Mystified by tiny gussets. Is there - is there something wrong with my undercarriage?

Never been able to understand how anyone could bear to wear thong-type pants. I've always just thought -surely they must ride up and get into - the bit you don't want interfered with by your clothing??? Never understood it.

Anyhow, I sent for some M&S pants. Look like normal pants. Nice soft fabric. Comfy. Put them on, head out for the day. And -- oh dear, turns out they have a mystifyingly narrow gusset with the consequences I would think were entirely predictable. Not comfy after all! Much hitching down required Grin And there wasn't even a warning!!!

Just - why?

Have I got a weird-shaped fanny? Is it unusually lacking in firmness? Is it in the wrong place?? How does anyone wear these things??

I've been buying Tesco shirts style ones for a while now, no gusset issues but an unfortunate (vertical) fold in the fabric at the front which would be solved by the reinforced bit being further forward in the actual right place so still far from perfect. Comfy though and fine as long as I wear jeans rather than leggings if you catch my drift Blush

Weirdfan · 20/10/2020 16:50

shorts style, not shirts Smile

1Morewineplease · 20/10/2020 16:54

@SweetPetrichor

Sloggi full briefs are the way to go. In fact, the gusset is so wide it’s almost too big for sanitary pads!
I'm with you!
MitziK · 20/10/2020 16:56

@ovener

Re. the gusset position, I find when I'm pregnant my belly shifts everything and the gusset becomes too far back. Maybe the answer is pants that are lower cut at the front if you have any sort of belly, as most people do. I would suggest maternity ones but they're so much more expensive!
Christ, no.

The last thing anybody with a post baby overhang or section scar needs is to have the entire area debrided on a fucking daily basis.

Eddielzzard · 20/10/2020 16:56

Just bought a pair of Sloggi hipster cotton briefs in a larger size because of this thread. Feeling hopeful for the future

ScatteredMama82 · 20/10/2020 16:56

Sorry but every time I see this thread in my 'trending now' tab, I read it as 'mystified by tiny guests'. I'm picturing someone bewildered by an influx of borrowers in their house Grin

IShouldntPostBut · 20/10/2020 17:01

@osprey24

How do you know what size to buy, waist size or something else? and can you get them without the handy acsess hole?
The handy access hole can be sewn shut!
MrsBobDylan · 20/10/2020 17:19

Men got trousers, flat shoes and carte Blanche to be hairy. We got skirts, high heels and an Epilady. And tiny gussets. Men even get the comfy pants ffs.

It is a giant male conspiracy to hold women back in my opinion.

MrsBobDylan · 20/10/2020 17:21

I had a sore flap yesterday because of uncontrollable knicker elastic Sad

LakieLady · 20/10/2020 17:22

@Marcipex

I always think that the double-thickness bit is in the wrong place 🤔
I have that trouble. It's almost as though some of my bits are too far forward.

I don't find the average gusset too narrow though. I think you're all bandy legged!

MrsBobDylan · 20/10/2020 17:23

And it stopped me engaging in lunchtime sex with dh - at least someone male suffered as a result of my poorly designed knickers.

CherryValanc · 20/10/2020 17:23

@TildaKauskumholm

Given the way M&S have given away the rights of women and girls to have single sex changing rooms, perhap these tiny flimsy knickers are not actually meant for women?
Surely a narrow flimsy gusset is even more unsuitable if there's a pair of testicles and a penis to contain!!

It would look like Dumbo in a blindfold.

QueenPaws · 20/10/2020 17:26

I had a pair that looked comfy, said they were designed for sports etc. Put them on, seemed fine. Got on my horse. Me "WTF?! OW"
Seam straight up the middle. Really?!
They went in the bin

N0tthe0nlyfruit · 20/10/2020 17:30

@LakieLady aha! This has bothered me for years. Why is the gusset bit not aligning with my bits? For years the gusset was too far back. Change of pain meds caused a 10lb weight gain and hey presto, gusset is now aligned! Confused

longtompot · 20/10/2020 17:32

@Titterofwit

Even more mystifying is that the lighter colour ones in your link seem to have different dimensions to the black ones.
I was just going to say the same thing. The 'Opaline(cream)' look much more substantial than the black ones Hmm
CherryValanc · 20/10/2020 17:32

I may be putting too much thought into this, but I feel I should say that o realise it wouldn't look like Dumbo in a blindfold. The strip of material is going the wrong way..I just can't think of a better analogy.

LakieLady · 20/10/2020 17:33

@madcatladyforever

I don't like waist high briefs even though I'm late 50's so I get low rise shorts, they are very comfortable, I cannot abide pants that ride up.
I think my hips and arse must be a weird shape. Low rise shorts or bikini style knickers slip down (to the point where I once found my knickers round my ankles while dancing at a party).

High rise stay just where they are most comfortable.

EhUp · 20/10/2020 17:36

Knickers is the one clothing item that vanity sizing has not made bigger in the past 25 years!

I was always a UK 12 in my teens/20s and now find myself in a 10 (and occasionally even an 8) despite being a similar size/weight as I was then. Knickers however I still always buy a 12 (or a 14 if they particularly insubstantial!) Grin

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/10/2020 17:36

After years of Wedgie-pants from M&S (aka polo neck knickers) I have transferred my allegiance to Tesco pants. No wedges and I get clubcard points!

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/10/2020 17:40

My vagina is clearly abnormal because the gusset is always too far back. Means I need the wide sanitary towels plus wings to make sure I don’t make a mess.

LakieLady · 20/10/2020 17:41

@BigusBumus

I have extensively researched gusset width and i can tell you that THESE ones from Tu at Sainsbury's are perfect for holding a sanitary pad. Although you do have to put it slightly forward of the gusset, don't know why...
They're the ones I buy! Except I haven't bought any for ages, because I mostly wear black underwear and they don't do an all-black multipack any more, the fuckers.

Although I have some of the wonderful anti-chub rub knickers from the Big Bloomer Co, they are perfect under dresses on hot days and divinely comfortable.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 20/10/2020 17:45

@LavenderBucket

The gusset to sanitary pad ratio is completely off. I reckon knicker makers should get together with sanitary pad makers and work through their measurements. Maybe meet in the middle....
This with bells on

I'm sure the biggest reason I leak is because the pad is too big for the knicker

thenightsky · 20/10/2020 18:20

They are amazing aren't they? I love my big bloomers anti-chub rub for summer. I've also found these which are cheaper.

MrsBobDylan · 20/10/2020 18:39

I'm getting a bit weak with laughter. I can't even visually the 'dumbo in a blindfold' effect or 'polo neck knickers' without feeling giddy. Keep 'em coming...

StillMedusa · 20/10/2020 18:49

This HAS to go in classics please!!! Grin
Men's trunk style boxers are MUCH comfier than any womens..including womens shorts IMO as they are still skimpy. I've given up M+S pants for good..
