This obsession with blue eyes! Anyone else?

Honestly, I know it's a minor thing but it's really starting to annoy me! 🤣

Dh and I both have hazel eyes. We are white but more olivey skin (not that it matters!) Ds is the spitting image of me as a baby and his eyes are still that changeable very dark blue/brown colour, but looks dark in most lights. He has basically the same eyes I did as a baby and most of the time they look hazel, but I guess they haven't quite set yet. Mine didn't set until 1. He is 9 months. (Other babies we know with blue eyed parents have proper blue eyes - ds has never looked very blue!) Also neither DH or myself are blue!!

Pil are both blue and hazel eyed and mil is the blue eyed one and is obsessed that our baby will have blue eyes! Every time she visits (maybe 6 or 7 times now) it's "his eyes look blue! Are they blue?" Then looks disappointed when we say no. I'm not kidding. Every time she comes in! I actually have an intake of breath now. She then makes the odd comment of "well they look blue to me." as if I'm making it up. Confused

I actually find it quite offensive. Dark eyes are attractive you know! Her son has them! And ds has my eyes!
She even made some comment about how her other son has blue eyes and how beautiful they are.

Anyone else have people like this? Blue eyes are no nicer than dark eyes. Hazel eyes are beautiful thank you very much!

@Bluesheep8

I don't think fizzygreenwater was rude though. That eye colour is exactly what I'd expect to see on a thread about blue eyes. It's a photo of blue eyes.
Which are beautiful nonetheless and clearly something that PP likes about herself? Perhaps I’m projecting a little here but I generally have very low self esteem and I like very little about myself, other than my green eyes which have always been one thing that I do like. If I were to post a picture of them, even if it were on a thread about green eyes, someone responded with “those just look like standard be nice to me” I probably would find it a little insensitive. I just see nothing wrong with building each other up a little. Most of my family have blue eyes yet I’d still say PPs are quite unique and very vibrant in colour. You can get “dull” blue that colour are certainly something I think most people would take notice of.
Frogsandsheep · 15/08/2020 16:20

My dc and I all have very big bright blue eyes and they have been commented on quite a lot by people. It might be because of the size as well as the colour though.

bluesoup1 · 15/08/2020 16:22

Gotta say I'm surprised by how many people don't seem to realise that eye colour preference is a "thing." Whether that be blue brown green or whatever else.

I have hazel eyes myself and have always been fine with them but I certainly remember as a teen blue eyes were more "desireable" and a lot of my brown/hazel eye coloured friends would say how they wish they had blue / green eyes.
I even recall quite a few girls at my school would wear coloured contact lenses. And I've often heard mums talking about how they hope their babies eyes stay blue.

So while I don't agree blue is "nicer" (I'm a sucker for dark eyes myself and dark features generally) I'm also very aware that blue eyes are often favoured. I would imagine the sales of blue contact lenses are much higher than brown.

FizzyGreenWater · 15/08/2020 16:25

No, not ‘obtuse’ either. Just saying what I thought. You can’t help your eyes! It’s not something to either be proud or sensitive about surely?!

But I shall leave the thread there, it’s a fairly interesting discussion but not if conducted via much strange stealth boasting about how unusual everyone’s eyes are!

FizzyGreenWater · 15/08/2020 16:29

Change - I do see your point about self esteem and being tied up with appearance yes, very much so.

But the thread was about perception of eye colour so it’s of interest to discuss how subjective that is, how it does vary person to person etc. That you’d see that eye shade as bright blue while to another person they would be pegged as grey blue is part of the discussion.

No use having a discussion of that type if as soon as someone makes a different observation, suddenly odd a personal insult. It should be obvious that it isn’t.

bloodynamechangethe3rd · 16/08/2020 01:41

Both my daughters have piercing ice blue eyes, my youngest son has dark chocolate brown, my eldest son has the most AMAZING hazel eyes, they’re like that tigers eye stone, greeny outer rim with an orangey iris, honestly I’ve never seen another person with eyes that colour, beautiful brown eyes.
And weirdly I love that mid colour that baby’s have when they’re like muddy denim blue, not blue and not brown, I’m between. Stunning.

emilybrontescorsett · 16/08/2020 07:44

Dh has different coloured eyes, it's extremely rare.

Alabamawhirly1 · 16/08/2020 09:30

I don't think people like blue eyes because they're rare. As many have pointed out, in the UK they're not rare.
Green are rarer.

But at the risk at offending all the green eye havers and lovers - green eyes are still usually a bit dull and you can't really see they're not browm unless you really look. I'm sure some people have real emerald green eyes - which would look very striking, but I've never seen them.

Blue eyes are usually very bright and look so distinct from brown/hazel/green. So they stand out and look different. You just notice them more and they make the eyes stand out more. So people think they look more attractive and/or special.

Obv that's not to say all blue eyes are bright and standout. Dhs are so dull and murky you wouldn't notice they are blue unless you looked. I'm just saying lots of blue eyes are very bright and noticeable, which is why I think people like them.

GhostCurry · 16/08/2020 10:00

I agree Alabama.

Silversun83 · 16/08/2020 14:06

I also find the subject of eye colour genetics fascinating and admittedly I am obsessed with the eye colour of my DCs.. Eldest started out with denim blue eyes which are now grey/green and youngest has always had incredibly blue eyes..

But this is mainly because both DH and I have really dark brown and so just assumed our DC would! Was surprised at DC1 but even more shocked with DC2 as thought statistically at least one should.. Our genes must be incredibly weak 😂

ILoveFood87 · 16/08/2020 22:01

My mum, sisters, brother, cousins, aunts uncles and nephew have blue eyes I never heard they were rare Confused I'm the rare one in my family with brown eyes

MulticolourMophead · 16/08/2020 22:06

My dad has one light brown eye and one dark brown eye. A lot of people miss it because I think they see it as a trick of the light. Not quite like say a blue and green eye.

Cailleach1 · 18/08/2020 10:10

ILoveFood, I think in some places you are the rare one. Or less common. I still remember two teachers in my secondary school who had brown eyes. Also, there was one person in my class at secondary school who had brown eyes. Nobody in my small primary school class.

Considering the simple genetics we were being taught at that time, I was puzzled at one cousin having brown eyes as both her parents had blue eyes. She was unusual too as all the rest of my extended family had blue eyes.

Van Morrison's 'Brown Eyed Girl' isn't a bad homage.

Both of my maternal DGP were from Italy...my DGG had green eyes/red hair...DGF had brown hair/crystal blue eyes...they had 3 DC with blue eyes, one with dark brown eyes and my DH with green eyes. 3 DC had very curly dark hair, 2DC had dark straight hair. The 3 DDs were very tall (5"8 , 5'8", 5'10) ( poor things had American size 10 women's feet) especially for their generation...(early 1920s and 30s) 2DS were of short stature(5"6).
I'm the only GC out of 11 with green eyes...my dad has dark brown eyes...genetics are very interesting
Pictures are of my 90 year old DM sparkling green eyes( in RL they are much greener)..We were having a picnic and I looked over at her and her eyes had me captivated! I guess the white pandemic mask made them really stand out

It's only because blue eyes are so rare.

They're the most common in the UK now.

MsPeachh · 13/08/2020 10:51

I do think there needs to be more love for other eye colours! I hear lots of people saying they don't like their "boring" brown eyes whereas I think it's wonderful getting lost in deep, dark brown eyes. They have a lovely warmth about them.

Me too.

When I see David Mitchel on TV I want to dive in. I'm not attracted to him or any other body part but those eyes.

Those look like blue eyes to me (and to AI).

Sweetpea1532 · 15/12/2025 05:41

@TidyCrow my DMs eyes are green
in real life. I suppose my phone camera shows them as blue, though.

TinselTina · 15/12/2025 12:24

TinselTina · 15/12/2025 12:24

What colour are these eyes ?

I have no idea, but they sure are gorgeous!
I suppose I'd say they are a dark greenish blue.

BengalBangle · 15/12/2025 19:42

I've always loved darker eyes: you can get lost in them.
I've got grey/blue eyes that I think look quite cold.
My daughters have blue/green eyes, which are rather beautiful.

Sweetpea1532 · 15/12/2025 19:48

They may be central heterochromic because of the brownish-golden circle around the iris.

Sweetpea1532 · 15/12/2025 19:49

The person may have central heterochromia because of the brownish-golden circle around the iris that blends into the green or blue. As
