5ft 7+ for Women

6ft+ for men

I'm 5ft 7 and tend to be taller than most women I know, the next shortest is 5ft 5

frustrationcentral · 06/08/2020 14:48

@Frlrlrubert

DD is 75th centile for height, with a predicted adult height of 5'6. According to the red book. She does seem tall compared to most of her peers.

I'm 5'6. I might be taller than 75% of adult women currently, but I'd say at least 50% of my year 10/11 girls are taller than me.

I think the numbers are out of date.

Anyway, I'd say 5'7 and 6'1

I agree. The red book height chart has DS2 off the scale at 5ft 5(ish) at 11. He is tall, the tallest in his school year (6) but I wouldn't have said hugely taller than his friends (3 inches or so) . I can't remember the exact number but I think the 50th centile for his age is about 4ft 10?! I can't think of anyone in his year that is that small
CorianderLord · 06/08/2020 14:54

Woman 5'7+
Man 6ft+

CorianderLord · 06/08/2020 14:58

Although at age 25 I do find that I am considered short at 5'4 among friends

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 06/08/2020 15:15

well as im 6ft(im female)and have been since i was 12 ive always been considered very very tall, ive towered over men for years
boys have also been very tall since birth

15 y old is 6ft 2
9 y old is 5ft 3
my partner/their dad is only 5ft 6

Kaiserin · 06/08/2020 15:23

For information, actual average heights in the UK:
men = 5ft9
women = 5ft3

That does match my experience for women.
I'm not tall, but at 5ft5, I am taller than most women I meet.

But I suspect younger people are taller on average.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/08/2020 15:33

I don't think the average height for women in the UK is still only 5'3. Women have got noticeably taller even in the last 20-30 years and I can see several websites now stating that the average height for a woman is more like 5'4.5 to 5'5.

I'm 5'7 and age 47. When I was a teenager/young adult, I almost never saw a woman who was taller than me and I was the second tallest girl at my school but now I see almost as many women who are taller than me than are not so I feel much more like average height, or slightly above. Not particularly tall.

IdblowJonSnow · 06/08/2020 15:37

5 ft 3 - I'm tiny!Grin

5,6 and above for a woman, 5, 11 and over for a guy.

Emeraldshamrock · 06/08/2020 15:37

5'8 onwards for a woman.
5'11 onwards for a man.

RibenaMonsoon · 06/08/2020 15:41

I'm 5ft10 and I know I'm tall for a woman. I remember in the days of yore, traipsing round the shops with my mum trying to find school trousers that were long enough for my peers not to make fun of me.

Thank goodness for all the different lengths these days, was definitely not like that in the 90s.

minnieok · 06/08/2020 15:43

5'8 for a woman 6' for a man but it depends where - at church I tower over most of the congregation and I'm not 5'7 even, they are elderly and tiny.

Trashtara · 06/08/2020 15:43

Women 5ft 8 and up (I'm 5ft 7 and consider myself average)

Men above 6ft - DH is 5ft 11 3/4 and I don't consider him tall!

unmarkedbythat · 06/08/2020 15:43

Woman- 5'8"+
Man- 6'+

I'm 5'4" and think of myself as on the short side of average. I would love to be tall.

amusedbush · 06/08/2020 15:47

5' 8 for a woman, 6' 2 for a man. My dad is bang on 6' and doesn't look that tall, but DH is 6' 3 and looks wayyyy taller than him.

I'm 5' 4.5. No worries about being too tall here Grin

amusedbush · 06/08/2020 15:50

@minnieok

5'8 for a woman 6' for a man but it depends where - at church I tower over most of the congregation and I'm not 5'7 even, they are elderly and tiny.
Speaking of elderly and tiny, both of my grannies are under 5' and my grandads were 5'7 and 5'5. No wonder we look like a family of wombles Grin

My dad is the outlier at 6' (his brother was only 5'6) and my brother hoped to inherit his height. Alas, he's 5'7 - if he stands up really straight!

NoWordForFluffy · 06/08/2020 15:50

I'm 5'11" and DH is 6'1". I consider myself to be tall, but not him. Probably 6'3" upwards for a man.

Bbang · 06/08/2020 15:51

5ft.7 and above for women, and 6ft for men.

I am 5ft.2 so most others feel tall to me.

coffeeagogo · 06/08/2020 15:53

6’ for a women and 6’4 for a man - but I work on a different scale than most as am 6’1 myself

notmyyacht · 06/08/2020 15:53

I'm 5'3 so even 5'9 (which is my husband's height) seems pretty tall to me, although I definitely wouldn't consider him tall in general.

I think for women I'd consider tall anywhere over 5'8 or 5'9 and for men over 6' or 6'1.

Also, my little sister (six years younger) is 5'11 and while she's definitely tall a lot of her (female) friends seem to be of a similar height or even taller where as most of my friends are under 5'7ish. I have no idea why that is, but I just thought it was interesting!

Crankley · 06/08/2020 15:55

I've been shrinking so now anyone over 5 ft

Seriously:

Women 5.8
Men 6' plus

GuppytheCat · 06/08/2020 15:55

DH's brother gets people who have only met them together saying 'Gosh, I'd no idea you were so tall!'

BIL is 6ft4, but he's quite a lot shorter than DH.

So, depends on context, I'd say.

gogorogo · 06/08/2020 15:58

I'm not convinced many people know their true height. I'm 5ft 9 & would class myself as tall (6ft if a man) & most people tell me "I'm 5ft 8, you must be 5ft 11. I'm not, used to do modelling.

gogorogo · 06/08/2020 16:00

The average height for an adult man across the UK is 5' 9"; for women, it's 5' 3"

nokidshere · 06/08/2020 16:10

I agree that the average height must be getting taller.

I'm 5ft 2, Dh 6ft6, DS1 6ft1, Ds2 6ft4 and still growing! My boys were always the tallest in their classes during the primary years. In secondary school they were fairly average though. DS2 was in a class of 8 for A levels and he was the shortest at 6ft1.

There are also a number of teenage girls in their friendship groups that are over 6ft.

quodvox · 06/08/2020 16:11

Depends on the country?
England I'd say 5"8 and over for a woman, 6" and over for a man.
Southern Europe I'd say 5"6 for woman and 5"9 for a man
Scandinavian countries 5"10 for a woman and 6"2 for a man, only my observations though! Height as with most things is down to individual perception.
My mother in law was tiny (physically) but wow she was 'larger than life' in personality and seemed much taller and bigger all round. She was ace!
