Mystified by tiny gussets. Is there - is there something wrong with my undercarriage?

Never been able to understand how anyone could bear to wear thong-type pants. I've always just thought -surely they must ride up and get into - the bit you don't want interfered with by your clothing??? Never understood it.

Anyhow, I sent for some M&S pants. Look like normal pants. Nice soft fabric. Comfy. Put them on, head out for the day. And -- oh dear, turns out they have a mystifyingly narrow gusset with the consequences I would think were entirely predictable. Not comfy after all! Much hitching down required Grin And there wasn't even a warning!!!

Just - why?

Have I got a weird-shaped fanny? Is it unusually lacking in firmness? Is it in the wrong place?? How does anyone wear these things??

@Marcipex

I always think that the double-thickness bit is in the wrong place 🤔
yes! It’s more at my arse area!

OP yanbu, there’s nothing better than a good wide gusset

lekkerkroketje · 20/10/2020 14:55

@toconclude I went up a size vs what I'd buy in the ladies and they seem ok, although a bit loose on the waist. They're dead stretchy. I have cyclists thighs so chunky rather than flabby. In general I'd be a 10-12 in a skirt but a 16-18 in skinny jeans to get them over my thighs and arse and the large mens fit fine if that helps.

inappropriateraspberry · 20/10/2020 14:56

I want a pair of basic knickers with the gusset in the right place and enough fabric at the back to cover my bum without creeping into the crack!
I second teen san towels. I find normal ones so wide and uncomfortable. Have tried a few teen brands and they are definitely a better fit. Who wants a nappy between their legs?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 20/10/2020 14:57

Thongs and similar tiny gussets end uo, as you say, in the crack of your bum and rubbing against your f*nny entrance.

They are unhygienic, uncomfortable and unspeakably awful.

Big knickers are the way to go.

frewer · 20/10/2020 14:58

Fourquenelles I stocked up on those a few years back when the colours were mixed black and nude beige. I have a lot of beige to get through.

It's surprising how the sizing differs from pack to pack and the black ones are stretchier.

nocoolnamesleft · 20/10/2020 14:59

Sloggi full briefs. You'll never go back. Not at all sexy, but really comfortable, no riding up, decent width gusset.

Reminds me of this Grin

@Fluffybutter

I’ve worn thongs since about 15 . Atleast the string bit of the thong is meant to be between your arse cheeks rather than big pants which escape up their uninvited . You do get used to them . Hate vpl so it’s thong or nothing ! The ones that claim to be “invisible” are very much not .
When your knickers go from waist to knee, I can promise you that there is no VPL . . .
BertieBotts · 20/10/2020 15:04

Pants used to fit me fine until I was about 27. Then despite not putting on any significant amount of weight it seems like my fanny has widened Confused

ancientgran · 20/10/2020 15:04

I buy a multi pack from Sainsbury's, they seem fine in the gusset department.

LauraMipsum · 20/10/2020 15:04

Wasn't it M&S who were advertising last Christmas that what women really wanted for Christmas was "fancy little knickers"?

Customer feedback M&S, we want HUGE PANTS.

Cadent · 20/10/2020 15:05

@LauraMipsum yes because male titillation is more important than women’s comfort!

ancientgran · 20/10/2020 15:06

Sloggi full briefs. You'll never go back. Not at all sexy, but really comfortable, no riding up, decent width gusset. I used to buy Sloggi but the quality really dipped. Maybe I should give them another chance, I used to really like Sloggi.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 20/10/2020 15:07

I switched from M&S boy shorts to Sainsbury's shorts, about 10 years ago

Me too - the Sainsbury's ones are excellent!

I occasionally wear thongs but, as PPs have said, at least the string is supposed to go up your arse crack, so it's designed to be thin. I can't feel them but they sure as hell aren't suitable for riding a horse in, hence the boy shorts.

On the gusset front, yes they're always in the wrong damn place. Have the people who design these things even met a woman or have even the vaguest idea where a fanjo is on a human body?

And YY to the sizing of sanitary towels - I could never bear them as not only were they wider than could ever be necessary (I mean, look at a woman when she's standing. Does there LOOK like there's a lot of space to spare there?) but they were always so long. Either they almost reached my belly button or I felt like I had half a mattress up my arse crack, crinkling away. At least the thong was SUPPOSED to be there.

nibdedibble · 20/10/2020 15:08

I’ve never found a gusset that’s forward enough for me. I don’t think I’m particularly weirdly configured, I mean I haven’t had any complaints.

nibdedibble · 20/10/2020 15:09

(Is this the thread on which to mention....bleaching?)

ultimatebadass · 20/10/2020 15:09

its because they are high leg. Design fault. I only wear full large briefs now, so comfy

Artforartssake · 20/10/2020 15:10

This should be in the "wtf parenting moments thread" but I was once in a café abroad with my 2 year old DD having lunch, and there was a woman sitting with her back to us, on a bench at the table directly ahead, whose thong was hanging out the top of her jeans. It had an enticing ruby jewel type thing with sequins sewn on to the bit where the gusset and waistband met. I had to physically restrain my toddler from running over and giving it an enthusiastic pluck.

Notarealmum · 20/10/2020 15:12

Personally, I always find M&S knickers to be a bit narrow in the gusset - I’d been slightly concerned the problem was with my anatomy.....

grassisjeweled · 20/10/2020 15:17

HATE the word gusset

(shiver)

jrb123 · 20/10/2020 15:19

I have found that American knickers have much wider gussets than UK ones. TK Maxx usually have a good supply of them - that's where I buy mine these days and life is much more comfortable now!

SlopesOff · 20/10/2020 15:21

@BigusBumus

I have extensively researched gusset width and i can tell you that THESE ones from Tu at Sainsbury's are perfect for holding a sanitary pad. Although you do have to put it slightly forward of the gusset, don't know why...
That is the elastic top that has so little elastic in that the whole thing slides down, it has no grip and appears on many brands and styles.

In the 90's M&S made some really good knickers with that kind of top, it stayed up and the bum stayed at bum level, not under your armpits. Similar ones now are rubbish, the elastic is not proper elastic and something has gone wrong with the cheek covering aspect because it starts off covering and after a few steps is armpit height.

20mum · 20/10/2020 15:22

Men's cotton jersey close fitting boxers.

candycane222 · 20/10/2020 15:24

OMG that Boohoo body - I remember that too. Brings tears to the eyes in more ways than one!

I wear full briefs, not sure how I ever managed to wear bikini briefs or thongs.
Last week I put a pair of normal pants on under leggings and they were awful, I ended up taking them off and going commando 😁😬
