Mystified by tiny gussets. Is there - is there something wrong with my undercarriage?

Never been able to understand how anyone could bear to wear thong-type pants. I've always just thought -surely they must ride up and get into - the bit you don't want interfered with by your clothing??? Never understood it.

Anyhow, I sent for some M&S pants. Look like normal pants. Nice soft fabric. Comfy. Put them on, head out for the day. And -- oh dear, turns out they have a mystifyingly narrow gusset with the consequences I would think were entirely predictable. Not comfy after all! Much hitching down required Grin And there wasn't even a warning!!!

Just - why?

Have I got a weird-shaped fanny? Is it unusually lacking in firmness? Is it in the wrong place?? How does anyone wear these things??

Viscose is a natural fabric

So is tweed but I don't want a pair of undercrackers made out of that either. As a PP says, cotton with a bit of elastane is the way to go.

stackemhigh · 21/10/2020 11:38

I never knew viscose is natural. Will google, but what is it?

Facelikearustytractor · 21/10/2020 11:42

My foof is clinically obese, but the rest of me is normal weight. It got fat like the rest of me during pregnancy and didn't shrink down again. I blame having kids, they've ruined me!

The gusset does look small in the pic though.

Never understood elastic around the leg holes either. That's a recipe for a bit of chaffing.

I still have a couple of pairs of my lovely tiny size 8 brazilian style pretty knickers amongst my knackered old plain sporty size 14 shorts. I look at them and wonder how the fuck I used to fit in them and still manage to eat three meals a day. Ageing is cruel!

Enoughnowstop · 21/10/2020 11:49

Try these knickers, OP. They’re like wearing actual air. Have not looked back.

They look brilliant enoughnow. I wish more undies were modelled properly, like those ones are, too.

Well I have just spent quite a long time scrutinising all the tiny gussets on the marks and spencers webpage. They all appear to be just as tiny as the marks and spencers pants I already own. However, kudos to them for not airbrushing their models who now look like an actual woman that I might actually meet. I suppose I shall have to carry on with the tiny gussets just to lend them my support.

listsandbudgets · 21/10/2020 17:45

YANBU OP I've rejected a number of pairs over the year for the same reason.

I keep reading this thread title as "Mystified by tiny guests is there something wrong with my undercarriage?". I did expect the thread to be about something else altogether!!

Quite sad to see that size 12 is considered plus size but otherwise those look amazing!

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 21/10/2020 18:54

As a seamstress I can tell you all that the gusset is for shaping purposes so that the fabric lies flat and the double layer bit was originally just so that there are no exposed seams on the inside and nothing to do with the positioning of our vulvas! It’s a design that does need updating though now that gussets are also used to add a natural layer into synthetic pants.

There’s no excuses for super narrow gussets.

Lockdownlumpy · 21/10/2020 19:00

I wear asda own high leg cotton knickers that come in a multipack. Gussets are adequately wide Grin

Lockdownlumpy · 21/10/2020 19:07

In the name of science, I've just done some gusset comparison.
Narrowest - M+S
Joint second (slightly wider) TU and Debenhams
By far the widest (about 1.5cm wider than m+s) Asda George

And thanks to this post I now know why I never wear my M+S knickers, although I wear their bras every day. Envy

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Hold me closer tiny gusset...
😂
Prancingponies · 21/10/2020 19:36

Another who has switched to men's trunks. You can buy them without the 'nice' vent at the front. So much more comfortable. I'm out in the fields a lot as I have horses, and wegies when you're wading through mud is no fun at all!

AnotherAnotherAnother · 21/10/2020 20:27

So glad I found this thread and I'm not the only one who thought I had a particularly wide undercarriage...I swear I never used to have this problem though - have gussets narrowed in the last decade??

candycane222 · 21/10/2020 23:16

Ooh good work lumpy . So ASDA give you an extra 1.5 cm!! That puts M&S properly to shame.

Tempted to tweet all the main brands and ask them to come out with their dimensions, and justify anything less than asda's creditable coverage.

Some people have longer pubic bones which pull underwear into strange places. I have high hips and they can do that as they don't seem to realise that one can be long and not large everywhere else. Also the shape of your vulva can dictate how the pants sit - outies tend to hold the gusset into place better.

Knickers are made for slim models with short hips and then they scale them up instead of adjusting for women shaped in other ways.

But they're not cotton! I would be, as Trinny or Susannah once put it, 'sweating like a pig in that polyester'.Grin

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 22/10/2020 00:38

I can no way wear thongs without hitching. Never could.

Outies?

StarlightLady · 22/10/2020 07:44

To reiterate, M&S sizing on ther Brazillians suit me and my body shape, including the gusset. I do not need anything larger. An excess of fabric is not comfortable either.

The sizing of all clothes varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. It is annoying and goes beyond knickers. I have jeans that fit well with up to 2 sizes difference.

But let’s not jump to the conclusion that the likes of M&S have it wrong.

I honestly thought the same. Have worn M&S or sloggi cotton knockers for 50 years. These were a game changer for me! All I can say is buy a pair and see if they work for you.

Enoughnowstop · 22/10/2020 13:02

Smile. Knockers! Knickers, obviously!

BreconBeelzeBubbered · 22/10/2020 13:12

I have some decently wide ones from Morrisons. Not the multipack, haven't tried those, but a set of two knickers on a hanger. Nice and stretchy too.

WooMaWang · 22/10/2020 13:43

@2bazookas

Tiny gussets must be for those skinny women who when they're standing up legs together, you can see a little gap at the top.
Wouldn’t work. You’d need the really thin women with no gap because they’ll be the only people who could be covered by a narrow gusset. If there’s a gap if any description, their pelvis will be too wide.

I hate buying pants. They’re always so uncomfortable. It’s worse now I’ve had a cesarean because so many pants have their elastic exactly where the scar is. You’d think it was an unusual place for women to have a bloody great scar from how hard it can be to buy pants. The alternative seems to mostly be huge pants that come up to my rib cage.

Even if I can navigate that issue, there will be some issue relating to the design of the gusset. So many narrow gussets and/or weirdly placed seams and/or oddly placed lace. I do not want to be chafed down there because pants seem to be designed by people with no grasp of human anatomy.

I once bought a pair of shorts style pants, thinking it might help. Nope. They had a tiny, diamond shaped but if material sewn over where the seams met. It in no way protected my undercarriage from the effects of those massive seams.

Sizing up doesn’t really help.

I also don’t understand why many pants size scales go from
so tiny that they will always give you a wedgie to so large the whole family could camp in them.

SunshineCake · 22/10/2020 13:53

I decided M&S pants in a pack weren't worth the money or the trip to the shop so I picked some up in Asda today. Five pack, black and white mix, midis. I have opened them and they are huge [sigh]. I didn't want granny pants but I can't be bothered to take them back. They are about twice the size of Marks and Spencer's midis.
