For both, a woman and a man...

OP posts:
Giningit · 06/08/2020 13:40

5’8 women and 6ft men. I’m 5’9 and other half is 6’3. I love me a tall man. Can’t remember the last time I’ve dated anyone shorter than 6ft. Maybe when I was a teenager.

CherryValanc · 06/08/2020 13:42

@DryIce

This is really interesting, I suppose it depends on your perspective

I'm 5'9 and my husband is 6', and I think of us both as the taller side of average.

I'd say tall is 5'10+ for a woman, and 6'2+ for a man

Definitely.

I would guess I could be put in the 'lower than the world' category when it comes to height statistics.

Giningit · 06/08/2020 13:42

@Boom45

Men don't like tall women and women don't like short men. How it's always been I'm 6ft and I was very popular thank you very much. Not so much now, the wedding ring and small children put most people off.
Wondering about this. It isn’t something I came across when I was dating. But then I only dated 6 footers Grin

Pretty sure a walk around any local town will dispel this myth for you.

Flibbitygibbit · 06/08/2020 13:44

Am 5:10. On Facebook there's a group for tall girls , some on there are 6:5 ... nightmare getting clothes and shoes !

Good job everyone has a different idea of what's tall and what's short. Makes everyone a winner.

AnEleanor · 06/08/2020 13:50

I know three men who are 6’4/6’5 and they are both noticeably taller than everyone else in the room unless they are in the room together. I saw two of them taking once and realised they were both stood up straight for the first time I’d seen! Anyway I think it’s silly to say say men are only tall if there over 6”2 as it is way over the average height in the U.K.!

Emmagen · 06/08/2020 13:50

I'm 5"8 and am normally one of the taller women in a group. So I consider myself to be quite tall.

For men I see quite tall as 6ft or above but not very tall until over about 6"4.

I know a 6"7 bloke and if you are with him you can normally hear others saying "wow, isn't he tall!" Well yes he is but finds the constant comments quite annoying!

lampshadery · 06/08/2020 13:51

Woman - 5 ft 9 and up
Man - 6ft 2 and up

Drives me up the wall when 5ft 7 women claim to be tall - if they think they're tall then what am I at 6ft? A giant?

Aceofhearts3 · 06/08/2020 13:53

Woman 5.8 men 6.2

TheOrigBrave · 06/08/2020 13:54

5'7" for a woman. I am 5'8" and people always say I'm tall. I am long of leg and slim which I think makes me look tall.

6' for a man.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/08/2020 13:55

The average heights for women and men in UK are 5'4" and 5'10" I believe. Most people are saying women over 5'9" they'd consider tall and men over 6'. So they think women are tall when they are 5" taller than average but men are tall at 2" above average. Very odd.

RoseMartha · 06/08/2020 13:55

Woman over 5ft 7
Man over 6ft

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 06/08/2020 13:56

What's interesting too (for me) is that I'm almost 5'10" and a woman but most people don't think I'm tall til I actively start measuring myself against them.

I'm 5 ft 7 and don't consider myself tall just taller than average of my age group. I'm definitely a shorty compared to my DD's friends.
lampshadery · 06/08/2020 14:00

@PickwickThePlockingDodo I definitely think there is a difference between 'taller than average' and actually 'tall'.

It is very interesting that you say your DD's friends all seem tall - my mum is tall (taller than me) and says that tallness is much more common in my generation than hers. Women seem to be getting taller - I'm sure there is some scientific research on this somewhere

northernstars · 06/08/2020 14:04

My husband and I are 6ft so I'd say anything taller than that is tall. It's all relative. Agree about today's teenagers - I was a bit of a freak in school in the 80s for being so tall but now I seem to see tall teenagers everywhere.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 06/08/2020 14:08

Over 5'4 for a woman 5'11 for a man

habibihabibi · 06/08/2020 14:13

I think it depends on your origins and age. Lots of barely at high school girls are over 6ft in my cousins kids school in Australia.
The basketball team has a 14 yr old girl that in 6'2.
Women 6ft Men 6ft 4

kerfuffling · 06/08/2020 14:29

Dunno - why are you asking?

Cactusmum · 06/08/2020 14:34

over 5' 8 for women and over 6'1 for men i guess.. im 5'10 and i feel taller than most in the room a lot. Lots of guys around my height and shorter most of the time so i dont see it as tall till they are a couple inches taller than me.

Nitw1t · 06/08/2020 14:36

I'm 5'8" and taller than most women I know (say 80%?). In a crowded room, I'm normally taller than a couple of men too (including DH Grin ).
So I'd say for a woman 5'8"-5'9" - tall enough to be taller than a fair few guys.

Men: over 6'1" (tall enough that I'd still have to look up in heels)

Mary46 · 06/08/2020 14:37

We all tall I am 5 11. I wear flats alot! My dad was tall 6 ft 2!

TheSunIsStillShining · 06/08/2020 14:40

I'm 160 cm, so almost everyone is always taller. Husband is 170 cm, which I think is on the short side of average and son (15) is already almost 180cm. At least he will have an easy time shopping for clothes as that seems to be the heights shops cater to mostly. :)

Mumoblue · 06/08/2020 14:41

Anything over 5ft 7 for a woman (I'm 5'6)

Anything at or over 6ft for a man.

In my friend circle I'm one of the tallest, I think my best friend is 5'2. But in my family I'm considered short, because they're all a bunch of giants. I was very put out that I'm not 6ft like my mum and sister.
