Mystified by tiny gussets. Is there - is there something wrong with my undercarriage?

Never been able to understand how anyone could bear to wear thong-type pants. I've always just thought -surely they must ride up and get into - the bit you don't want interfered with by your clothing??? Never understood it.

Anyhow, I sent for some M&S pants. Look like normal pants. Nice soft fabric. Comfy. Put them on, head out for the day. And -- oh dear, turns out they have a mystifyingly narrow gusset with the consequences I would think were entirely predictable. Not comfy after all! Much hitching down required Grin And there wasn't even a warning!!!

Just - why?

Have I got a weird-shaped fanny? Is it unusually lacking in firmness? Is it in the wrong place?? How does anyone wear these things??

@Meruem

Full briefs, you'll never look back!
I agree. The only things that don't ride up and disappear up somewhere in an uncomfortable clump, I find.
SlopesOff · 20/10/2020 15:29

@fourquenelles

Tesco's full briefs in packs of 5. I have a drawer full of black ones and they are as comfie as Sloggis but much much cheaper. I have an enormous arse and they cover that and the apron belly completely.
I thought I had found some good ones with the Tesco range. They were crap, the elastic pulled away at the joins while the arse was rising up and the fabric skewed to one side in the wash. I had several packs, all similar and pretty much all rubbish. Trying a smaller size meant that the thin, scimpy elastic cut in to me.

Sloggi - even buying a couple of sizes up I couldn't get them on, maybe they were rejects/wrongly labelled. Didn't like the look of them much anyway. Not like they used to be, at all.

Gusset is one of the greatest words in the English language. Fact.

😂😂😂

StuckInTheMiddleWithTwo · 20/10/2020 15:43

Disturbingly enough, my two year old also seems to have this problem with her M & S toddler pants! Seriously considering just buying her boy's pants. It's ridiculous, the extent to which women are expected to put aesthetics over function, even from toddlerhood.

likeamillpond · 20/10/2020 15:44

I think it's an M & S thing.
I bought a red one piece swimsuit from them a couple of years ago.
The gusset was indecently narrow.
I felt so self conscious
I never wore it in the end.

CherryValanc · 20/10/2020 15:56

@Sunnydaysstillhere

They were designed especially with Covid in mind... Keeps your flaps socially distanced. One wedged to the left and one to the right... Gusset in-between..
Grin That's so gross, but oh so very true. It's not a good look! is it, You wouldn' want a Marilyn Monroe moment why you had your flaps forced into social distancing by a gusset would you!

Don't encounter this with many knickers, but certainly have encountered it. I accidentally bought a pair of pants whose gusset was about 3cm (I actually measured)

You might think it was one of those 'invisible women' data bias, but surely that would mean that gussets would be bigger. So I don't know why it's a thing - where are they getting the measurements from!!!?

dollybird · 20/10/2020 16:01

Doesn't the bulgy bit at the front of men's boxers feel lumpy? I only wear midi's these days, and my dead cheap plain Sainsbury's ones are great. Used to wear thongs, but as I got older I always felt like my bum was jiggling around even though it's not that big, just less firm than it used to be I suppose 🤣

My DGD6 is extremely slim, but her bum is barely covered by girls’ briefs, and they are cut so narrow between the legs that they rub her and make her sore. Even buying a larger size doesn’t help, as they are too loose round the top but just as skimpy in the gusset. We tried several different makes, all the same problem. The only comfortable pants she has are shorts.
candycane222 · 20/10/2020 16:06

That's ridiculous about kids' pants too Angry I hope it is just some cheapskate move by the factory to squeeze more pairs out of a bolt of cloth, rather than trying to make toddler girls show a bit more leg - which is frankly an absolutely horrifying idea.

Proper briefs are the way forward, BUT they need elastic around the leg bit (not just slinky seamless / unfinished material) so that they don’t ride up and annoy your foo foo 😆. I spend AGES checking the internet pics to make sure they have some elastic. They’re not all granny pants, some are sheer Freya numbers which are pretty nice.

Fluffybutter · 20/10/2020 16:09

When your knickers go from waist to knee, I can promise you that there is no VPL . . .
I suppose but you also don’t get one with a gimp suit but think I’ll pass on that

notalwaysalondoner · 20/10/2020 16:11

I have a particular M&S style I bulk buy that don’t ride up and have a mid size gusset. They are cotton so don’t make my backside itchy when I sit for ages unlike nylon and they have lace at the waist so are relatively pretty too.

I’ve only worn thongs a few times in my life and I think almost entirely in the bedroom. Never understand why you’d want to wear one all day, I find them so uncomfy.

AdoraBell · 20/10/2020 16:16

Full briefs here too, but teen DDs 🤦‍♀️ I don’t know how they find the fecking cheese cutters wearable.

Jocasta2018 · 20/10/2020 16:19

@Stillinsistsheseestheghosts

Which brand can you recommend as a lot of them have the penis flap at the front which isn't ideal....??

2bazookas · 20/10/2020 16:23

Tiny gussets must be for those skinny women who when they're standing up legs together, you can see a little gap at the top.

SunshineCake · 20/10/2020 16:27

Another saying me too for some of these issues.

I'd suggest we tweet M & S but we all know they are too arrogant to listen SadAngry.

MrsClatterbuck · 20/10/2020 16:29

I bought a couple of years back I bought knickers from Damart that my granny would have been proud of. Think old fashioned bloomers but instead of being loose are tight fitting. Good for chafing. Would be good under trousers for winter to keep warm. You might not want to be caught wearing them when being admitted to A&ESmile but are very comfortable.
They are not dissimilar to those ones being advertised on TV for men atm.

2bazookas · 20/10/2020 16:32

I stopped buying Marks and Spencer pants after they started making the gussets too narrow.

In the 1950s my mother used to wear gorgeous silky soft French knickers with wide loose legs, wish I could find any as good. Even French knickers are badly cut now.
MrsClatterbuck · 20/10/2020 16:35

I bought them from Damart but the brand was Sloggi.

Benjispruce2 · 20/10/2020 16:35

I’ve always bought knickers a size up but lately even they’re too small even though I’m the same size and weight. What’s that all about?

Benjispruce2 · 20/10/2020 16:38

I also agree with the pp that mentioned gussets being too far back.

TildaKauskumholm · 20/10/2020 16:41

Given the way M&S have given away the rights of women and girls to have single sex changing rooms, perhap these tiny flimsy knickers are not actually meant for women?

Seasidegrandma · 20/10/2020 16:43

Read some of the replies, re-read the title to see it said gussets not guests!

NW2SW · 20/10/2020 16:45

Massive Primark high legs are the only ones I get on with. Not cotton but so comfy and surprisingly last. I'd buy better brand if I could find the right cut.

CrowleysBentley · 20/10/2020 16:46

Just get big pants. Sloggi maxi pants, they're cotton, they keep everything contained, they are very comfortable, wide enough for pads, and they keep your bum warm. They last forever too.
