This obsession with blue eyes! Anyone else?

Honestly, I know it's a minor thing but it's really starting to annoy me! 🤣

Dh and I both have hazel eyes. We are white but more olivey skin (not that it matters!) Ds is the spitting image of me as a baby and his eyes are still that changeable very dark blue/brown colour, but looks dark in most lights. He has basically the same eyes I did as a baby and most of the time they look hazel, but I guess they haven't quite set yet. Mine didn't set until 1. He is 9 months. (Other babies we know with blue eyed parents have proper blue eyes - ds has never looked very blue!) Also neither DH or myself are blue!!

Pil are both blue and hazel eyed and mil is the blue eyed one and is obsessed that our baby will have blue eyes! Every time she visits (maybe 6 or 7 times now) it's "his eyes look blue! Are they blue?" Then looks disappointed when we say no. I'm not kidding. Every time she comes in! I actually have an intake of breath now. She then makes the odd comment of "well they look blue to me." as if I'm making it up. Confused

I actually find it quite offensive. Dark eyes are attractive you know! Her son has them! And ds has my eyes!
She even made some comment about how her other son has blue eyes and how beautiful they are.

Anyone else have people like this? Blue eyes are no nicer than dark eyes. Hazel eyes are beautiful thank you very much!

I don't mind anymore

You should embrace it, I’ve always loved that Snow White type of beauty. Very classic imo. Envy

thanks to the Scandinavian genes the vast majority of people had blue eyes whatever their hair colour

Blue eyes originated from a mutation in a common ancestor around the Black Sea some 6,000 to 10,000 years ago. So blue eyes aren't necessarily inherited because of Scandanavian ancestry. Some Scandanavians don't have blue eyes. Some people have inherited brown eyes because of their Scandanavian ancestry. However, people from areas like Syria can have blue eyes which are inherited from the exact same ancestor as any other person with blue eyes. Also, as it is recessive, some people with brown eyes can also have have inherited an instruction for reduced melanin in their irises (or blue eyes) which you don't see but can be passed on to their children.

It does feel rather shallow to be thankful that your child has eyes of a certain colour. No colour is really 'nicer' than another. You can say you like a certain colour and then you see someone with a different eye colour who can take your breath away. How thankful we should be when our children's eyes are healthy and function well.

My dh has green eyes and they are lovely , much better than my pale blue boring eyes!
Only ds1 has inherited the green eyes.
I find genetics fascinating.

Bluesheep8 · 14/08/2020 13:49

*Although blue eyes and black hair

oof

Oof? What do you mean?

Today 07:08YourObedientServant

Oof as in that looks gorgeous/hot. I assume?*

I'll take it as a compliment then, I use Oof to mean something's not nice!

I had this with dd but DH & I are both blue eyed. She was born with very dark eyes and for months one of the overriding questions what what colour they'd end up. There's such a mix of colourings, especially in DH's family that she could have gone either way. Personally I think hazel eyes look beautiful but that's probably because most people in my family are blue eyed.

Want2beme · 14/08/2020 16:22

My DM and DS have got blue eyes. I've got green eyes. I like green eyes.

MondayYogurt · 14/08/2020 16:29

If he wants to work on Bake Off he may need blue eyes. Otherwise I'm sure it's fine and she'll calm down and obsess over some other thing.

carlablack · 14/08/2020 16:32

YANBU because it's such a minor detail that shouldn't even be mentioned. Everybody's beautiful in their own way.

...Though personally I'd looove my DD to have my DH's blue-green eyes!Grin

I just get sick of various people assuming my infidelity because my son has blue eyes. Both my husband and I are brown eyed, both have blue eyes siblings. I've literally had a "friend" (funnily enough, we don't talk) tell me it's impossible for my husband to be the father Hmm. So many people look at me and say "Oh his father must have blue eyes then"? Nope. And ffs did anyone listen in basic science lessons?

SerenityNowwwww · 14/08/2020 16:36

Of course not. In our family there are a few red haired siblings with one blonde and one black haired parent. Oh the jokes...🙄

We had the same, one almost black hair, one brown, one red, 2 strawberry blond, 2 blond (but went brown eventually), all mixed up age wise.

We all sort of look generically alike, well you can tell we are siblings anyway.

Parents both brown haired.

MulticolourMophead · 14/08/2020 16:48

@HoppingPavlova

MulticolourMophead “Blue eyed parents bb x bb can only have blue eyed offspring.”

Rubbish. As I said above, both DH and I have blue eyes. Our families have only had blue eyes, both sides, back several generations. We have one brown eyed child, others are blue. Child is definitely ours biologically.

I think you are using a simple primary school style schematic of genetics that’s not right for this.

I saw that you corrected yourself Grin

It looks like when you quote a post, the asterisks used for bold formatting, that indicate that you are quoting someone else, don't work, you only see the actual asterisks, and this is also the case now that I am quoting your post.

It would be helpful if when we are using the quote function, that any formatting is also retained, perhaps @MNHQ could take a look.

cherrybath · 14/08/2020 17:31

I have blue eyes, as do most of my family, but my husband has "cowpat" eyes (hazel), like my son. My other three blue eyed children always had far more compliments, though he is just as attractive. Personally I like hazel eyes.

Namechangerextraordinaire1 · 14/08/2020 17:32

My ex and I both gave blue eyes - his light blue and mine dark blue. Our dd has hazel eyes, whichcare the exact same colour as my niece and nephew's, do must be a throwback to a previous generation!

My df and I also have blue eyes, again his are light and mine dark, our 8 week old has gorgeous blue eyes sort of inbetween the two shades, although of course they could change. Df has dark hair and blue eyes and i love the combo so hoped she'd inherit that but has fair hair like me

TrixieMixie · 14/08/2020 17:38

Blue eyes are not rare. Sounds a bit borderline of her to go on about it so much. Makes me uneasy because of aryan connotations and why blue eyes, which are very rare among non-white people, would be considered superior.
The only time I have ever come across pro blue-eye prejudice is this: A management guru type person once came into our work and claimed studies had shown people with blue eyes were better leaders. Had to be pointed out to him this was racist.

EthelMerman · 14/08/2020 17:41

My dad had hazel eyes, mum’s are grey-blue. OH & me have blue eyes and our 2 DS both have blue eyes, brown hair.

Whereas DSis has blue eyes, her OH has brown; of their 4 DC they have two blonde+blue eyes and two dark with brown eyes.

My mother ever one for an ill-thought generalisation, alleges you can’t trust a man with blue eyes, yet her favourite g’son is blonde with blue eyes.

They’re all lovely kids, irrespective of eye colour.

FelicisNox · 14/08/2020 17:47

Just laugh at her and say "what IS wrong with you? you're obsessed! His eyes are Hazel like ours, move on".

CauliflowerBalti · 14/08/2020 17:49

Reading this post led me to the discovery that blue is now the most common eye colour in the country, with the theory that it’s because blue eyes are the most attractive and so the blues get more action.

I have blue eyes but I think this is hogwash. I feel like my eyes are wishy washy. A strong brown beats a faded blue... ANYWAY. Your mil is v annoying and I’d be annoyed in that utterly enraging way where you can’t say anything because it’s no biggy really but if she says it one more time you’ll throw a lamp at her. Much sympathy.

SharkBrilliant · 14/08/2020 17:49

Both my DSs have blue eyes, despite me and their dad having brown eyes.

My eyes stayed blue for the longest time and my black haired, blue eyed DGF was really hopeful that someone else in the family would have blue eyes and not just him. I think it’s just a curiosity thing... I don’t think he was that invested in what colour they were really... similar to hoping there’s another left-hander in the family etc. If it’s “not the usual” or if a family member is the “only one” then people notice it/desire it.

Carpetness · 14/08/2020 17:50

I don't get the obsession with blue eyes?!? My oldest has brown as do I. Me and my sister when we were used to go round saying "brown in best!" About our eyes. My youngest has blue and lots of people do go on and on about his eyes .
My mother in law just loves to comment on how every feature ever in my children is from her/her mum/my husband. Even tho for instance none of them have brown eyes. It's really odd!! She will say "ooh he gets his brown eyes from my mum's cousin" or something like that. Umm no he gets them from me, his mum!! (Annoyingly my youngest is the SPIT of my mother in law)

MidnightCitrus · 14/08/2020 17:55

@ShinyMe

It's only because blue eyes are so rare.
Are they?
Commonwasher · 14/08/2020 17:57

My grandmother declared all her grandchildren were red-haired (as she was). None of us are, or have ever been — not even born with red hair that changes. It’s just over enthusiastic grand parents wanting a ‘mini me’ and seeing what they choose.
