistles

Why would his supporters turn against him ? have Biden supporters or Clinton supporters turned against them? of course not.. like it or loathe it ... people vote for whoever best represents their needs .. maybe you need to question why people support him and not other parties. 🌺
I’ve talked to some friends who voted for him last time but not this time.

One was curious about the whole idea of shaking up government. He’s horrified by what’s actually happened and his exact words were “I won’t be making that mistake again.” He’s a farmer in Ohio which is a swing state.

Several others voted Republican last time because that’s what they’ve always done. They’re voting for Biden this time to get Trump out. They’re horrified by many things he’s done. They’ll probably go back to voting republican in future.

Several friends are voting against him this time based on his record of what he’s done while in power, whereas last time they voted for him based on his promises and supposed business acumen.Their eyes have been well and truly opened.

One friend in the army won’t vote for him again because of the way Trump repeatedly betrays his country.

None of my friends in healthcare are voting for him again having seen his response to COVID.

Friends in construction are voting against him because his tariffs and protectionism have made building and property development so expensive.

DH’s boss is sitting out this vote - he needs the economy to start recovering and that’s only happening in the states that are getting COVID under control despite Trump. He can’t bring himself to vote for either whereas last time he voted for Trump. He was a millionaire a year ago and expects to become one again under a Biden presidency.

I know very few women voting for him this time around. Not surprising really.

HoldMyLobster · 24/10/2020 19:36

I can’t think of any friends who’ve said they’ll be voting for Trump this time who voted against him last time.

Parker231 · 24/10/2020 19:51

@HoldMyLobster - makes me feel a little more positive - thank you

HoldMyLobster's answers was great. I just want to add on that this turning against happens. A lot - that's why midterm senate/house changes aren't that unusual. I remember the backlash against George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, though the latter wasn't enough to lose.

If i was in the us, i would abstain. Couldn't vote for biden

I think that's a perfectly reasonable position; however, while there are really only two who have much of a chance for many reasons - there are more than two candidates. How many depends on the state, but most have at least 4, with Libertarians and Greens being the largest 'third parties' (and the only ones on enough states that they could technically get in, even it's really unlikely).

catchabreak2020 · 24/10/2020 20:09

Many die hard republicans are speaking out against Trump, citing country over party. Some of them such as Mitt Romney only state they won’t vote for him and not that they’re voting Biden. Not that it’ll make much difference in his care. But others such as Patti Davis and Cindy McCain have supported Biden. However I’m not sure what difference it will make. I hope that Trump doesn’t get in as its undeniable once you consider everything that he’s a much worse option and morally bankrupt.

And the Lincoln Project people of course. Loving their work.

I really hope that Trump doesn't get in, he is appalling in every way, but I was listening to something that suggested many of his supporters are not taking part in the polls or not answering truthfully "shy voters" I hope thats not true
