To think the monarchy will end with the death of Queen Elizabeth 2

As an Aussie am curious to know if British monarchy can really prevail beyond life of Queen.

Recently there has been the biography of Megxit and details, intricate, of the fall out between the two Princes and their wives.

Added to this there is the Prince Andrew saga.

With all that is happening in world, will it really continue ?

I can’t imagine a Prince Charles.

I genuinely wonder why the British bother with it all.

Can’t imagine a Prince Charles as King.

Plus I really feel for the women of the royal family.

It seems no lessons have been learned since Princess Di

The pressures are enormous. That both Duchesses are under scrutiny, and putting out fires while raising children seems untenable.

I think you mean King Charles 😂 we already have a PC sadly...

But YANBU. The Monarchy is beyond a joke in every respect, the only appeal was its mystique and that has died a prolonged death over the last 30 years or so. They become more TOWIE-esque every day.

I think once QE passes away, we should become a Republic and respectfully and tastefully uphold the palaces etc as tourist attractions. Maybe we will make back the cash we forked out for Frogmore, who knows.

pussycatinboots · 27/07/2020 17:47

The alternative would be a currency with Boris on it.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/07/2020 17:47

I don't think it will necessarily end, but I think public perception will change dramatically. There are already loads of people who think the monarchy should be abolished, and I think those numbers will increase tremendously once the Queen dies.

KeepingPlain · 27/07/2020 17:48

The alternative would be a currency with Boris on it.

Oh dear god no.

Devlesko · 27/07/2020 17:48

Do you think the monarchy will be overthrown then? Revolution? otherwise why wouldn't they continue?
I'm no royalist but I'm sure they have been through much more than this throughout the long life of the many monarchs we have had.

Sparklesocks · 27/07/2020 17:49

I’m not arsed about the the royal family personally but many are very much into them and the tradition so no I don’t think you’re right.

MsVestibule · 27/07/2020 17:49

The monarchy had been through a LOT worse than this and has survived. The 1990s was a terrible time for them and they made it through the other side. Prince Charles has regained a lot of his popularity, Prince William and Kate seem to be happy together. Who knows what's going to happen to Harry and Meghan, but they'll be very unimportant in a few years time.

And then William and Kate's children will be of an age where we'll all be showing an interest at what they're up to, and so the cycle continues....

Anyway, that's my prediction.

Ditto. Definitely don’t want Charles as king, never mind Camilla as queen! I could just about cope if Charles refused and gave the crown straight to William. There’s still a lot of love for William because of his mum, and Kate is well liked too. But if William’s family died then that would be it - no way would I want Harry and Me-Me-Meghan on the throne.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/07/2020 17:51

I think it will keep going. I don’t think there will be much appetite for change in the U.K. in general and William and Kate seem to be reasonably popular.
The Harry and Meghan thing has added to the glamour and a soap opera seems to be what many people want from the royals. Harry and Meghan aren’t integral to the succession so it doesn’t really matter whether they have an official role or not.

(I wouldn’t have a monarchy personally but the institution seems to me to have plenty of support.)

Dinocan · 27/07/2020 17:51

I think it will certainly be the beginning of the end of the monarchy as we know it. At least I hope it will.

Alsohuman · 27/07/2020 17:53

Completely agree @MsVestibule. There’s massive support for the monarchy across every age group. By the time the Queen dies we’ll be up to our necks in the effects of Covid and Brexit and in dire need of a coronation to cheer us up.

The Sussexes are a complete irrelevance, they’ve resigned from the RF.

I also cannot picture a King Charles. I think it would be ridiculous tbh, he is not a King.

I have thought for a long time that if he has any sense, for the sake of the whole monarchy, he should refuse the throne when the time comes and pass the title graciously onto William. But I doubt he will do that. Ego, probably.

heartsonacake · 27/07/2020 17:56

YABU. Of course it will continue.

minipie · 27/07/2020 17:56

We dont have kangaroos

🤣 brilliant

OP, I don’t think it will end then but I think it should. Unfortunately I expect it will limp on for a few more generations.

minipie · 27/07/2020 17:57

for the sake of the whole monarchy, he should refuse the throne when the time comes and pass the title graciously onto William

Picking and choosing would defeat the whole (stupid) basis of the monarchy. It has to be done on succession, not merit or popularity, or it isn’t monarchy any more.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 27/07/2020 17:58

I always find the ‘when the Queen does’ thing a bit ridiculous. How many millions does the monarchy cost a year? How many millions in tourist revenue are (rightly or wrongly) attributed to its existence? Do people really think that a decision as dramatic as the abolition of the monarchy, for both the UK and the wider commonwealth, can really come down to ‘Awwh, we like the queen, and she’s only got a few more years, bless her... let’s stick with it until she karks it, and then once the funeral sandwiches have gone dry at the corners we can kick the relatives out and flog Buck House to a property developer’?

If Britain is going to become a republic, it will a) take years of planning and discussion and b) will not be dependent on how long one person lives.

Sparklesocks · 27/07/2020 17:58

I also cannot picture a King Charles.

Here I can help Grin

To think the monarchy will end with the death of Queen Elizabeth 2
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 27/07/2020 17:59

I avtually think he will make some changes when he takes the throne. He is the one who advocates a slimmed down monarchy, and the one who wants to open palaces to the public to reduce the govt spending on the Crown.

He is already a keen advocate of environmental issues and has been since the start, so that will come to the forefront.

I don't doubt that this will be the start of a new way....possibly with the end of the monarchy as it is now as an end point eventually. But end with QE2? No. I don't think it will.

Wolfgirrl · 27/07/2020 17:59

I think it will take a strong republican PM with a moral objection to end it. Kier Starmer..? 🤞

HappyHammy · 27/07/2020 17:59

When she dies there will be a huge outpouring and ceremony, PC will be King and so it goes on.
